This is one smooth ride. A 2006 Collings D2H BbA that’s in excellent condition, silky setup, sweet trebles paired with excellent clarity and note separation across the registers, flawless fit and finish—honestly, what more could you want? To boot, this D2H has gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, an Adirondack Spruce top, Waverly tuners, and a soft V neck that’s easy on the hands. We can’t stress enough how clean and crisp the voice is, how smoothly this Collings projects without boominess. It’s an incredible Dreadnought.

If it’s good enough for Tim Stafford, you bet it’s good enough for us. Tim commissioned this Dreadnought from Wayne Henderson with a set of Madagascar Rosewood he acquired from LMI and held onto for 10 years before Wayne was able to craft it into this exquisite piece. Red Spruce on top, rounded V neck, and MOP diamond fretboard inlays complete the image. Stafford used this Henderson for several Blue Highway shows and for at least one record. To further boost the provenance, this is the first Madagascar Rosewood guitar that Wayne ever built! We’ve seen a lot of Hendersons over the years, and this one definitely stands apart.

Livewire! We just took in a pair of Petros guitars that complement each other to a T: matching woods, but one comes in steel and the other in nylon. This here is the 2006 steel string FS Cutaway, in Pau Ferro Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. The slightly wider neck is an absolute breeze to play, especially if you’re a fingerstylist who likes a roomy fretboard. 12 frets to the body, combined with a Venetian Cutaway, gives the tone added warmth and color in the mids without compromising the player’s access to those upper frets. An excellent candidate for altered tunings! We loved DADGAD and C# especially. And gorgeous Amboyna Burl appointments (and bridge!) to round out the package in elegance.

We just took in a pair of Petros guitars that complement each other to a T: matching woods, but one comes in steel and the other in nylon. This here is the nylon crossover twin with Pau Ferro (Bolivian Rosewood) back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top. Love the tone of nylon strings, but prefer the playability and creature comforts of a steel string guitar? This Petros Crossover is perfect. Radiused fretboard, slim nut, Venetian Cutaway—Amboyna burl appointments to boot, and an Alaskan Yellow Cedar neck.

Bob Taylor’s tribute to the birth of the nation: Taylor Guitars limited run of the Liberty Tree. The Tulip Poplar back and sides came from the last Liberty Tree in Annapolis, Maryland, and the Sitka Spruce top is adorned with a post-Revolutionary War flag (the headstock features the pre-Revolutionary War’s flag). The scrolled Declaration of Independence floats across the fretboard extension and completes the picture of a patriot’s guitar: our 2002 Taylor LTG Liberty Tree, number 36.

The folks at Preston Thompson Guitars outdo themselves every. single. time. We just receive this latest Shipwreck Brazilian 000, and already we’re head over heels for it. Gorgeous BRW paired with Adirondack Spruce and 41-style Abalone “Mystic” Snowflakes along the fretboard and PTG’s original Regency Torch headstock inlay. This 000-14SBA is suited up with a 24.9 scale for warmth and easy playability, and the neck itself is finished in satin that’s gossamer to the touch. Brazilian Rosewood bindings throughout, tortoise-style pickguard, and Waverly Relic tuners round out the image of elegance. The Adirondack top is braced according to Preston’s advanced X, pre-war scalloped pattern, and as a result there’s plenty of power and headroom when you lean in, and clarity and presence under a softer attack. From top to bottom, a stroke of perfect.

This 1995 Olson SJ continues in the tradition of all of Jim Olson’s guitars, which is to say that this Olson is a fingerstyle fanatics favorite (or soon to be) weapon of choice. The string-to-string balance is superb, and the play feel is gossamer. Dropped into lowered tunings, the strings remain crisp and responsive; let those bass strings rumble when you can, because the lower depths have an awesome dark growl to fill out your arrangements. Freshly brought back to peak playing condition by our very own repair team, this Olson has spot-on intonation and is ready to roll for many more years to come!
The clarity and easy projection typical to Olson guitars is represented in full force here: it doesn’t take much for this SJ to sing. The Indian Rosewood back and sides, paired with a Cedar top, impart a bright and articulate voice that really comes out in the trebles with bell-like overtones. Completed by an Olson-labelled Calton case, this guitar is ready for any and all hijinks your fingerstyling can come up with.

Bill Tippin is one of our desert island builders, and this 2009 Crescendo is one of our desert island guitars. Simply gorgeous woods: bookmatched Cocobolo with sapwood, Sinker Redwood on top set off with Maple purflings and rosette. The strings respond sweetly to even a delicate attack, and we can’t praise the tone enough, from the string-to-string balance to the dynamic response and colorful bass. Waverly tuners keep the neck weight low, and Bill’s contoured Venetian Cutaway allows for easy upper fret access—a register where this Crescendo excels, unlike so many other steel string guitars. Additionally, there’s a K&K Pure Mini pickup installed (one of our personal favorites), and the whole package comes wrapped up in a Cedar Creek tweed hardshell case.

According to our sources, Wayne’s only built a small handful of Hondo guitars, so we’re extra delighted to have found one ourselves. The voice is big and bold, with powerful response and fat trebles. We love the energy, for both fingers and flatpicks. Waverly tuners and 28-style appointments, rounded out with a custom tortoise-style pickguard and a soft V neck.

An incredible find. This 2012 Stephen Connor Classical comes from no less a master than Odair Assad of the Assad brothers. Indian Rosewood back and sides with a Maple backstrip, Moonspruce top, and Stephen’s elevated fingerboard and sound portal come together for an exquisitely powerful and dynamic tone. The headstock has been upgraded with Rodgers tuners, and Stephen’s lattice-braced Moonspruce top features gorgeous bearclaw figure to boot. This Connor has been lovingly played in the past few years, and has the well-earned marks to prove it. In our eyes, this only reinforces the value of the instrument: it’s been played in to open up handsomely, and with an easy setup under your hands. A true concert guitar.
