2013 Douglas Pringle Classical, Indian Rosewood/European Spruce
Handmade in Tampa, Florida by Douglas Pringle, this 2013 Concert Classical is a study in clarity, sustain, and playability. Indian Rosewood back and sides are here paired with a European Spruce top, 650mm scale, and French Polish finish for maximum resonance. The neck profile is a touch on the slim side, keeping playability easy peasy. Douglas braced the Euro Spruce top with a lightweight lattice that accentuates projection and power in the voice. Gotoh tuners on top, hardshell Humicase for protection between sessions, and a svelte punching weight of 3lbs 11oz keep this Pringle ringing out longer in your hands without tiring.

Each year for the Winter NAMM convention, Dana Bourgeois and his team pull out all the stops for a limited run of NAMM instruments. In 2015, that came in the form of this exclusive OM-150 Deep Body with premium Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce. Dana’s take on traditional snowflake MOP inlays decorate the fretboard and bridge wings, and the body features their deep sides variation for added bass response and power. Ivoroid bindings throughout, gold Waverly tuners, Fossil Ivory pins—this Bourgeois is a beauty. Further, this one has been well cared for and is in pristine shape for its next owner. You?

If we could play Kim Walker guitars all day, trust us, we would. Kim’s instruments are what we like to call Universal Favorites: there’s enough of a vintage air to appease the staunchest Martin-phile, more than enough clarity and control to make the fingerstylist drool, and a rich resonance and sonority for the guitarist who craves the modern flavor you find from the finest luthiers active today like Ervin Somogyi and Jeff Traugott. Case in point: our 2009 Walker OM in Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce.
Kim’s Mahogany guitars don’t sound like Mahogany guitars. Or rather, they do have the woody crunch and attack of a Mahogany instrument, but somehow Kim fuses that flavor with a bit of the Rosewood propensity for overtones and dark bass. The result is a voice simultaneously sonorous and punchy. Check out the demo for a hint of what we mean by that. The aesthetic is understated, so the natural beauty of Mahogany and Adirondack are on high display here. These unassuming appointments give this Walker OM the character of the quiet kid in the corner whose got the voice of an angel. All you have to do is put pick or fingertip to string, and this OM will sing the pants of a trouser salesman.
Walker has once again closed his waiting list (just too many on the books already!), so this is a rare opportunity for you to snag one of Kim’s maestro works without the ten year waiting list—if it ever opens up again! Lutherie beauty like this won’t linger for long.
This particular Walker OM was used on our own Al Petteway’s recent recording, The Collector’s Passion, track five, “Thumbing It.” Here’s a link to the album: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/guitar-accessories/music-cds-and-tabulature/the-collector-s-passion-by-al-petteway-download-mp3.html

Clean, consistent, and crisp. This 2015 OM-R from Joel Michaud is a fantabulous instrument in Pernambuco and Moonspruce that’s finely honed for fingerstyle play. The body features a dramatic arm bevel and wedge for creature comfort, and a Florentine Cutaway for upper fret access. We love how easily this Michaud plays, and the trebles absolutely sing. Notes have an even response that doesn’t fade, meaning that your compositions ring out with sweet definition and hang in the air. Alessi tuners are elegant and smooth operators, and the whole package comes wrapped up in a custom Ameritage case for good-looking protection.

Simon Fay’s Model One is easy on the eyes, easy on the hands, easy on the ears. This multiscale beauty comes to us from 2015 in impeccable shape, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and German Spruce top. 25.5” on the bass to 25” on the treble, the fanned fretboard is a great candidate for standard pitch and more exotic tunings without confusing the left hand. Gold EVO frets insure longevity between fret jobs, and the slim neck profile is oh so smooth in hand. Bass response offers a sweet blooming effect after the initial attack, which lends itself well to DADGAD. This Simon Fay Model One is a prime example of the contemporary fingerstyle guitar: agile, responsive, and dynamic.

Incredibly rare, we’ve landed one of the 30 guitars Linda Manzer built in collaboration with Pat Metheny for their Signature 6 Limited Edition run. This beauty is like new, features Indian Rosewood back and sides and a German Spruce top, and the ergonomic features Metheny uses on his own Manzers. There’s the namesake Manzer Wedge and Venetian Cutaway, and added to that we have a groove carved into the heel, coupled with a thumb rest on the bass side, to coax the player’s left hand just a smidge closer to those uppermost frets.
The inlays across the headstock and fretboard are matched with the orange Calton flight case, and each of these 30 guitars is inlaid in a pattern unique to this run. The inlays were executed in conjunction with master inlay artist Mark Kett. Further, Linda used Copper for the side dots, and inlaid a Diamond at the 7th fret dot to boot. Linda also collaborated with Tony Duggan-Smith for the final setup and fretwork on each. This is number 13 of only 30, and we really can’t say when next we’ll see one of these guitars come up on the used market. Here’s a link to Manzer’s page where she describes the process: https://www.manzer.com/limited/

For something off the menu, please ask for the Manzer Dehlicaster when you call in. This 2014 Manzer is really in a category all of its own, with Indian Rosewood back and sides and German Spruce top. The bridge is modeled after a sitar’s such that each string has individual saddles which are shimmed to the optimal height to provide the classic sitar warble and hum when you pluck the string. The neck on this one is wide and fat, giving the player lots of left hand room for whatever tunes you want to pluck. Additionally, this Manzer has been outfitted with a Schertler Magnetico AG6 soundhole pickup and S-Mic-M combo—and brother, it sounds so sweet plugged in!

Exquisite. One look at this Nightingale 12-string from Kevin Ryan, and you understand what all the fuss is about. We love Kevin’s guitars for their flawless fit and finish, modern aesthetics, and surgically precise tone, and this 12-string brings all of that to the table with the added presence and dynamism of doubled strings. You can bang out cowboy chords, sure, but any regular 12-string can handle that. Where this Ryan 12-string excels is in the definition of each individual note, from string to string and across the registers. This is an incredible fingerstyle guitar, and Kevin’s patent effortless playability really makes this one shine. This beauty was built in 2008 with Kevin’s finest woods (the Brazilian Rosewood is primo grade, and would today only be used on Kevin’s Signature models). Brazilian and Moonspruce, a perfect combination. Additionally, this Nightingale features Kevin’s namesake arm bevel and acoustic flutes, plus a custom fit Calton flight case for travel.

Big voice! Comfortable body. We love this 2018 Kostal OM. Not only does it feature some seriously gorgeous woods (Figured Koa back and sides, German Spruce top) and Jason’s two-tone headstock, it also packs a fierce wallop with even a light touch. Crisp, clean balance from string to string, with a particularly lively bass response. The Koa lends an evenness to note definition that’s really sweet: big chords ring out in articulate, technicolor glory. The setup is slinky and smooth just the way we like it for standard, DADGAD, and beyond. It even holds up well under a pick. This is the kind of guitar you just don’t want to put down—precisely what we’ve come to expect from Jason Kostal.

A special piece, this one. We’ve got a 1982 Gibson/D’Angelico, #2166S. This archtop was commissioned by Gordon Poland, and built by Gibson’s master luthier Aaron Cowles out of his own home, one of only two D’Angelico replicas Cowles built. Here, the guitar was built from various specifications and dimensions of Johnny Smith’s original 1955 D’Angelico Excel 1000—and Cowles had direct access to this very instrument for this purpose.
Cowles acquired a tailpiece in the D’Angelico style from the original company John used, you’ll find a D’Angelico stamp on the inside of the instrument and “IHJD” inlaid on the back of the headstock, “In Honor of John D’Angelico.”Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, jazz guitar, dangelico, d’angelico guitar, d’angelica, johny smith, new york

You can play this Sexauer softly and get a lot of warm, articulate bass, or you can dig in and explore the headroom at higher volume. The setup is easy on the hands, with a 13-fret neck join and 25.4” scale. Schertler tuners in a slotted headstock, a light and responsive Oil Varnish finish, Amazon Rosewood bindings—and then there’s the Redwood Burl rosette & endgraft to ponder.
