2015 Bourgeois Custom DB Signature OM, Figured Koa/Croatian Spruce
Well, well, well. We’ve got a handsome prize on our hands here: a 2015 DB Signature from Bourgeois Guitars that’s got gorgeous tonewoods, hide glue construction, and a flawless fit-n-finish. Light-colored Koa back and sides are paired with a Croatian Spruce top (boasting the results of Dana’s Aged Tone torrefication process), Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons, and Fossilized Mammoth Ivory squares and diamonds inlaid along the fretboard. This Bourgeois doesn’t need much encouragement to really project, and it doesn’t top out easily to boot. We love this one with a flatpick almost as much as we do for fingerpicking; it lives up to the jack-of-all-trades reputation of the OM body.

Gorgeous to a fault, with crisp trebles and a well-tempered midrange for even response and sweet, sweet clarity. This 2015 D-150 from Bourgeois and co is a fabulous Bluegrass machine. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (check out that extravagant figure), Adirondack Spruce on top and hide glue construction throughout. Ivoroid bindings, Waverly tuners, and a soft V neck with silky setup for effortless playability. This Bourgeois has been well cared for, and has hardly a mark on it.

A fun one that’s opened up handsomely! We’ve landed a 2008 Bourgeois Vintage D that’s got some real horsepower under the hood. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Adirondack Spruce on top, and a voice that’s been broken in over the past 11 years and is singing oh so proudly. We really dig the dynamic range here: playing softly there is a sweetness; played with gusto and the projection swells and fills the space. There’s a breathiness to the voice that only comes once a guitar has been played in for a period of time, and this Vintage D has that for sure. Waverly tuners, Ivoroid bindings, and 28-style diamond inlays round out the package on this powerhouse Bourgeois Dreadnought.

A custom piece from Dana Bourgeois’s fine team! This SJ Custom is a charmer in Madagascar Rosewood and Redwood from 2011, with 14 frets to the neck, Waverly tuners (plus Snakewood buttons), and hide glue construction throughout. The voice is characterized by an even response from bass to treble, with an added touch of warm sustain to the trebles. Definitely a fingerpicker’s guitar, with 14 frets to the body and a short 25 inch scale this Bourgeois plays oh so easily, and we found it took to Open D and Open G as easy as breathing.

Jaw droopingly beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are here paired with a shaded Appalachian Spruce top in herringbone trim. Soft V neck, great setup, and weighing in at a trim 4lbs 3oz, this Henderson is an effortless player, and has a sweet midrange to tie the bass and trebles together.

This Martin Custom Shop 000 has something to say. Striking Ziricote back and sides pair sweetly with an Alpine Italian Spruce top for crisp trebles and a well-tempered midrange and bass response; the recipe for a top notch fingerstyle guitar. The 000’s short 24.9” scale, here on a 14-fret frame, gives a touch more sweetness and roundness to the trebles. The Spruce top is trimmed out in Abalone with a 45-style rosette to boot, and at the headstock the Custom Shop installed a gorgeous alternate torch in Abalone, nestled between gold Schaller GrandTune tuners. Pyramid bridge in Ebony, and pale Maple bindings round out the image of this 2019 Martin Custom Shop 000 as a beautiful instrument for both the eyes and the ears.

Wickedly opened up and responsive as a firecracker, this 2000 GC-1 Deluxe from Gerald Sheppard is a hot player at a competitive price. We haven’t heard a Cedar-topped guitar this loud in some time, and the voice still retains the warmth and dynamism typical for Cedar, making this a deadly combination of projection and richness.
Featuring Indian Rosewood for the back and sides and bound in Curly Maple, this Sheppard is easy on the eyes and a blessing to your touch–the play feel is decidedly intimate and comfortable, and the Grand Concert responds well to even a delicate attack. The trebles in particular are chock full of sweet overtones, especially around the fifth and seventh frets, that help fill out the voice. Gone over by our repair staff, this Sheppard is in tip-top playing shape!

This latest OM from Don Musser is something extraordinary. Explosively figured The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, with nitro finish throughout and pearl across the body and headstock with surprisingly three-dimensional properties. Striking Rosewood bridge, headstock veneer, and fingerboard set off the Maple bindings, and Don’s medium thickness C neck is easy peasy for left hand work. The scale length is 25.5”, just a touch longer than Martin long scale for a snappier response, and that pairs well with the crisp tones generated by The Tree Mahogany here, and the warm, smooth trebles courtesy of Engelmann Spruce.

A guitar for every occasion. This 2011 RGC6 from Del Langejans is a robustly dynamic instrument that performs equally well for fingerpicking as for strumming, amplified with an L.R. Baggs Anthem system or acoustically. Rosewood neck pairs with an Indian Rosewood body and Port Orford Cedar top, plus pale Maple bindings to round it all out. Zero fret, gold Gotoh tuners, and a Venetian Cutaway to boot! This beauty comes wrapped up in a well-fitted Cedar Creek case, and it’s raring to go.

Superstar John Mayer, working with Martin Guitars, makes for a unique instrument. And that’s an understatement. With this limited run of 25 00-45SC Stagecoach Editions in 2011, Mayer and Martin paired brick-red Cocobolo Rosewood back and side sets with Adirondack Spruce tops in a 12-fret 00 package, and trimmed everything out with select Blue Paua Abalone. Pay attention to the rings of the rosette—you’ll see they continue across the fretboard extension as well. Down the center of the headstock is a 1902 alternate torch in Abalone. Waverly tuners flank the torch on either side in squared slots.

From inlay phenom and luthier maestro Harvey Leach, we’ve got a gorgeous Cremona model from 2002 decked out with sweet woods and a sprawling series of tiger inlays. Flamed Koa back and sides pair with a Flamed Millennium Redwood top for a unique combination of dry, punchy trebles and a warm midrange. Starting at the headstock, continuing along the fretboard, and finally terminating at the end graft are four tiger inlays—the stripes of which set off the wavy figure of the Redwood top to a T. Abalone trim along the top bindings, gold Grover tuners, and a slim, just over four pounds playing weight complete the package.

There are few greater pleasures around the shop than getting in a Kevin Ryan guitar. Without doubt or question we know that we will be getting a spectacular instrument in everytime. Such is the case with this 2003 Nightingale. Built from the legendary combination of German Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood, this Nightingale has a rich tonal palette, with soaring trebles and low down basses, it is like having an orchestra sitting on your lap. Playing it soft and smooth, one is reminded of the sweet string section, play a single note lead and the horn section comes to mind, dig in and the full ensemble comes rushing out of the soundhole. This is a once in a lifetime guitar, don’t miss it.

George Lowden’s team knocked it out the park with this 2014 F50C. Notes have juicy, round definition with lots of color, and we love the balance between the bass and treble registers in particular. Gorgeously dark African Blackwood back and sides paired with a Redwood top for sweet overtones and an enveloping quality that’s perfect for fingerstyle. Lowden’s F body strikes a balance between their largest O body size and the more intimate proportions of their S size. The scale length is 25.6 inches, adding a touch of extra tension to the strings for added pop, and this F50C features the GL Standard neck carve. No pickup installed, so it’s ready for whatever amplification system you need for on stage work—and in the meantime it handles handsomely as a recording guitar.
