Brand New Sexauer OM, Brazilian Rosewood/Polish Euro Spruce
Our latest and greatest from Bruce Sexauer is a fabulous fingerstyle guitar equally at home for strumming, lead work, open tunings, and more. Bruce builds his instruments to be as dynamic and responsive as possible, and this brand new OM does. not. disappoint. We love the clarity from string to string and fret to fret; surgically well balanced. Flawless playability makes it easy to lose track of time with this Sexauer in your hands, and weighing in just under four pounds no worries about getting tired. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are paired with a Polish Spruce top, Oil Varnish finish, and Amazon Rosewood bindings to boot. Honduran Mahogany neck, hide glue construction throughout, and Schaller Grand Tune tuners are icing on the cake. Comes wrapped up in a Visesnut adjustable flight case for a custom fit.

A piece quite unlike anything we’ve seen from Jim Olson: a Brazilian Rosewood neck SJ Cutaway with extensive and exquisite Abalone inlays from tuners to tail. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with Cedar make for Jim and James Taylor’s hallmark sound, and we have an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup installed to carry that tone straight from the studio to the stage.
This 2011 Olson is one of the most impressive guitars we’ve ever seen come out of Jim’s shop, and it’s not just the woods (although woah, these woods are absurdly beautiful, and we’ve only ever seen a Brazilian Rosewood neck once before, on the McConnell Jordan built for Paul)—the voice is crisp to a “C,” with flawless intonation along the fretboard and balanced from bass to treble. A perfect fingerstyle guitar with family heirloom appointments.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, james olson, BRW, brazilian neck, calton, bespoke, one of a kind

A Classical guitar for the modern-minded player: our 2008 Andrew White Classical. Spruce over Brazilian Rosewood, with a slim nut (1 7/8”) and radiused fretboard, this Andrew White plays handsomely and effortlessly, and the previous owner installed an L.R. Baggs pickup with volume and tone control knobs recessed beneath the lip of the soundhole. An oval soundport in the upper bout keeps you in touch with your tone, and the weight comes in at a trim four pounds, four ounces. This Classical comes to us from 2008, and is one of Andrew’s handbuilt guitars, not production line Andrew White Guitars. Andrew keeps quality, fit and finish, and tone at the forefront with his personal builds, and this Classical is no exception.

Our 2003 Sheppard is lively, opened up, and raring to go. Gerald decked this beau out with his cream of the crop, Ave Maria appointment package over an Indian Rosewood and Cedar body with Mahogany neck and Fossilized Mammoth nut/saddle. Long scale fretboard, 1.75” nut, and an easy playability that lends itself equally well to flatpicks as fingertips. We love how the trebles really leap out of the soundhole; overall, this Sheppard has opened up handsomely and packs a punch. Gerald’s Grand Auditorium proportions lend a boost to the bass and the projection without making the guitar too big: this one’s easy from tuners to tailblock.

The folks at Martin Guitars have brought another historic gem back to new life with a limited run of recreated Martins from the turn of the twentieth century. This is their 00-45S 1902 model, built in 2003 to match exactly the specs of one of four 45-style prototypes built in 1902 (the 45 didn’t come onto the scene until 1904).
Here we have the hallmarks of modern 45-style appointments, but in addition the original prototype featured an integrated pickguard between the bridge and soundhole in the style of Martin mandolin pickguards of the time. All this over Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce.
This beauty is number five of an exclusive 100. Exquisitely lively, this 00-45S has a quick response and surprising depths to the bass and middle registers. This one comes with the original coffin hardshell case, and we have a Martin TKL case as well that can be shipped separately at additional cost.

Guitars like this are what get us out of bed in the morning. Bill Tippin is a dyed-in-the-wool master, the same goes for Al Petteway, and when the two get together the result is nothing short of inspirational. This is a 2009 Al Petteway Signature Crescendo with impeccable Brazilian Rosewood & Moonspruce—wood of this calibre is exceedingly rare, and it’s a blessing Bill got a hold of it in the first place. Brazilian Rosewood trim throughout, an arm bevel and beveled Venetian Cutaway/heel joint, and Bill outdid himself with custom Mexican Fire Opal inlays at the nut, and on both ends of the backstrip. You’ll find a soundport in the upper bout, and a custom Hoffee flight case to keep everything safe and sound.

John Buscarino’s catalog includes everything from nylon string crossovers to straight ahead flattops, archtops, and the experimental space in between. This 2011 Rhapsody model features flattop bracing on its Adirondack Spruce top, but John carved the Plum Pudding Mahogany back in the style of an archtop guitar. The result is a voice that combines warmth with punch—an excellent flatpicking machine that can cover a lot of territory. John added a fleur-de-lis soundport to the upper bout to keep the player in tune with their tunes, and a K&K Pure Mini pickup for onstage work.

Here’s an Olson that stands apart from the crowd: an Olson Dreadnought from all the way back in 1984. Indian Rosewood and Spruce, Jim’s hallmark 5-ply neck, and the same easy playability you’ll find on his more common SJs. The voice is very even and balanced across the registers, and loved it when we dug in for a more aggressive response. Being nearly four decades old, this Olson has its fair share of play wear and finish checks, but we’ve gone over it toe to tip to make sure everything is ready to roll—this one’s got a clean bill of health. Additionally, there’s a Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup installed that’s killer; ready for the stage today, the recording studio tomorrow.

An exciting new piece has just fallen into our lap. Enter: Max Spohn, German luthier with a fresh aesthetic and voice. Paul met Max at the 2019 Vancouver International Guitar Festival, and was immediately struck by the curvaceous OM here with its baby blue appointments (and matching Calton case!). Max crafted this guitar as an homage to Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. The back and sides are Pau Ferro/Bolivian Rosewood, and Max picked out a creamy-white set of Swiss Moonspruce for the top, and opted to adorn his headstock with a matching Spruce veneer—something we don’t know if we’ve ever seen before. Scheller tuners, a micro arm bevel on the lower bout, and if you look closely you’ll find the heel curves in on itself as it meets the body of the instrument. The voice is lively and agile, with a clean treble response and sustain. The short 25” scale fretboard adds a touch of warmth to the mids that really comes out when we dropped the strings down into DADGAD and beyond. This is the very first Spohn OM we’ve had in the shop, and it’s causing quite a stir among the Tippins and the Ryans and the Wingerts.

A Bill Wise masterpiece. 2009 Charis SJ in Amazon Rosewood and Cedar, 5-ply Mahogany neck, Wenge arm and rib bevels for added player comfort, 25.5” scale for crisp, powerful response—the list goes on. This is a fabulous fingerstyle instrument, and with the addition of a Florentine Cutaway and a soundport in the upper bout keeps you in tune with your tunes. Bill’s guitars are famously easy to play, a nod to Jim Olson’s builds with a slim neck carve and SJ body dimensions, and this 2009 SJ is no exception. Silky smooth and quick. Gotoh Delta tuners, Calton flight case, and custom diamond fretboard inlays round it all out.

Laurie Williams made his claim to fame several years ago when he discovered his legendary “Whitebait” Kauri log, which he then converted into billets for instrument making, but that’s not the only local wood (exotic for us) that Williams employs in his powerful stringed instruments. In addition to Kauri, with its warmth and great projection (like the difference between Cedar and Redwood, but amplified), he chose to construct the back and sides on this 2005 Kiwi with Taraire, a New Zealand species similar to the Rosewood family with its rich, balanced tone and workability. Under Williams’ painstaking care, these woods have been transformed into an instrument with amazing action and response, which is deeply resonant in lowered tunings like DADGAD, and has trebles with a clear, focused tone. Fingerstylists will love the easy playability of the OM-size body and the 12-fret neck and 24.9 inch scale, allowing arrangements to ring flawlesssly smooth. Safe in its Ameritage hardshell case, the Kiwi is ready to go anywhere with its rich, resonant voice.

Add to CompareBrand New Galloup G.4, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
We’re exceedingly fortunate to be able to work with some of the greatest luthiers alive today, among them Bryan Galloup. We just took in this brand new G.4 from Bryan after the 2019 Swannanoa Gathering Guitar Week, and frankly we feel hard pressed to let this one go. Brick-red Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are paired with a German Spruce top and 12-fret neck in a smaller package that lends extra sweetness to the trebles. This Galloup is an excellent fingestyle instrument, and plays as easily as breathing. The bass register is equal parts warmth and definition, which really rounds out the overall voice. Bryan stepped up his game by stepping the wings of the bridge (see photos for a closeup!) and inlaying the back with long geometric patterns, as well as around the soundhole. This work of functional art comes wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case.

We’re lucky to be able to follow along with Michi Matsuda during the wild rides that make up his custom guitars. We recently commissioned this hybrid of Michi’s Deconstruction guitars for one of our longtime clients, and it’s been a blast watching this piece of art come together for the past several months on our blog (see here: https://www.dreamguitars.com/michihiro-matsudas-mad-scientist-experiment/). Michi had the reins right from the start, and we’d like to include his artist’s statement here to explain just what’s going on here:
“It is going to be a one-of-a-kind acoustic/electric, something in between my archtop guitar I made in 2017 and my deconstruction guitars. It will also be a sculptural piece of art. The top is hand-carved Sitka Spruce. The body is partial sides, and partial hand-carved back. I will use figured Maple for that. The basic tonal idea is the same as my deconstruction, so there is no sound box. I will use figured, tempered Maple for neck, and Mahogany with some Rosewood for main structure of the body. I will use two humbuckers. Controls will be simple: one volume, one tone, and one pickup switch. I am also going to design a new style of bridge.
It will not be an archtop guitar, not a solid-body, not a hollow-body electric.”
The result is 100% Matsuda. With some components lightly sunburst, others exposed, from Sitka Spruce to Maple and Wenge, and with a tailpiece, bridge, and pickup design that doesn’t dampen the top plate, Michi’s latest project, which we’re calling his Deconstruction Hybrid, is in a category all of its own.

Crackle and pop, we’ve got plenty here. This 2017 D-18 from the Martin Custom Shop is practically new, but already loud, proud, and ready for action. Sinker Mahogany back and sides paired with an Adirondack Spruce top and Tortoise Style bindings, this D-18 has lots of dry crunch in the mids, and a quick decay keeps the voice crisp and notes from mumbling into each other; excellent for the flatpicker who needs a dry, defined tone. A satin neck makes for silky left hand work (the easy setup helps too), and the whole package comes wrapped up in a GWW hardshell case.
