1967 Mattingly Classical, Flamed Maple/Spruce
A beautiful blast from the past. We’re happy and proud to have landed this Concert Classical from Robert Mattingly, which comes to us all the way from 1967 in Flamed Maple and Spruce. The voice is quick, lively, and immediately rewarding; the evidence of an instrument that’s been played in and opened up completely. At some point in its long life (so far!), this Mattingly was played as a Flamenco guitar, and has twin clear tap plates and nail marks to prove it. We’ve gone over the instrument head to toe and can confirm that it’s in great playing shape, ready for many more years to yet.

A fun blast from the past of Jim Olson’s long career! We recently took in a small body guitar that Jim built back in 1982, one of about two such guitars that Jim modeled after classical designs, but with steel strings. Mahogany back and sides, Spruce top, Florentine cutaway and 25.4 scale, and Jim’s trademark 5-ply neck are all here. This Olson has seen lots of play time over the decades, but is in fine working shape and has a quick and opened up voice to prove it. The smaller body dimensions make for easy playability, but the guitar doesn’t suffer for volume and projection. An opportunity to own a piece of Olson history.

Contemporary fingerstyle meets its perfect companion: our 2016 Greenfield G4.2. Michael Greenfield’s guitars are in the hands of some of our favorite bleeding edge fingerstylists, like Pipo Romero and Andy McKee, and here’s why. Michael’s guitars are exquisitely responsive to a wide range of attacks, they have a cleanness and clarity that allows complex voicings to ring out with the right amount of definition, and they play effortlessly. Figured Mahogany back and sides here paired with Adirondack Spruce.
This particular G4.2 is fully loaded with creature comforts for playability and intonation. The multiscale fretboard is modeled after Andy McKee’s personal G4.2 (26” bass to 25.4” treble), there are twin arm and rib bevels, and Michael’s heel “swoosh” combined with a Florentine cutaway for easy access to the upper dusty frets. This guitar growls, it purrs, it exclaims, it converses. We keep playing different styles on it, and each comes out beautifully.
A instrument like this 2016 Greenfield G4.2 only comes along once in a great while; get this one you still can.Other keywords: greenfield guitars, fingerpicking, dadgad, open tuning, fan fret, fanned fret, altered tuning, evo frets, adriondack, mainstage case

A work of functional art. This 2007 Petros Celt is, simply put, a complete guitar. The voice is pianistically tuned, it excels in DADGAD as easy as Standard, the setup is glass-smooth, the fit-n-finish flawless. Intricate Celtic knot work across the entire guitar, from the engraft to the wings of the bridge, all the way to the very tuner buttons and truss rod cover.
Brazilian Rosewood is here paired with Italian Spruce on top for an easy balance between the rich bass thunder and the bell-like clarity of the mids and trebles. This Petros is perfect for fingerstyle. We can’t recommend it more highly.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, bruce petros, matt petros, the celt, brazilain, irish, fingerpicking, guitar building

Taylor pulls out all the stops for their Presentation Series guitars, and we’ve recently landed a fantastic example of that craftsmanship from 2011 in Cocobolo and Sitka Spruce. Taylor’s proprietary Expression pickup system is included to transition into amplified territory effortlessly, and for this Presentation grade piece they trimmed out the entire guitar in Abalone and added a comfy arm bevel to the lower bout for player comfort. The Cocobolo lends a clear and balanced quality to the voice that we found worked well for both quiet and aggressive playing. The setup is slinky and smooth per Taylor specs, and this beautiful Presentation P16ce is in excellent condition to keep on keeping on.

The voice is equal parts silkiness and sonority: our latest Rein RJN-5C is a phenomenal guitar. We love the balance from string to string, the cool trebles and crisp bass, the way fingerstyle feels so natural and easy across the fretboard. It’s got a voice that’s mature beyond its years, and we can’t imagine how beautifully it will continue to open up over time. Cocobolo back and sides, European Spruce top, and Thomas Rein’s proprietary adjustable neck design to keep the setup exactly where you want it. Gotoh tuners upgraded with Snakewood buttons, a French Polished top for maximum resonance (and Catalyzed Urethane elsewhere for durability), Burl Maple rosette ringed in with green herringbone Tom based on an Antonio Torres design, EVO frets for longevity and a Florentine Cutaway for total fretboard access—this Rein is the complete package, and it has a deep and dynamic range to offer for whatever style of music you happen to be playing at the time. We’re proud to offer this brand new RJN-5C; it’s guitars like these that make our job so worthwhile.

Raymond Kraut’s 00 is quick, nimble, and effortless. Suited up with Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this 2016 model marries smooth response with a sweet bass register and well developed trebles. You’ll find a 14-fret neck and a 24.9” short scale fretboard, with a 1 25/32” nut for a touch extra room for complex chord shapes and this bigger stretches. Alessi tuners, one of Ray’s bespoke rosettes, Hoffee flight case, and like new condition make this an incredible find.

Livewire, folks! We’ve landed an explosive Kenny Smith model from Randy Lucas that dates back to 1999, and has opened up handsomely in the past 20 years. Based on Kenny Smith’s 1935 D-18, this signature model is outfitted with Mahogany back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a K&K Pure Mini (with vintage 1/8” input). Thistle headstock, Waverly tuners, and a sweet flatpicker’s setup with lots of saddle left.
The voice is clean and loud, plenty of bark in the bass but well balanced across the strings for an even response. This Randy Lucas KS speaks for itself, in no uncertain terms.

A powerhouse for the stage, the studio, and everywhere in between. Venetian cutaway to keep the top frets dust free, soundport to keep you high in your personal mix, Laskin-style arm bevel for creature comfort, and a B-Band dual source, UST + AG-MIC microphone pickup system. What’s else is there to ask for? The setup is a breeze, and we love the crunch and clarity that the Sapele provides to the tone; combined with the stiffness and projection of Adirondack this Beneteau has power and clarity in equal measure.

With Grit Laskin’s guitars, we have high expectations. For such incredible art inlaid across the body, the voice must be equally incredible to compete. This 2004 Mid-Size model is proof: Grit’s aesthetic is indeed matched by his tone. We love the voice of this Ziricote-and-Sitka–Spruce guitar, be it picks or fingertips. The arm bevel and soundport keep it playing easy, and the inlaid boxer at the headstock offers a stunning visual companion on those rare moments when this guitar won’t be played. And when it comes time to bring this guitar along with you wherever you go, it comes in a custom Calton flight case for worry-free protection. This Laskin has opened up sweetly since 2004, and it’s got a clean and well-balanced response that’s a delight to feel and hear.

The Martin this D-45 is modeled after needs no introduction: Gene Autry’s 1933 D-45, the very first D-45 ever ordered. True to those specs, this 1994 replica features a chunky, 12-fret neck, slotted headstock with Waverly tuners, and Gene Autry’s signature scrawled in MOP across the fretboard. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are paired with a tight-grained Sitka Spruce top, with 45-style Abalone trim everywhere. This particular D-45 Gene Autry is number 17 (of 66), and is in remarkable condition, especially considering it’s almost 25 years old! We love the feel of the vintage, chunky neck, and coupled with the 12 fret body join this Martin D-45 is a great choice for fingerpicking, flatpicking, frankly anything.

If it’s good enough for Michael Watts, it’s gotta be good enough for us! We love Jason Kostal’s work, and have happily followed his career for years now. This is a lovely 2012 OM done up in striking Brazilian Rosewood with a German Spruce top and Jason’s stained glass rosette and a Hoffee flight case. The neck carve has a full, generous carve to it that feels great in-hand, and on top Jason built a short, 25 inch scale fretboard to maximize playability and add a little sugar to the trebles at the same time. That sweetness pairs well with a warm and rolling bass response that fills up the voice, but doesn’t spill over into the other registers.

Warm, balanced, and sweetly responsive. We’ve landed a lovely Martin D-35 from 1969 with three-piece Brazilian Rosewood back in & sides, Sitka Spruce top, and an opened up voice to boot! With the right kind of mojo, this beauty feels easy and familiar in your hands, and plays particularly smoothly for a Dreadnought. Our resident flatpick phenom Allen Shadd liked the warm, mellow tone, and we have to agree. It sets this one apart from the typical Bluegrass cannon. It keeps up fine for flatpicking fiddle tunes, but it remains clean and responsive when played softly and for other genres as well. A dynamic D-35 with 50 years under its belt and ready for action.

With a heady waitlist for a new guitar, Eric Sahlin’s Classicals are a rare sighting on the used market. Today we’ve landed a single owner example from 1994 in Indian Rosewood & Spruce that’s completely opened up, rich, and responsive. Eric adorned the soundhole with an intricate mosaic rosette, and paired that with Rosewood bindings (which even follow the curve of the heel) and Sloane tuners at the headstock. This Classical has been lovingly played for the past 25 plus years, and bears the marks of a guitar that never had the chance to collect dust, but we’re happy to report that all that music has paid off for an opened up voice—and the playability is still sweet and easy to boot.
