The Merrill family is well know for building strong Dreadnought guitars that can light up a room. Well here we have their first ever Relic C-18, a powerhouse featherweight that will knock your socks off! Built on faithful 1937 D-18 specs with a hand carved neck and braces, hot hide glue, Red Spruce and Ancient Honduras Mahogany. They even went so far as to find the authentic Sea Snail dot inlays, Brown tortoise celluloid for the binding and end-wedge, Cloth side reinforcement strips, etc. We think this guitar came out amazing, it really looks and sounds like it’s been played for 70+ years. Here we have an excellent archtop guitar in Redwood and Walnut from builder, Michael Lewis. It’s obvious this one’s been played, judging by the openness of the voice. It’s remarkable how sweet this instrument sounds played acoustically, but when plugged-in, the true beauty of it’s voice, as well as the quality of the Bartolini pickup, really shines through. Sweet, fat, and mellow are all apt descriptors, and surely this guitar has seen many a late-night jazz club jam session. Additionally, the satin-finished walnut neck feels superb in-hand.

Here’s a great open-back banjo by Joe Mendel of Chesterfield, MO. It features solid Maple (reclaimed from a 100 year old Michigan farmhouse) construction, with and integral tone ring. It’s perfect for clawhammer-style playing, and has excellent projection and sustain, thanks, in part, to the laminated maple neck. It’s a whole lotta banjo for not much scratch!
2000 Solomon Phoenix European Flamed Maple/Sitka
Here we have an absolutely dreamy Erich Solomon Phoenix archtop in European Flamed Maple and Sitka Spruce. Solomon has been hand-building guitars one at a time in beautiful New Hampshire since 1995, at first in the style of the classic D’Angelico 17″ body design, but since the early 2000’s, he’s striven to express himself with a unique style that reflects his own design sensibilities. One look at this Phoenix is all it takes to see that he’s really onto something — the exaggerated carved undulations carry the eye all over it’s surface, and the pale beauty of the Euro Flamed Maple is utterly intoxicating. What’s more, the tone and playability of this great instrument are second to none.

The sweet, focused tone of the Cedar top is immediately evident, and is complimented perfectly by the Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, creating a voice that’s both utterly musical and authoritative. The narrower neck and radiused fingerboard make this an ideal instrument for the steel string player wanting to expand their collection with a nylon string.

Here we have a beautiful Mendel octave mandolin in Granadillo and Sitka Spruce. As the name suggests, this wonderful instrument is intended to be tuned an octave below standard mandolin tuning, but is equally happy in alternate tunings. The sound is at once familiar yet refreshing. The unison-string chime of the mandolin family is present, but the strident, higher-pitched wail of the mandolin is replaced with a warmth and intimacy that harkens back to the Old World. And because of the larger air volume within the body, notes ring out and sustain like a church bell. An exquisite instrument that’s different in all the right ways.

To say this guitar is rare is an understatement. This Martin Limited Edition D-50 in Brazilian Rosewood and Bearclaw Sitka Spruce is truly a remarkable achievement. Number 2 of 50, this guitar is as much art object as instrument, but if you dared take it to the Feed ‘n Seed for a pickin party, the voice would hold it’s own against more seasoned instruments. Lush, tight basses are easily coaxed from this beauty, along with well defined mids and trebles with just the right chime and sparkle. But let’s be honest, this show-stopper should be enjoyed in the climate-controlled comfort of a private listening room with excellent lightling, so all the intricate nuances of the abundant inlay can be fully appreciated. The extensive use of abalone, outlined in mother-of-pearl, represents the pinnacle of fine craftsmanship by the team at Pearl Works, under the watchful eye of legendary inlay artist, Larry Seifel, before his untimely passing. The Tree of Life motif is brilliantly executed, flowing gracefully up the fingerboard onto the headstock, while abalone purflings wrap around all edges. Comes with letter of authentication and custom leather-bound case with built-in analog hygrometer.
