For our first guitar from Simon he selected a rare and wondrous ‘Sinker’ Redwood top. This is rare Redwood salvaged after more than 100 years at the bottom of the Big River near Mendocini California. It is thought to have originally grown high up on the ridge in conditions that make it very stiff and strong. This Sinker Redwood can be made thinner than typical Redwood and we can tell you the voice is astonishing. The Sinker Redwood combines with the highly figured Walnut body to put forth a completely satisfying voice for fingerstyle or strumming. The notes are clear and articulate, yet round and warm. This top is definitely a bit more brilliant than usual on a Redwood guitar. We love the natural dark color which comes from mineral deposits in the river. We invite you to view the first of many Fay guitars.

Mervyn Davis has created a fresh and exciting guitar design that is not only artistic and eye-catching but completely musical and practical. His Smoothtalker design concept features very stiff back and sides, not unlike what many modern makers are doing these days, and a fan braced Spruce top that because of the body design is extremely lively and responsive. Soundports in the waist and near the neck flood the player with the beautiful voice. The result of this design is an instrument with serious projection and extreme clarity. The trebles strings simply soar, with more density and volume than the average guitar. The bass is focused and clear also with profound power. The Smoothtalker is extremely versatile and well suited for Blues, Jazz and any style where a strong fundamental and power are required. We even had fun playing classical and Flamenco on it. The Smoothtalker also comes outfitted with a Baggs Active Element and a deluxe Cedar Creek case. This is an inspirational new design straight from South Africa.

Ron Phillips started years ago making by hand his exquisite metal body resonator guitars. He uses German Silver and spins his own cones which enables him to get his distinctive sound that is at once powerful and mellow. It is reminiscent of a 1920s National that has matured fully. The attack is not as harsh as some resos and overtones are very musical. His OM body is 14 3/4″ at the lower bout and has a rich, full sound that is equally at home accompanying voice or playing slide or fingerstyle. The woven grills and diamond cone cover grills are not only beautiful but really allow the sound to come forth proudly and his laminated neck is ultra stable. If you’ve been searching for a higher quality resonator guitar, you’ll love Ron Phillips’ guitars.

The L-1 one is very similar to the L-00 but has a bound back. It’s hard to identify this one but it appears be an L-1 from 1920s. We refurbished it into a great player instrument that is solid and ready for serious playing time. We had master luthier Bill Tippin repair cracks, reset and refret the neck and install Waverly tuners. Now this is a real player with that incredible vintage tone but totally reliable. This guitar is perfect for the blues or rag player looking for the real McCoy without any of the vintage hassles.

This is another beauty that we discovered at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival. Like the ladder braced guitar we recently had, this one has vintage styling but crafted here from Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce and X-Braced for more of that classic prewar tone. John How’s Grand Concert is sized like a 000 guitar. We love the simple styling, the blank ebony headstock bound in Ivoroid to match the neck and body, the pyramid bridge and rope style trim. All classic details appropriate for a guitar with a voice that is clear and strong with snappy bass and powerful focus. This is a superb guitar for blues, rags, traditional music and much more.
