2005 Lucas SJ Brazilian/German
We’ve known Randy Lucas and his guitars for some years now. We have occasionally been lucky to find a preowned example of his amazing work but now we are proud to announce that we will be offering his work on a regular basis. This is particularly exciting for us because Randy has a long history of building the finest guitars as well as doing some amazing restoration work which gives him unusual insights into tone and integrity. Randy’s current focus is on his new wedge body shapes that are among the most versatile instruments you will find. He builds with only seasoned woods and hide glue and draws on his vast knowledge of vintage guitars to create his own wonderful voice. We saw these two SJs at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival and just had to have them. These are extraordinary guitars crafted with the finest materials on the planet. We invite you to read on and discover Randy Lucas Guitars.

Tony Rice is arguably the finest bluegrass picker the world has seen and for him to put his name on a guitar you know it’s special. The Tony Rice model from Santa Cruz Guitars is a powerhouse dreadnought design and this one really projects. The bass is huge and the trebles shoot across the room. The tone has a lot of character as well and like Tony it can handle multiple genres of music.

Kent Everett is a master Luthier who makes only 6-8 guitars each year. Every guitar he makes is an individual work of art with unique appointments. The Celona model is where Kent allows himself to stretch out and work with new ideas and designs. This guitar features a wedge shaped body that tapers from the treble side to the bass side so it’s slimmer near your chest as you play. This is an ergonomic feature that adds comfort but it also has a sonic effect which helps control the bass keeping a larger guitar very balanced. There is also a side soundport and a cutaway neck heel for easy access to the higher frets. The guitar has lovely adornments as well such as the dimensional headplate and backplate and the carved bridge. There is also a B-Band pickup installed. We don’t see many used Everett guitars and this is the first wedge body.

We custom ordered this guitar from Marc and we requested a set of his finest Brazilian along with a gorgeous ‘Wave’ rosette to go with the cutaway and front and back ergonomic bevels. In addition Marc added beautiful green purfling lines over the entire guitar, body, neck and headstock. It’s a stunning detail that is subtle but adds just the right touch of color to the instrument. Marc’s tone has been delighting our customers who have found them extremely versatile. They offer the ability to go from beautiful to powerful and everything in between.

Attention Blues and Rag players! This one is for you. There is just nothing quite like the sound and feel of a 30s Gibson for playing Blues and Rags. This one appears to be all original and has that ‘real deal’ throaty Gibson growl. It has the expected wear that gives it that vintage mojo and few repairs that were all done well. If you just have to have the real thing, you owe it to yourself to read on and listen to the clips for this black beauty.

Eliot Fisk calls Aaron Green, ‘one of the most promising young luthiers in the world’. Dennis Koster plays an Aaron Green as his main guitar. Since I met Aaron at Dennis Koster’s studio some years ago I’ve been a big fan of his work as well. His execution is so clean and the tone is magical. This particular guitar is so warm and rich but clear and responsive. It has it all.

We saw this amazing instrument at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival and immediately ask Brian if we could have it. African Blackwood is becoming extremely popular and for good reason. The tone is deep and warm with a smooth midrange. It’s unique and haunting and offers a beautiful color to add to any arsenal of guitars. Being a show guitar Brian added some wonderful touches including a CNC cut soundport, armrest bevel and extraordinary custom geometric backstrip and back of the neck inlay. The pictures tell it better than we can so please scroll down and enjoy this Applegate SJ.

The Healdsburg Guitar Festival is the premiere trade show for the builders of high-end custom guitars. For this festival builders go all out to build eye (and ear) catching instruments that show their finest work. That is definitely true of the two Charis guitars we brought back from Healdsburg. This one is an SJ with Bill’s new soft, venetian cutaway, something we’ve been suggesting for years along with both an armrest and a ribrest. It is adorned with beautiful laser-cut marquetry work on the fingerboard, rosette, headstock and the stunning backstrip. All of the inlay material is wood and it is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Such beautiful detail and it is equalled by the glorious tone Bill Wise achieves from his Charis Acoustic Guitars. This one is special, straight from Healdsburg.

For this festival builders go all out to build eye (and ear) catching instruments that show their finest work. That is definitely true of the two Charis guitars we brought back from Healdsburg. This one is an SJ with very dramatic Brazilian Rosewood as the centerpiece along with a totally new Rosette design and laser cut fingerboard inlay. From the Froggy Bottom website: “The Model H14 is built with a scale length 1/4” longer than its nearest relative (H12). The resulting increase in tension, coupled with its slightly shorter body and higher bridge placement, produces a guitar that is excellent for everything from ragtime and country blues to articulate flat-picking and strumming.” To summarize in our words this guitar is versatile with a capital ‘V’. The combination of gorgeous Koa and Engelmann spruce really works on this Froggy Bottom guitar. You can hit it hard or lay back and play sweetly it’s happy to go in either direction.

Here is an amazing Bashkin with many upgrades and unusual figured Nara wood. Nara is Filipino Mahogany and it sounds as good as it looks. The list of options here is a long one, multiscale, cutaway, bound soundport, Nara, Amber markers, Amber pins, Koa buttoned Waverlys, Calton case and a K&K pickup. The really cool thing is that together these specs create a very subtle, practical guitar that really works. We love multiscale guitars, you won’t even feel the fan but the tension is so much more balanced across the strings. The Sitka top here is also very special and full of silky medullary rays and French Polished for ultimate tone.

The Golden Era guitars from Martin are very well know by now to most of you. The reason is that the series is unique and really captures the essence of some of the older Martins that have written guitar history. This OM for instance has the bold Adirondack voice with great sparkle and clarity and headroom to spare. You simply cannot overdrive this guitar. The Brazilian Rosewood is dark chocolate and has lovely green hues in the sunlight. This one is like new and ready to be played.

This rare Byrdland comes from 1960, the first year they introduced the pointed Florentine cutaway. This blonde beauty is in great condition, the setup on this guitar is perfect and it plays like a dream. The Byrdland designs features a short 23.5″ scale which makes for easy reach and joyful bending. This one has that distinctive Byrdland sound and Al and I both love it.
