2006 Lowden F-10C Mahogany/Cedar
Here’s a like-new Lowden in Mahogany/Cedar that offers the classic Lowden voice at an excellent price. The high notes on this guitar are particularly big and sweet. In typical Lowden fashion it’s happy being fingerpicked or strummed hard. No wonder Richard Thompson’s been playing these for years.

Straight from the bench to the 2017 Artisan Guitar Show, then onto Dream Guitars to kick start one of our newest builder relationships–we’ve got our first R.1 from luthier Tyler Robbins! Tyler’s approach marries a fresh, tasteful aesthetic with a pianistic voicing that fingerstylists everywhere will appreciate. This R.1 has a medium-sized body with a 15 7/8″ lower bout and a slightly shallow C profile neck with a glass-smooth playability, which makes for an instrument which is easy on the hands and doesn’t scrimp on projection or sustain.
Robbins picked a dark set of Indian Rosewood for the back and sides (and inlaid the headstock and rosette to match) and paired it with a creamy, tight-grained Engelmann Spruce top for the smooth string-to-string balance that characterizes the R.1’s voice. A 13-fret neck ratchets up the sweetness a pinch, and dropping into DADGAD and beyond that sweetness remained intact, even bloomed. We’re excited to offer this gem for the first time here! We’ll have a blog post coming out soon where Tyler answers some questions about his build process and aesthetics, so be sure to check our blog to keep up.

Before his retirement in the early 2000s, Ignacio M. Rozas was a well-respected Classical Guitar luthier in the Spanish tradition (based, as he was, in Spain), and this 2000 Concierto 2 model proves that in spades. Indian Rosewood back and sides are here combined with a Spruce top for the classic combination of richness and warmth, and our own repair team recently refretted and set up this beauty to pristine playing condition; practically plays itself.
650mm scale, 52mm nut, and 56mm saddle spacing all make for a familiar play feel which is only enhanced by the 17 years’ worth of opening up that this Rozas Concierto 2 has undergone at the hand of its previous owner who purchased it directly from Rozas after meeting with him in his Spanish workshop.

From the famed workbench of Wayne Henderson, we have another Henderson F5 Mandolin here to prove what an F-style mando is supposed to sound like! This 2002 F5 has a gorgeous sunburst finish, Grained Ivoroid trim, and custom-made brass tailpiece with a hinged cover engraced with Wayne’s own moniker. Lloyd Loar would be proud to call this mandolin a descendant of his own creations–quick response, stellar string-to-string separation, and impressive projection.
Weighing in at 2lbs on the nose, this Henderson F5 is a Maple-and-Spruce featherweight in the hands, but offers some meaty sustain, especially with the crystalline treble strings. Lots of chop for a Bluegrass session, but clarity and articulation enough for Jazz and experimental flavors, too. There are only ever a few of Wayne’s mandolins available on the market: jump before this one disappears!
Add to Compare2007 Applegate SJ Blackwood/Euro. Spruce
If we could play guitars as fine as this 2007 Applegate SJ all day, it wouldn’t be called work. Brian bedecked this SJ with all the bells and whistles: Florentine Cutaway, Koa bindings and arm bevel, African Blackwood back and sides, European Spruce top, and the piéce de resistance, a lute-style soundport in the upper bout! Applegate voiced this SJ with a fingerstylist in mind; listen and you can hear each string ring clean and distinct, and the African Blackwood lends a cavernous, haunting quality to the bass response.
These trebles ought to come with their own nutrition fact sheet; they’re that fat and juicy. Playability is breezy and glass-smooth, perfect for swift and efficient left hand work, and this Applegate handles lowered tunings like it was made for it (which is actually the case). Kept in superb condition, this 2007 SJ has opened up sweetly, and is ready to make music for many more years to come.

If this 2010 Greenfield G1 asked you out to dinner, you’d probably have to say yes: it’s that smooth an operator. How could it be anything else? With African Blackwood for the back and sides, Lutz Spruce for the top, and an insanely slinky setup and C neck profile, this G1 is dripping richness from all angles. The silky trebles stretch suspended over a bed of velvety bass notes and an ember-hot middle register; played softly, this G1 purrs–add an aggressive attack to the mix and she howls.
Michael jazzed it up with many of his finest ammenities, from the Laskin-style arm bevel and Florentine Cutaway to the magnetic truss rod cover and Spalted-Maple-and-Abalone rosette. Honest Abe: all styles and genres sound fabulous on this Greenfield, from flatpicked fiddle tunes in DADGAD to percussive fingerstyle in CGCGAD or singer-songwriter accompaniment. Each time, the result is mesmerizing, the sustain prolonged and the bass thunderous. Pick up this guitar, play a chord, and you could very well wake up hours later without realizing any time had passed at all. Michael Greenfield, you’ve outdone yourself!
