2015 Lowden Wee Lowden 35 Twin, African Blackwood/Redwood
Livewire lil Lowden! George’s Wee Lowden model is a petite flattop packing some powerful projection and color under its slim hood, here in gorgeous Redwood with African Blackwood back and sides. This Wee Lowden 35 Twin was originally built alongside its WL-50 counterpart in 2015 with the Lowden 35-style appointments. GL Standard neck profile feels über comfy in hand with Lowden’s trademark satin finish (featured throughout the build here), and the short, 24” scale gives added warmth and bloom to the mids and trebles.

Smooth operator from tuner to tail. This 2017 Modified Dreadnought from Jason Kostal is truly a powerhouse guitar, with clarity, elegance, and precision to temper the raw strength of the voice. It’s worth it just to see the jaw-dropping Brazilian Rosewood back and sides Jason used, here paired with a creamy German Spruce top that absolutely sings. The bass register has a rich and rolling fundamental that fits in well with a warm midrange. The trebles are crisp and defined, and cut through the mix. A svelte florentine cutaway, combined with Jason’s trademark stained glass rosette, rounds out the picture of a perfect Kostal Mod D. Crystalline clarity across the fretboard; perfectly balanced from bass to treble. This is a Model R from Jeff Traugott that’s opened up handsomely since 1999, and offers a glassy, engrossing voice for the fingerstylist who makes every note count. Incredible. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with German Spruce on top, with a medium thickness, C profile neck that feels smooth and familiar in hand. We’re excited that this beauty has a Highlander IP-2 pickup system installed—reliability of a UST plus the warmth and breathiness of an internal boom mic. It sounds just as good amplified as acoustic. There’s hardly a mark on it; this has been a well-cared for Traugott. All the better to let the premium BRW back set shine! The grain has a gentle wave to it that’s set off by the brick-red hues and black ink lines throughout.
As do all Traugotts, this one comes wrapped safe and sound in a Calton flight case.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, fingerpicking, finger style

Dramatically figured Madagascar Rosewood back and sides pair up with a creamy Swiss Spruce on top for power, overtones, and control. It’s fabulous for fingerstyle, and the larger Grand Auditorium body size holds up great for strumming as well. A beautiful example of the 1960s Gibson legacy. This is a gorgeous Super 400CN-WAL coming to us from 1969, and from the Scott Chinery collection along the way. You can find it with its own spread in The Chinery Collection: 150 Years of American Guitars! Figured Maple back and sides with a carved Spruce top, Flame Maple neck, and original gold hardware. The back and sides feature a unique walnut stain that really sets off the honey amber Spruce top. The original pickguard has since succumbed to time (remaining fragments included with purchase), and later replaced with a period correct replica. The instrument has been recently outfitted with an acoustic pickguard (the original, nonfunctioning Dearmond pickup and replica guard are also included with purchase). The voice is characterized by a complexity and airiness that is reminiscent of a modern archtop responsiveness. Lively, expressive, and enveloping.

To celebrate #1300, Jim Olson pulled off a beautiful feat of lutherie that’s adorned with the inimitable Larry Robinson’s inlay work along the fretboard. “1300” is inlaid at the ninth fret in Black MOP and silver dust, with fine silver vines entwining around it among Paua Abalone leaves and Black Abalone flowers. The body boasts a fabulously figured Brazilian Rosewood back from Jim’s private reserve stash, and a Master Grade Cedar top for the classic Olson sound. BRW bindings, rosette, and heelcap; gold Gotoh 510 tuners; classic Calton flight case in burgundy.
It’s a feat just to have reached 1300 guitars in a lifetime, and this work of art is a proud testament to Jim’s career and passion.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, james olson, james taylor, red cedar, 5-ply, fingerpicking

So begins the next epoch of Jordan McConnell’s career in lutherie. With this 15 Inch Model, #071, Jordan will no longer be accepting orders from clients. Instead, he will be exclusively building instruments according to his own aesthetics and voice. We are so grateful to have been a part of his process for so many years, and it is an immense honor for us to continue to offer these new, completely Jordan creations, to you. As you’ll see, #071 is a fitting start. Here’s Jordan:
“This is the first guitar to have been entirely built in my new studio, so I wanted it to be special. The top is master grade Swiss Moonspruce cut in 2004, and the back and sides are chosen from some of the first sets of Brazilian Rosewood I acquired back in 2002. The Curly Spanish Cedar neck was from the very first order I placed with A&M Wood Supply in 1999, as is the Ebony fretboard. By choosing some of the oldest wood in my collection, I wanted to reach back to the beginning of my career while at the same time showcasing the direction my building has been moving in the last few years, both aesthetically and sonically.
With the smaller body and 12-fret neck join on this guitar, I chose to revisit the influence that the classical builders have had on my instruments and really dive into the intimacy and emotion that is inherent in this configuration, while still building in enough power and volume to dig in and have some fun.”Other keywords: joran mcconnell, fingerstyle, dadgad, fanfret, fanned fret, multi scale, multi-scale

Rick Toone’s eyes and ears have guided his lutherie career in incredibly unique directions from day one. Here we’ve landed a fabulous example of that with a particular “remix” of his T2 model from 2014. The T2 Remix combines Tele-style curves with a sleek, modern aesthetic and hardware, here a partially chambered Swamp Ash body with a Toone & Townsend tuning system and custom DiMarzio pickups from Steve Blucher. The neck is CNC fabricated from anodized aircraft Aluminum, as are all of the other components designed by Toone. The headless design also has an ulterior motive–the headstock doubles as a bottle opener (Ah!). The multiscale setup of 24.625” to 25.625” mixes a crisp Strat bottom end with LP trebles for easy bends. Frets are stainless (of course). The Blucher/DiMarzio pickups are wired with a 5-way switch and Tone Styler (StellarTone) 10-position tone pot. You’ve got an ocean of tones to dive into here.

Rick Turner’s approach to flattop construction is, naturally, outside of the box. This 2006 Compass Rose is designed to maximize the resonance of the Spruce top, and that is achieved by an elevated fingerboard and neck that cantilevers out over the upper bout. The entire top is free to operate as a vibrating plate, and that results in added power, color, and projection. Additionally, the neck-body join is fully adjustable, meaning the Compass Rose’s setup will always be right where you need it. The body assembly boasts a gorgeous set of Indian Rosewood that is tied into the Spruce top with half herringbone trim. The bridge design harkens back to early romantic guitars with its elongated wings. An L.R. Baggs Lyric mic pickup has been installed which sounds frankly fabulous.

The magnetism of a Tyler Robbins guitar is such that we can’t keep them in the store long enough to gather a single speck of dust. This gorgeous 2018 R.1c comes to us with Fiddleback Mahogany that rivals Koa for figure. Add an Engelmann Spruce top to the mix, and arm & rib bevels, a 13-fret neck join, stone-and-silver position markers, and a red Calton flight case, and you’ve got the very image of the complete guitar package
The eye-catching Fiddleback Mahogany lends extra crunch and bite to the voice, which really comes out when you dig in with a more aggressive attack, and Tyler’s extensive sustain keeps that woody clarity ringing out for a good, long while. This R.1c plays almost without thought, the setup is so slinky and smooth
