2003 Beneteau Concert Standard Cutaway, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
This is a sweet, smooth, and well-oiled machine. We’re in love. Marc Beneteau has been one of our favorite builders from our neighboring Canada for a number of years, and he is well loved in the modern fingerstyle world (if Don Ross is on board, you know he’s doing something right). Here we’ve landed a Concert Standard Cutaway from 2003 that’s opened up handsomely for a lively, expansive voice that balances lush overtones with a crisp and strong fundamental. Fingerstylists, take heed! Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up with German Spruce on top, and additionally Marc has added an arm bevel for creature comfort—plus a K&K Trinity pickup system. We just refretted this one so it’s ready for more action!

Lowden’s F body fits the sweet spot bill for just about everything you throw at it. Big enough to hold up under a flatpick and for strumming, small enough for intimacy and myriad tones with fingerstyle—and everything in between. This F-50 from 2016 is all that with the added warmth, color, and dynamism of African Blackwood back and sides (one of our favorite tonewoods) and Sinker Redwood on top (reclaimed from the Mendocino Valley in California), both master grade. 25.5” scale adds definition and crispness to all that warmth, and the GL Standard neck profile is a comfortable, familiar old friend. This beauty is like new and oh. so. ready for action.

Our own Max Spohn’s latest build comes to us as a bespoke piece for one of our clients! We settled on pairing Cocobolo with Swiss Moonspruce and a 25 inch scale on Max’s OM body for a balance between intimacy and power—both of which this beauty has in spades. We love the smoothly executed and colorful geometric inlays at the soundhole and headstock, which set this Spohn apart from the crowd in a polished, professional way that catches the eye. German Scheller tuners offer silky operation, and the setup is velvet, too. This instrument is just easy, from tuner to tail.
We deeply enjoy working with our clients and our builders to bring about custom builds. It’s one of our favorite aspects of this whole enterprise. Interested in one for yourself? Give us a shout!other keywords: fingerstyle, 2021, handmade, lutherie, rosette, spohn guitars, hiscox

The Goodall Concert Jumbo Cutaway packs several guitars’ worth of power and tone in an easy-playing, medium-sized flattop package. Versatility is the name of the game here, and this number from 2006 has got it to spare. This beauty features incredible AAA Robusta back and sides, Red Eucalyptus, which has a gorgeous, tightly interlocked grain pattern and rich chatoyance, paired with a Goodall classic Port Orford Cedar on top. The combination of these two yields a smooth, very balanced voice. The trebles cut nice and clean, and we love how easily this one shifts from loud and energetic to quiet and elegant.

This is the kind of guitar to write home to the folks about. We are floored by this little 00-18 from 1928. Just floored. The voice is immense, colorful, powerful, and the trebles have incredibly beautiful overtones that ring out and out. Fantastic for fingerstyle work, and it holds up handsomely under a pick too. This Martin 00-18 has been cared for over the years and comes to us with a clean bill of health and ready for more action. The Mahogany body has a few cracks, which have been stabilized. Bridge plate has been replaced, and a thin patch has been installed over the area to reinforce it—and the Adirondack Spruce top rings out loud and clear and true. This 00 very much punches about its weight. The setup is silky smooth to boot; the bar frets here are some of the easiest-playing bars we’ve handled in quite some time. In hand, this gem from 1928 almost floats away: it weights 2.75lbs. That’s it. These tonewoods have been torrefied the old school way! Super lightweight, super resonant. We urge you to snag this one before we decide to keep it for ourselves.

We adore this work of functional art. Kathy Wingert is one of our favorite builders and we’ve loved working with her for years now. Back in 2013 she executed an exclusive few Steampunk model EVC guitars, which we’ve been lucky enough to have visited with in the intervening years. Here’s one decked out with Cocobolo back and sides and German Spruce on top that’s a delight for both the eyes and the ears. The voice is balanced from bass to treble in the kind of way that gives chords consistent and even clarity and definition; it’s fantastic as a fingerstyle guitar. Visually, the soundhole is ringed in with a rosette of copper and cogs, which motif is continued across the headstock. There you’ll also find delicate pipework and a clear portal through the center so you can see the cogs from both the front and the back. For creature comforts we have a Ryan-style arm bevel and a venetian cutaway and a 25 1/4” scale that’s equal parts easy playability and power.

Mike Lewis knew how to build ‘em! This Fine Resophonics beauty from 2017 is a powerhouse single cone with all-Koa body, 25” scale, and a built-in Schertler pickup for dynamite amplification. We loved this one for its sweet spot setup that caters to the player who plays with both fingers and a slide. The tone is quick and lively, with an even response across the registers, which translates faithfully when amplified. Weighing in at a relatively trim six pounds, this (mighty) Fine Resophonics single cone is an easy player.

Power and control at once. We love Wayne Henderson’s guitars, especially his Dreads, and D-28 numbers 380 is a doozie. Brazilian Rosewood body with Adirondack Spruce on top, 28-style appointments with herringbone trim and a zigzag backstrip, plus Wayne’s fiddle headstock and Waverly tuners. Grained Ivoroid bindings plus a soft brown tortoise-style pickguard remarkably reminiscent of prewar guards round out the package. This Henderson has been played in and opened up handsomely since 2006 when it rolled off Wayne’s bench and into eager hands. The voice balances some potent drive with a sweetness in the trebles that really fills out the sound. It’s a natural flatpicker, but we’re happy to report it’s sensitive enough for fingerpicking as well.

New Zealand’s Laurie Williams utilizes gorgeous and unique tonewoods from his native land to build exquisite modern instruments—and here we’ve got the cream of that exclusive crop. The back and sides on this 2012 Signature Model are Laurie’s coveted “Whitebait” Premium Kauri, some of the most dynamically figured tonewood on the planet (to rival even The Tree Mahogany). This wood is so called “Whitebait” for its similarity to the lightshow to behold when a school of whitebait fish shimmer beneath the surface: the Kauri shines and glows with incredible depth and chatoyance. You can lose yourself in those depths. The top is also Kauri, and boasts a hand-carved rosette of intricate vines. Twin arm and rib bevels, venetian cutaway, and Gotoh 510 tuners complete the package of a true collector guitar. The voice is equally clear and colorful, with fat trebles that put out sweet overtones to really fill it out.

Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair with Cedar on top, 650mm scale, and 50mm nut. Built in the Spanish style, this Classical weighs in at a slim 3lbs 10oz, and plays effortlessly.

A beauty for all the senses! Well, maybe don’t lick this one. Here’s what it looks like when you’ve got primo Koa on hand as a luthier based in Hawaii—this 2005 Goodall KGCCK Royal Hawaiian. Tightly flamed Koa back, sides, and top, hand selected by Goodall for their flagship! Purpleheart bindings to set it off, and James’ beach scene inlaid with Pearl and Abalone at the 14th fret. The voice is lively, crisp, and quick, which is also a descriptor we’d use for the slick playability and easy setup. An L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup system translates that straight to the stage. This Royal Hawaiian came out of James’ Maui shop in 2005.

The ubiquitous Gibson L-1 came in many forms, originally an archtop in the 20s and later as a flattop from 1926-1937. Plug this one into the mainline! What a powerhouse. Steven Walter’s been building in the Humphrey Millennium style for years, each time resulting in a strong, vigorous voice, and this beauty from 2013 is just that. Great fundamental, with a powerful projection from the elevated fingerboard and activated top; plus twin soundports to add a bit of “me in the monitors” fo the player. The back and sides are dramatically figured Malaysian Blackwood, and we’ve got Cedar on top. A softer tone wood than Spruce, but here producing a crisp and dynamic tone. 650mm scale feels right at home, and Walter added a side dot at the seventh fret for easier fretboard orienteering.

New Zealand’s Laurie Williams utilizes gorgeous and unique tonewoods from his native land to build exquisite modern instruments like this Classical from 2011. The top is Sinker Paraoanui, specifically from a log uncovered by a flood near Laurie’s shop which he believes is nearly 100 years old; the body is a set of Ancient Kauri harvested from peat swamps in New Zealand’s North Island estimated to be between 3,000 and 45,000 years old! The neck is salvaged Totara, another NZ domestic.
