2013 Wingert Steampunk E: goggles and timepiece not included. Here Kathy Wingert has married gorgeous tonewoods—Cocobolo and Carpathian Spruce—with copper, cogs, pipework, and gears for a steampunk effect guaranteed to stand out from the crowd.
On top of that, Wingert has added a Ryan-style arm bevel, interrupted rosette, Gotoh HAPA tuners, and Fishman pickup. The trebles are juicy and charged, and we love the smooth and effortless playability along the fretboard. The slightly wider neck (1 13/16” at the nut) is a delight for the fingerstylist, and the Venetian Cutaway helps keep those pesky upper frets dust-free. Wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, this Wingert will travel safe and sound every step of the way as you travel between steampunk conventions and China Miéville readings.
Don’t worry, we made sure to wipe up the oil spills and mustache wax: this steampunk Wingert is ready to roll out of the station today.

Koa purflings throughout, and all wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case for maximum safety. The voice is characterized by a pianistic response and articulation; big chords ring out in full technicolor glory. Conceived in 1998 as a run of 91, each D-45SS boasts Alpine Spruce over premium Brazilian Rosewood, Stills’ signature inlaid at the fretboard extension, and the southern star inlaid at the pickguard. Elsewhere, this model is based on Stills’ 1939 Martin D-45, so here represented with the hexagonal 45 treatment along the fretboard, through-saddle belly bridge, and gold Waverly tuners. Here is number 19 of that ultra rare 91, single owner and well cared for. Available now, but it won’t linger.

Snatch this beauty up before we bite the bullet ourselves. A primo 2015 OM-28 from the fine folks at Preston Thompson Guitars with Shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce—yes, please! We love the feel of the V neck and the easy playability; 1 3/4” at the nut but 2 5/16” at the saddle for a bit more room for the right hand. It performs handsomely for fingerpicking, and has enough power under the hood with Adirondack Spruce on top to handle flatpicking as well. This one’s had an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system installed as well, so it’s ready for the stage! Outfitted with an anchor inlaid at the headstock in Shell.

Beautiful from tuner to tail, an easy player with an easy projection and happy played soft or strong, a real gem. We’re such a fan of this 2002 D-45V. The 45-style Abalone treatment is executed fantastically here, with Grained Ivoroid bindings to offset the Indian Rosewood body and Sitka Spruce top, and snowflakes & diamonds along the fretboard. C.F. Martin in Abalone at the headstock. The Spruce top is forward shifted and scallop braced for added bass punch, and the neck is carved with a Modified V to match the prewar classics with a beefier in-hand feel.

Bring to mind the video of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for “Imagine.” You know the one: it begins with the two walking along a misty path, and before long John is sitting at an all-white piano in an all-white room of an all-white country estate singing one of their most famous songs. Tom Ribbecke took this alabaster image to heart when he first conceived of this particular Halfling pin bridge archop project.
Indian Rosewood back and sides are paired with a three-piece Maple neck Cedar top which are both painted a creamy white. Simple Ebony bindings and trim delineate Rosewood from Spruce, and the Ebony pickguard and bridge set off the milky expanse of Ribbecke’s Halfling top plate—bass-side flat, treble-side arched—and the offset soundhole balances out the image. Beneath the hood lies a B-Band 22r UST pickup with volume control mounted inside the soundhole and terminates in the end pin jack. A 1 3/4” nut and 25.4” scale feel right at home on the gently curved C profile neck, and the setup is dialed in for slinky playability.
The voice is round, focused, and warm at the edges, with hints of punchiness in the bass. It’s not quite a flattop for brashness, and it’s not all the way an archtop for woof, but it blends the two in such a way that individual notes are three-dimensional and distinct, and they have a habit of hanging in the air. It’s easy to spend a long time exploring the tonal (to say nothing of the visual) nuances of Ribbecke’s unique top voicing techniques and the ability of his pin bridge archtops to provide a unique flavor to a wide range of genres and playing styles.

We’ve brought this bad boy back to life with a brand new neck from National Reso-Phonic, making this 1931 National Duolian the perfect combination of vintage and contemporary: plays like fresh butter, rings out like a veteran crooner. Steel body plus single cone resonator, 12 frets to the body, and the perfect amount of patina and play wear to look the part. Clean, clear trebles really bring a lot of color to the voice, and the bass and mids fill it out the rest of the way with a delightful warmth.

Now here’s a sweet piece of lutherie from 2001—Steve Kauffman’s (of Klein Guitars fame) Parlor model in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. What a gem, a beautiful small-bodied guitar, we’re conflicted about even offering it for sale. Steve’s fit and finish its flawless, and while this guitar has definite nods to Klein acoustics, he’s got his own style on showcase here. Slotted headstock with 12-fret neck (a Brazilian Rosewood neck, no less!) and long scale setup makes for the perfect combination of sweetness and power. We’re particularly impressed by the clarity and definition of the bass register, given the slim Parlor dimensions. This beauty has been well cared for and is in peak playing condition today, two decades later.
