2018 Ivanov Petit Salon, Ziricote/Swiss Moonspruce
Big voice, small mouth. If you’ve spent any time at all with us, you’ll know we love Dontcho Ivanov’s Snow Parlor guitars. Today we’re excited to offer you a different brand of parlor from Mr. Ivanov, a like-new single O Petit Salon model from 2018. Here dressed up in Ziricote and Swiss Moonspruce, the Petit Salon is a livewire for fingerstyle with its warm, wide, and energetic tone. It weighs in under four pounds, has a 12-fret neck for added warmth, and Dontcho built this beauty with a stadium-shaped soundhole in the upper bout to keep the player keyed in to their tone. Fit and finish are (as always) immaculate; Dontcho really knows how to best showcase the spider veins of Ziricote along the headplate and fretboard, and the Maple neck features stunning flame figure as well.

Here’s a dynamite OM from our own Larry Brown! This one is a 28-style with East Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce and French Polish that’s one smooth operator. Action a tetch off for you? One twist of the strap button and you can dial in the action precisely where you need it with Larry’s adjustable neck pocket. Gold Grover tuners, tortoise style tuners, and a 25 1/4” scale for a touch extra warmth in the bass. Larry finished the Mahogany neck in half satin, and boy does it feel silky to the touch.

Our latest Casimi is a sight to see, and a wonder to hear. This C2S was built in 2017 for a discerning client with dramatic Pernambuco back and sides and a, well, striking set of Lucky Strike Redwood on top. We find that the Pernambuco gives the voice an evenness and definition that would be a touch dry, but when paired with the Lucky Strike top the result is a smoothness and velvety texture that is pretty distinct from most of what we hear coming out of guitars these days.
The sides are inlaid with vines and Mayan glyphs which dovetail with the Mayan-inflected raised rosette (a Casimi hallmark) and endgraft. Red purflings along the Ebony bindings and arm bevel set off the Pernambuco and Redwood, and like all Casimis this C2S features a 12-fret neck join and deep Florentine Cutaway, their unique pinless bridge, and hollow headstock with Gotoh 510 tuners. All this comes wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, rest assured.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, casimi guitars, south africa, guitarbuilidng, custom guitar, bespoke guitar, pernambucco, fingerstyle, fingerpicking

Riches, indeed. This is a fabulous example of Casimiro Lozano’s mastery from 2003 decked out with Brazilian Rosewood as part of the 1A Rio designation. The Spruce top has opened up handsomely in the past 17 years, and aside from some marks this beauty is in great playing condition! 650mm scale with a Spanish Cedar neck, and a thin French Polish finish wraps the instrument up safely without dampening the tonewoods. Gold Schaller tuners with white rollers perform smoothly and squeak-free; and this 1A Rio weighs in under four pounds.

This one’s in a category all its own. In 1998, renowned teacher and music writer Robert Yelin commissioned this force of nature 14-string archtop from the one and only John Buscarino, and the result is quite a unique piece. The 14-string setup is essentially a 7-string Jazz guitar in double courses, with the additional strings adding a low B (or A, or C) to the bass register. There is a long line of 7-strings in Jazz, but this is the first time we’ve seen one set up with octave strings. You’d be amazed how much color and flexibility that single string (well, double) adds to your playing.
Tuned to A, chord positions which root on the 5th string suddenly have a fat bottom end when you fret on the seventh pair, instead. Or you leave it at B for easy access to more legroom for those walking bass lines. John built this one out with carved 5A Bigleaf Maple back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top, Maple bindings, and a flower-and-vine inlay scheme along the fretboard and tailpiece. The neck carve has a wide, shallow profile that’s comfortable in hand, and the setup has the classic silk smooth feel we’ve come to expect from every Buscarino.

Deliciously smooth from tuner to tail, sings as easy as breathing, wide awake and ready: our latest Ivanov Snow Parlor. This 00 is an incredible instrument, hands down. The trebles have a sweet clarity that makes the notes really pop off the soundboard, and Dontcho Ivanov matches that top end up with a clean and articulate bass and midrange for an all-encompassing, complete sound. This little guitar has a lot of tone packed under its pale hood.
Figured European Maple make up the back and sides, which Dontcho paired with a Swiss Moonspruce top and birdsfoot rosette. Everywhere else is Figured Maple, from headstock to endgraft. The result is a striking white tonewood showcase, more than earning its Snow Parlor name.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, woodworking, guitarbuilding, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, parlour, 0, 00, canadian, visesnut

This beauty has truly come to full bloom. We love the spacious, complete voice of this 2007 Traugott model R; it’s a fingerstylist’s best friend. The setup is silk smooth with a 24.9” scale that manages to ring out with exquisite clarity at concert pitch and right on down to C tunings too. If we had to sum it up in one word, we’d use “smooth.” It feels, plays, and sings like a professional.
Jeff used a set of premium Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides that boasts some serious figuring, and has an almost green hue in the right light. We’ve seen a few of Jeff’s guitars with this kind of BRW, and each one has been an exceptional piece. On top, he used German Spruce with gorgeous alternating colors along the tight grain. Elsewhere, this model R is appointed simply, as is Jeff’s style. We really appreciate letting the quality of the woods speak for themselves (both sonically and visually).Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, calton, fingerpicking, finger style

This Ramirez SPR in East Indian Rosewood and Cedar is stunning with its timeless good looks and timeless tone. The full on Spanish feel, look, and tone is at play here, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine at that Andres Segovia himself would have chosen this guitar. Tonally this Ramirez packs a punch and with its woody warmth and clarity this instrument is a dead ringer for a concertizer. Playability and feel are top notch as well, the action is smooth and fast and the instrument itself sits nicely on the lap.

Here’s a bombshell from Mario Beauregard that’s aged in and opened up handsomely. This beautiful SJ was built in 1999 with brick-red Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and an amber-hued German Spruce top, Ebony bindings, and Maple appointments. 16 1/2” across the lower bout adds growl and projection to an already powerful voice, and the overall tone strikes a fine balance between richness and precision. Overtones enrich the voice but don’t overpower the clarity of individual notes. It’s easy to see why modern fingerstyle players like the inimitable Antoine Dufour play Beauregards—these instruments make every note count. This beau has opened up so sweetly over the past few decades, and we’re proud to offer it to you today.

We’ve had a blast every time we’ve seen one of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Signature Martins—they really pull out all the stops. This particular beauty from 2013 is part of the Madagascar Rosewood 45 series, second only to the rare BRW 000-45EC. Madagascar can match Brazilian for glassy definition and resonance, and this set doesn’t disappoint in the least. Adirondack Spruce on top (a nod to the holy grail 000; ditto for hide glue construction), snowflake inlays, and custom Clapton crossroads symbol flanking the saddle on either bridge wing. This one’s in great shape, and currently has a pickup jack installed (the previous pickup was removed), and comes wrapped in the custom Crossroads TKL case.

Bill Tippin is one of our all-time favorite builders because he’s the complete package: voicing for modern clarity and power, pairing top shelf tonewoods with innovative inlay materials. This Crescendo is what happens when Bill takes the gloves off. Black Brazilian Rosewood that’s straighter than straight and 150 years old—salvaged Bearclaw “Salmon Lake” Sitka Spruce—wooden tree of life fretboard inlaid with gem quality Opals and Rubies—gold Waverly tuners and Abalone trim. Bill’s only ever seen three sets of Brazilian like this (and he nabbed them up as soon as he did), and this Rosewood gives this 2006 Crescendo an immensely colorful and enveloping bottom end. The balance across registers is exquisite, finely tuned for fingerstyle but with lots of presence and projection for strumming as well.
Will we ever see a guitar like this again? We don’t think so. If you’re interested in an heirloom guitar from Bill Tippin, this is your ticket.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, bill tippin guitars, al pettaway, fingerpicking, dadgad, brazilain, maple

The very definition of functional art, Grit Laskin’s guitars. Each one a piece unto itself, and this 2011 “Blueprint for Curves” is no exception. This guitar is featured in Grit’s book, Grand Complications (find it here), and explores his process in pulling this piece together with his client: “an element common to many of the themes we had debated was curves: the curve of 1930s cars, mid-twentieth-century industrial design, the female nude, Art Deco sculpture, and, of course, natural plant forms. So that became my theme, Curves. I went to work.”
And what work he did. The center of the fretboard is the scene of the actual blueprint, and as the waves of the fretboard extension and the Bugatti of the headstock come in contact with the blueprint they are reduced to line drawings to share space with a female nude and fibonacci sequence. The body of the guitar is comprised of gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood and a tight-grained Sitka Spruce top, with Grit’s trademark arm and rib bevels.Other keywords: lutherie, handmade, inlay art, guitar art, gotoh, calton, fingerstyle

The Rosewood Collings voice is here in full blast with a rich and enveloping bottom end. We love the combination of lushness and raw power; this one’s opened up handsomely in the past six years. Mahogany neck with a soft V carve, nickel Waverly tuners, and Ivoroid bindings round out the image of a Bluegrass cannon.

Here’s a fun one! A 2018 000-18 from the Martin Custom Shop in Mahogany and Spruce—generous lower bout, but relatively slim sides for added projection and power in an easy-playing package. This one responds quite well to a pick (and fingers, if we’re being honest; it’s very well rounded), and weighing in right at four pounds this 0000 feels comfortable and agile in your hands. The body shape and dry voice make for a killer instrument for a wide range of applications: this Martin Custom Shop is just one of those solid, all-around great guitars.

This 2020 Robbins comes to us in a smaller, more intimate package—with all the power and dynamism we’ve come to expect from Tyler’s guitars. This is our first R.2ca, a petite 12-fretter with a 15 inch lower bout, boasting twin arm and rib bevels, primo Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and a creamy German Spruce top. Additionally, Tyler adorned this one with a uniquely geometric rosette, florentine cutaway, and silver-trimmed resin position markers. And it all comes wrapped up in a lightweight Hoffee flight case.
The voice is characterized by clear and articulate note definition, and an even decay. We find this translates to a particular clarity when playing swiftly, or with complex chords; notes don’t get lost in a muddle. Rather, this Robbins has a crisp, oh-so-clear voice that’s a delight. We can’t recommend this one more highly than that.Other keywords: lutherie, inlay, luthier, guidry, galloup, resin, pearlescent, fingerstyyle, caltan, gotoh, cutaway, exclusive
