Brand New Bresnan OM, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Dan and Sean Bresnan, keep ‘em coming! Here’s a brand new OM decked out with their premium stash Brazilian Rosewood that’s paired with Adirondack Spruce on top for added power and punch. The slim lower bout (at 15 inches) helps balance the bass and trebles, and Bresnan voiced the mids to bring it all together with warmth and a colorful palette. To boot, this OM features custom Alessi tuners (some of our industry favorite tuning machines) and Dan’s #3 rosette in interweaving segments of Brazilian Rosewood and Koa—plus a BRW bridge, cuz why not? Fit and finish are of course flawless, and the setup is just as glassy.

The Santa Cruz model H is like a good friend: easy to be around, able to hold a good conversation, and ready for any adventure. This small-bodied beauty from 2018 is only four pounds, and responds handsomely to both fingers and picks; it’s a smaller guitar with a full-size voice. This one is decked out with Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, herringbone trim, and a 14-fret neck join for extra fretboard access. Grained Ivoroid bindings and open back nickel tuners round out the Santa Cruz image of the modern-traditional flattop.

We’re always excited to have one of Mike Baranik’s beauties in the shop, and this CX model from 2002 is a fantastic example of what happens when modern lutherie earns some age to it: powerful, wide open, easy playing. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up perfectly with a European Spruce top that’s opened up handsomely. It’s a great option for fingerstyle, with it’s even-keeled response and string-to-string balance. We appreciate how notes seem to really play nicely with each other, making big chords sound out crisp and clear, or fast passages defined. The CX body is a great middle-of-the-road shape for volume and projection while still feeling comfortable and intimate in your hands, it’s the sort of instrument you can easily lose track of time with.

We knew we were in for a treat the moment we opened the case. It’s not often we have an opportunity to visit with an older Traugott (here from 1997) that’s been played in and opened up, and this is only the second one we’ve ever seen in Indian Rosewood. Which, while we’re on the subject, in no way diminishes the voice on this one compared with its BRW siblings: the trademark Traugott clarity, precision, and projection are here in full force. Additionally, the Sitka Spruce has had over two decades of music poured through it, and it shows; the trebles have a juicy presence that cuts through the mix. This is Jeff’s larger BK body, moreover, which lends an extra helping of power and sustain while remaining a comfortable and easy-playing instrument (weighing in at a scant 4lbs 3oz).
It’s a powerhouse, plain and simple. Ready to have a Traugott in your life? This one is a steal of a deal.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, cutaway, calton, fingerpicking, schaller, fingerstyle, finger style

Gone before we could even list it! Another powerhouse M1 from Michi Matsuda, here for your viewing and listening pleasure. The trebles on this guitar are like an instrument unto themselves, and they pair up sweetly with a popping bass and well-defined midrange. Playability is silky to boot, and Michi’s one-of-a-kind aesthetics make this M1 stand out in all the right ways. Premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top (we don’t see that everyday with Michi’s work), slotted headstock, and a unique carved heel and partial cutaway—the list goes on. Alas, this incredible feat of lutherie from 2005 sold before we were able to even wrap the listing! But we often know where to find other Matsudas, so if you’re in the market don’t hesitate to reach out.

Long time luthier Tomas Delgado comes from luthier stock in both his father and grandfather, with whom he worked for a number of years. Today, he continues to uphold their tradition of guitarbuilding with his own work, and we’re proud to offer this gorgeous preowned example of just how far he’s come. This Classical was built in 2008 with premium Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar, and has been lovingly played in since then. And it’s a featherweight: right at 3lbs 4oz! The response is quick and even between the registers, and we love the blooming flavor of overtones in the bass and mids. French Polished for maximum resonance (part of what keeps the build weight so low here), this Delgado Classical is a dynamic tool for the serious musician.

A Dan Bresnan GS model just broken in enough to be wide awake—yes, please! This gorgeous grand concert was built in 2011 and has definitely opened up sweetly for the balanced, rich voice it boasts today. We found the balanced response worked well for both fingerpicking and flatpicking, and the setup is an easy peasy one that feels effortless in Standard or DADGAD. Of course this one is decked out in Dan’s primo Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, here with a #1 rosette in BRW and Satinwood and Alessi tuners. Now here’s an instrument to scare away the Martins and Gibsons: a Klein M43 from 2003. It’s a big boy! With a big personality to match. This guitar was commissioned by a client who hand selected a gorgeously figured Indian Rosewood set for the back and sides, which is here paired with a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top on Steve Klein’s M43 body. At 17 inches across the lower bout, this guitar has an unearthly growl and projection that fills the room, and the trebles cut nicely through the mix. It handles flatpicking just as well as fingerstyle, especially in fun altered tunings—and the slim neck makes for an easy playing experience. Additionally, this beauty comes installed with a Highland IP1 pickup system and a custom Calton flight case. This M43 features a single saddle, rather than the individual saddles that we see on many Kleins, and we feel that may lend something to the clarity and definition of the upper register.

Kent Hamblin’s 100th guitar is a phenomenal fingerstyle machine. And it’s decked out with appropriately wonderful tonewoods: highly figured The Tree Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce in Kent’s Grand Concert body size. The balance from bass to treble, frets one to 20, is oh-so-crisp; fingerstyle tunes in Standard or DADGAD are rich and complex, and at the same time precise. Playability is effortless with a slinky setup to boot, and when not in play this Hamblin is lovely to behold: these tonewoods are the cream of the crop, and the Snakewood bindings set off the Spruce and Mahogany handsomely.
We can’t recommend this Hamblin more highly: it’s the perfect combination of beauty and power, with the looks to back it up.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, gc, gotoh, ameritage, snake wood, evo frets, cutaway

Dennis Scannell’s True North guitars have an unerring accuracy and clarity that makes for exquisite acoustic detail. This 2007 Model 2 is the perfect fingerstylist’s tool. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (arrow-straight grain), “Lucky Strike” Redwood, and a 25.8” scale all come together in a rich, resonant voice that’s perfect for altered tuning territory. The Grand Auditorium body shape gives extra depth to the bass response, but this True North still plays handsomely and without effort; it rewards a light attack with a lush splay of overtones across the mids and trebles. This one features Dennis’s Platinum Upgrade P ackage, which includes a tapered body, Calton flight case, semi-hemispherical fret ends, and a double graphite-reinforced neck.

Now here’s a guitar that does. it. all. We’re big fans of multiscale instruments for all the reasons: better intonation and string tension across a wide range of tunings, easy playability for the left hand, and it looks so darn cool. Tom Doerr does it right, too. This is a Solace Select from 2012 that boasts a 27-25.25” multiscale fretboard! Sky’s the limit for tuning territory. The body is African Blackwood and Sitka Spruce—and Tom confided in us that this was the finest set of Blackwood he’s ever worked with. And we can see why: we’ve never seen ABW with such dramatic birdseye figure!
The tone is just incredible. Powerful, invigorating, room-filling. The bass register is huge, and with the 25.25” top end the trebles and mids strike a sweet balance between warmth and crispness. This Doerr works like magic in such a wide range of settings, we really think this Solact Select is a powerhouse all-around guitar.Other keywords: luthier, lutherie, guitarbuilding, doerr guitars, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, modern guitar, gotoh

Ken Jones brings an eye for detail, an ear for tone, and a touch for modern aesthetics to his builds—our latest Mountain Song Odalisque model is exquisite. Mexican Ebony (Katalox) back and sides with some dramatic figuring are here paired with a creamy German Spruce top in this 000-inspired body for crisp note definition and balance between the registers. The bottom end has a particularly sweet, warm pop to it that really fills out the voice. 12 frets to the body with a 25.4” scale strikes a fine balance between power and intimacy, and we found this Odalisque as happy in Open G or D as in Standard—as Paul would say, this one has a lot of gears for fingerstyle. A slim arm bevel and low profile heel, with the venetian cutaway, make for an effortless player experience, and EVO frets will keep you away from a fret dress for quite some time to come.

All this marquetry work is on top of a set of gorgeous salvaged Brazilian Rosewood from Bill’s personal stash. Flip the guitar over, and you find a dramatically flamed Redwood top and Koa bindings. 13 frets to the body with a cutaway and soundport, plus a 25 inch scale for added warmth.
