2011 DeTemple Spirit Series ’56, Swamp Ash
Mike DeTemple’s work speaks for itself, but we’ll try and offer our two cents. The Spirit Series ’56 is Mike’s take on the classic strat shape—with a few choice additions which make them another beast. For starters, Mike uses titanium components, from the neck plate to the tremolo, and here upgraded this piece from 2011 with a Fossilized Mastodon Ivory nut (and pickup switch tip), open back Gotoh 510 tuners, and a Red Maple neck. And the cherry on top: Mike’s bespoke, handwound Sweet Spot S2 pickups. Mike works his magic such that the signal is even and clear across all five positions, so you don’t have to worry about compensating on the fly. They play like grass-fed butter: top shelf fat n juicy.
This beauty has been cared for by a single owner since 2011, and is looking for its new home! Comes wrapped up in a G&G case.Other keywords: de temple, stratocaster, josh smith, red rhodes, alnico 2, electric guitar, shade top

This beauty from 2016 is an every-note-counts kind of guitar. Tom Doerr’s such an accomplished builder, we love to spend time with any of his builds. Here’s a beautiful example of his upgraded Signature Series in the Legacy Select body (small jumbo for power, drive, and responsiveness in equal measure)—decked out with a striking set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top. Ebony bindings tie them together, plus a svelte Ryan-style arm bevel for creature comforts.
And then there’s the multiscale setup. 26 inches at the bass to 25 at the trebles makes a great player for C tunings and right on up to Standard—it’s a fingerstyle masterpiece.Other keywords: luthier, lutherie, guitarbuilding, doerr guitars, fingerpicking, modern guitar, gotoh, fan fret, fanned fret, multi scale, multi-scale

The first multiscale Robbins R.1c to come through our shop—and we couldn’t be happier. This is a powerhouse with lots of gears, equally at home at concert pitch and C9. Honduran Rosewood back and sides pairs up with German Spruce on top, 26.25-25.5” multiscale fretboard, and Tyler’s latest interrupted, deconstructed rosette design to tie it all together. This is a medium-sized build at 15 7/8” across the lower bout, and we’re impressed by how much bass Tyler was able to inject into the voice; it sings out with the weight and presence of a bigger guitar. The trebles cut through the mix just as easily, and we were frankly hard pressed to find a note that didn’t sound good anywhere along the fretboard. To top it all off, Robbins includes a custom Calton case and Caseadillo case cover to keep this R.1c safe and sound on those rare moments when you aren’t playing it.

If it’s good enough for DADGAD maestro Pierre Bensusan, it’s good enough for us. Our Bensusan Signature Lowden is a smooth operator from tuner to tail. Built in 2009 but with hardly any marks at all, this Lowden is in excellent shape with Honduran Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, and a custom Headway preamp and pickup rig—so good. Lowden’s fingerstyle, low profile neck makes for easy left hand work, and of course it’s a fabulous DADGAD instrument. The satin finish will prevent any accidental audience blindness when you’re on stage, and the arm bevel keeps you playing as easy as breathing.

We hear this one loud and clear. E.J. Henderson’s building powerhouse traditional guitars in the spirit of her father, Wayne, but with her particular style and approach to alternative tonewoods. This 2015 Slope D features Oak back and sides and a Carpathian Spruce top, 12 fret neck, and a 1 25/32” nut for a touch roomier lefthand experience. The voice is crisp and quick! Notes fire right out of the soundhole with an even decay that keeps the voice clear rather than lush. The fretboard is decked out with southwest-style inlays, and elsewhere the guitar is trimmed out with Abalone.

Stephen Kinnaird’s P-1c is a petite powerhouse if ever we saw one. Modeled after the early Martin 1-18 design, the Kinnaird P-1c weighs in under four pounds with a trim lower bout of 12 7/8” and sides that taper from 3 1/2” at the heel to 4” at the tail. This 2010 beauty comes decked out with select Figured Maple back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top with dark sunburst, Florentine Cutaway for a touch of the modern. Brazilian Rosewood bindings, head plate, bridge, and rosette! And Stephen’s MOP inlay chops sprawling across the guitar from rosette to tuners.
Short scale at 25”, plus a 12-fret body join, makes for sweetness to mellow the bright Maple projection. We enjoyed putting this one through its paces in Standard and Open G, and while it shines best with a fingerpicker’s touch we found it also held up well for some strumming. The treble strings have a round, smooth quality that ties it all together in a sweet voice.Other keywords: steven kinnaird, parlour guitar, ameritage, englemann

This force of nature came in—and went right back out the door to its happy new home. We’re sad to see it go, but we know it’ll be cherished for years to come.
We love Michael Greenfield’s work, hands down. His stated goal in voicing a guitar is for “FAT tone,” and we’re here to tell you, he nails it every time. This is his biggest model (if you don’t count his Harp Guitar of course), the G4.2, with his DADGAD fan fret spread at 26.25-25.5”, Laskin-style rib and arm bevels, and Michael’s Palm-A-Way cutaway alternative at the upper bout. An Adirondack Spruce top pairs with African Blackwood (both from Michael’s reserve stash) for a balance of thunderclaps and precision. This guitar has gears, as Paul would say. The multiscale setup lends itself handsomely to DADGAD, of course, but we were simply in awe of the responsiveness and projection when playing down in C9 territory. It’s really a work of functional art that fills the room and gives meaning to the phrase “lost track of time.”Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, fingerpicking, canadian guitar, modern guitar, bespoke guitar

When gorgeous woods and Dontcho Ivanov get together, the result is something you won’t want to miss. We just landed a dynamite Snow Parlor from 2018, this time in European Flamed Maple and Swiss Alpine Moonspruce (what a mouthful). This study in pearly whites is incredible: heaps of body presence and depth to this little buddy’s voice, and the bass and lower mids have an extra dose of crunchy Maple crackle that really leaps out of the soundhole. With a 25 inch scale and 12-fret neck, Dontcho manages a top end that’s clear and bright but not brash (the downfall of many a would-be parlor guitar).
Additionally, the neck is European Maple, as is the bridge, fingerboard, bindings, headplate, and truss rod cover. Clearly, Dontcho’s relationship with Maple runs deep. Of course there are also Snakewood knobs on the Waverly tuners and a red-bound crow’s feet rosette which offsets the creamy expanse of Spruce surrounding it. EVO frets? Why not!
Ivanov voiced the top for added note separation and clarity. This Snow Parlor is teeming with energy, but it maintains composure to keep the voice clean and smooth, not harsh. If you’re looking for a Parlor to end all Parlors—this snow comes from up on high.

This is what it’s all about. We are so excited to have this prewar powerhouse in the shop! Martin 000-18 #31424 was built in 1927, featuring a long scale fretboard on 12-fret neck, slotted headstock, and of course Adirondack-over-Mahogany body. The original finish had deteriorated, so the guitar has been refinished with French Polish for maximum resonance, and as such has only a few minor marks—marvelous for a guitar of this age. The voice is exquisite. Open and lush, with a balanced projection that showcases individual notes as well as big chords. The bar frets have been recently dressed to play as smooth as possible, and we love the added width of the 1 7/8” nut for easy lefthand work. Our repair folks also reset the neck, so this 1927 000-18 is set up for another generation of music!

Ric McCurdy’s Perfecta model is appropriately named, indeed. Ric designed this model in conjunction with the venerable John Abercrombie to offer an archtop voice and play feel in a feedback-resistant electric stage-ready package. This beauty from 2009 is decked out with Lollar Imperials, twin volume & tone knobs, and 3-way switch at the treble upper bout. Maple body with a Spruce top and figured Maple neck; six pounds play weight; slinky smooth setup—our ’09 McCurdy Perfecta is defined by versatility, playability, and sharp looks for the complete package.

So good, and so gone. We couldn’t manage to hold onto this brand new Keystone SJ for a second before a lucky client snatched it up! This is our latest spec build from Keisuke Nishi, which Paul based off his personal specs. Thus, premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (as well as bindings, bridge, fretboard, headpalate—and neck!) with German Spruce on top, multiscale setup at 26.25-25.5”, and an exquisitely executed inlay sprawling along frets 4-10.
This one-piece BRW neck is a real gem, and part of what gives this Keystone its very clean, very dynamic sustain and projection. What a voice, this one has. The bass response is thunderous, yet paired perfectly with a present midrange and smooth trebles. It’s practically perfect.Other keywords: keystone guitars, lutherie, spec guitar, custom guitar, japanese guitar, ales, soundport, sound port

If we’ve played a finer vintage Gibson, we can’t remember when. This 1936 Advanced Jumbo is just incredible—plays like butter, rings out like so many bells, mostly original and with a clean bill of health from our repair folks. Gibson only built about 300 of these their cream of the crop slope shoulder dread; quite the upgrade from their “workingman” Jumbo model. The AJ features a slim neck profile for fast playability, and a 1 11/16” nut width to boot. 25.5” scale length, enlarged 4” soundhole, and a slightly tighter waist further separate the AJ from the standard Gibson Jumbo of the era, as well as the diamond and arrowhead fingerboard inlay pattern.
We love this guitar for so many reasons, it’s hard to settle on one. So we won’t! It plays great—has a powerful and woody voice that’s been well seasoned for the past 85 or so years—is in great shape for more music-making—it’s got the right amount of play wear and mojo to really look the part of a proper prewar Gibson—and it’s one of approximately only 300 built before Gibson revived the model in 1990.Other keywords: gibson guitar, vintage, pre-war, sloped shoulder, adriondack, adirondack, shade top, sunburst

Pop the top and ride, ride, ride. Here’s a sweet piece of lutherie from the one and only Matt Artinger—the 2015 double Convertible bedecked with Flamed Koa hollow body and Artinger Electric City pickups. The twin F holes are both “convertible” with their removable covers, coil tap for single coil crunch at the touch of a knob, and a tight, tight Flamed Mahogany neck to boot.
The tone of these Electric City humbuckers is fat, juicy, and rich. It’s so much fun to play with this powerhouse! More than dynamic enough to fit right in for Jazz, Blues, Rock, you name it. Additionally, Matt inlaid a series of vines along the fretboard and headplate for a final touch of beauty and elegance on this Artinger Convertible.Other keywords: cedar creek, electric guitar, hollowbody, hollow-body, gotoh

This 2014 000-42 from Moonstone Guitars is dripping with both prewar aesthetics and tone—42-style Abalone trim throughout paired up with 100-year-old Brazilian Rosewood and an Adirondack Spruce top. Short scale setup is easy on the hands and adds a nice touch of warmth to the bass response. Nitrocellulose finish buffed to a high gloss, Ivoroid bindings and Waverly tuners in a slotted headstock layout bring it all together.
We love how easy and fun this Moonstone is to play, with its silky setup and even balance across the registers. It’s virtually mark-free, too, so you’re getting a new-looking Moonstone with prewar-sounding tone.Other keywords: 42 style, abolone, brazilain, fingerpicking, adriondack, l120, cedar creek, pre-war

Big voice, small mouth. If you’ve spent any time at all with us, you’ll know we love Dontcho Ivanov’s Snow Parlor guitars. Today we’re excited to offer you a different brand of parlor from Mr. Ivanov, a like-new single O Petit Salon model from 2018. Here dressed up in Ziricote and Swiss Moonspruce, the Petit Salon is a livewire for fingerstyle with its warm, wide, and energetic tone. It weighs in under four pounds, has a 12-fret neck for added warmth, and Dontcho built this beauty with a stadium-shaped soundhole in the upper bout to keep the player keyed in to their tone. Fit and finish are (as always) immaculate; Dontcho really knows how to best showcase the spider veins of Ziricote along the headplate and fretboard, and the Maple neck features stunning flame figure as well.
