Brand New Musser Parlour, Brazilian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
Don Musser makes small guitars writ large: this Parlour rings out from wall to wall. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, bound in Flamed Koa, with Colorado Engelmann Spruce on top—and of course these woods are top notch, considering Don’s reputation in the tonewood world. In fact, this is a set of Braz from his pre-Cites “Stash Grade” stacks which was imported into the states in 1948. The Engelmann Spruce Don selected and processed himself, to boot.
The trebles have a lot of pop, and they pair up sweetly with the warm and present mids. The bass register comes in from the bottom to round it out. The setup is slinky and smooth, and with a 25.5 inch scale length it handles drop tunings easily.Other keywords: tone wood, fingerstyle, abalone, mop, mother of pearl, fingerpicking, parlor

This guitar has enough presence to fill two rooms. Del Langejans’ career was characterized by so many different kinds of guitars, and his 12-strings were among some of our favorites. This BR-12 is a beauty from 2008 with a Brazilian Rosewood and Bearclaw Spruce body, Rosewood neck, and an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system. The well-rounded neck profile feels smooth and comfortable in hand, and with a venetian cutaway to boot, this 12-string is a smooth operator from zero fret to soundhole. Figured Koa bindings tie it all together, and this Langejans comes wrapped up in its custom Cedar Creek case.

Robert Ruck was pure brilliance when it came to modern classical and flamenco guitars. We are quite excited to offer this 2004 Flamenco Negra with top-shelf Indian Rosewood and Spruce. Robert spec’d this one out with a number of contemporary innovations, from soundports and a venetian cutaway to a seventh fret side dot (it’s the little things that matter). The voice has opened up sweetly since ’04, and we found ourselves enjoying this one as much for Flamenco music as for the Classical repertoire. That cutaway is really helpful for keeping those top frets dust free (all the way up to the very last, 22nd fret!). This beauty weighs in right at 3lbs 10oz (you will hardly feel it in your hands), and we’re offering it with a snug-fitting Visesnut case for extra protection.

A beautiful pairing: Larry Robinson’s inlay wizardry and Bill Wise’s guitarbuilding masterwork. This is a gorgeous SJ model from 2016, hands down. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Sinker Redwood on top come together for warmth and sweet overtones, and the setup is typical Charis—smooth and glassy. Larry’s inlays take the form of a series of birds and branches sprawling across the fretboard and headstock veneer, and Bill trimmed the body out with flamed Koa (really making the arm bevel pop!). Upper bout soundport to bring it all together. Our repair folks recently installed a K&K Pure Mini pickup too, so this one is stage ready to boot!

Simon Haycraft and co at Preston Thompson Guitars have rendered a 00 quite unlike any other. This is Masterpiece #2, the Koi Pond 00 in Quilted Maple and Adirondack Spruce. Sadly, we lost founder Preston Thompson before this masterwork instrument could be finished, but Simon was able to share aspects of the design with him.
And what a design this is—a sprawling path of Koi fish and waterlilies inlaid along the fretboard and headstock, echoed by the one-of-a-kind scene on the back with Simon’s stain and finish techniques. The result is a three-dimensional effect of the Quilted Maple grain playing with the Koi fish; something we’ve never quite seen before.
This second Masterpiece earns its name proudly, and we’re proud to offer it to you.We and the PKT team will donate 10% of the proceeds from the sale to National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation in honor of Preston, and Partners In Care, the organization that cared for Preston in his illness. This is an opportunity to not only acquire an utterly unique instrument, but also to give back to both the Bluegrass community which supports Preston Thompson Guitars, and to local Bend, Oregon health care providers.

There’s simply no one out there quite like Bill Tippin. His instruments astound both the eyes and the ears, and they play as easily as breathing. It is, hands down, an honor to offer his guitars to the world. We recently landed a gently used 2011 Crescendo with exceptional Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Swiss Moonspruce top that’s quickly stealing our hearts. Bill’s voiced this one with an ear for crystalline note definition and separation between the registers; the sort of voice that brings everything out in brilliant clarity. So you’ll want to be on your best behavior. Flamed Koa bindings throughout the build dovetail into a Ryan-style arm bevel that’s a joy to feel. Bill’s signature soundport is carved out of the upper bout on the bass side, and you’ll find Fire Opal and Blue Paua inlaid into the fretboard, set off by additional Koa and Waverly tuners with Black Pearl knobs.
There’s so much energy just waiting to be tapped into, this Crescendo can take whatever you throw it. When played softly, the dynamic range doesn’t suffer a jot, and the clean presence of the middle register keeps the tone even and enveloping. How does Bill manage to build such incredible guitars, time after time? We don’t know, but we’re glad he does. This 2011 Tippin Crescendo is not one to miss.Other keywords: brazilain, moon spruce, fingerstyle, finger style, hoffee, flight case, waverlies

Are we excited? That’s an understatement. We’ve just taken on our first archtop from Southern California’s own Tad Brown—and this brand new CC Gold model is a dream come true. Honey amber hues abound with Red Maple back and sides and a Red Spruce top, pale Maple bindings (rounded for such a lovely play feel), and a CC Pickups ES250 Charlie Christian pickup. Slim, slim play weight (just a hair over five pounds, depending on how heavy your strings), combined with those rolled bindings, makes for an effortless player; setup is gossamer from tuner to tail. Rosewood center strip along the back of the neck as a nod to the vintage Charlie Christian ES-175s, and Tad extended that motif for the pickguard, cello bridge, and tailpiece in Rosewood. The ES250 Charlie Christian pickup is strong and crisp when playing electric, and this CC Gold offers a vibrant and balanced acoustic tone as well. One of our favorite Jazz players, Sean McGowan, plays Tad’s instruments—and we can’t think of a finer recommendation than that.

We’ve landed a powerhouse 2000 Flamenco from José Ruiz Pedregosa decked out in interesting woods and a gorgeous carved headstock and bridge. Three-piece Padauk back paired with Spruce on top, Spanish Cedar neck, Ebony bindings, and a 660mm scale. The voice is quick and lively with a crackling bass response that really pops. Easy action combined with a medium thickness neck makes for a great player. Clear tap plates and inlays along the back of the neck complete the package.

Mark Blanchard does. it. all. We love his flattops, his nylon string crossovers, and now we love his archtops too. This beauty comes to us from 2007 with light honey Maple and Spruce, and a Lollar gold foil pickup with volume knob integrated into the finger rest. Round hole rather than F holes, and we feel that does add a warmth and roundness to the voice, too. Acoustic or amplified, this Blanchard is sweet, balanced, and warm—easy playing to boot. 16 inches at the lower bout makes for a comfortable archtop build, and Snakewood bindings (plus knobs on the Waverly tuners) tie it all together.

James Taylor and James Olson are two names which need no introduction. Here we find ourselves with a recent 2017 Clone of the original Series 1 James Taylor signature Olsons which can more than make that introduction. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Cedar on top, of course, with dark blue and green Abalone appointments and MOP dove inlays. No cutaway, weighs just over four pounds, and plays like grass-fed butter. The original Series 1 JT Olsons are obsessively desirable and hard to find, and this Clone gives you all the look, feel, and tone of the originals with the advantage of being right here, right now.

Ed Claxton’s Malabar model strikes a fine balance between Parlor and OM: intimate and colorful dynamic range, plus added power and projection. This particular example is a beauty with Brazilian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce, 12 fret neck, and a 1 7/8” nut for comfortable lefthand work. The setup is slinky and smooth, holding up well for dropped and altered tunings, and with a sub-four-pounds playing weight it’s so comfy to boot.
The voice is lush and smooth, with an easy blend between bass, mids, and treble. Big chords sound out sweet and envelop you; a perfect instrument for spacious airs. Built in 2003, this Claxton is still in excellent shape, with the added bonus of having opened up for going on two decades.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, handbuilt, brazilain, wavily, fingerstyle, parlor, small-bodied, calton,

Stefan Sobell, Darrell Scott. Two of our favorite names, and strung together in the same breath makes for a powerful instrument. Enter the “Lumberjack” Model 1, built by Stefan for Darrell in 2019. Silky, dark Malaysian Blackwood back and sides with a Sitka Spruce top, Stefan’s trademark V neck profile, and a 25 5/8” scale length for crisp bass notes and explosive projection. The top is a step in a new direction for Stefan, lighter and more responsive, and we’re delighted to confirm it soaks up gentler fingerstyle work just as well as vigorous flatpicking. Additionally, Stefan outfitted this beautiful instrument with a Highlander pickup, Gotoh 510 Delta tuners, EVO frets, and the whole package comes wrapped up in an ivory Hiscox flight case.

Powerhouse and like new! We’ve taken in a Santa Cruz OM from 2020 that’s got projection to spare, and clarity to share. Brick-red Cocobolo back and sides with a creamy Moonspruce top, Koa bindings and Waverly tuners, and custom Abalone headstock appointments. Satin neck feels oh-so-silky in our hands, and everywhere else is buffed to a high sheen gloss that really catches the light. We’re impressed by this one, it’s got a rich and crisp voice that belies its age.

Here we go! This fantastic example of modern lutherie from Gage Halland is his DC-H model from 2019, here in African Blackwood and European Spruce, and dressed to the nines with EVO frets, a multiscale fingerboard, twinned arm and rib bevels (featuring his hallmark lamb’s tongue detail work), and pinless bridge in the style of Michael Greenfield (with whom Gage apprenticed for several years before striking out on his own). This is a beast of a guitar, replete with a resounding bass register and smooth trebles. It’s a powerhouse for just. about. anything you can throw at it.

Tonewood maestro Bill Wise has been crafting world class fingerstyle guitars for years now, and he’s nailed the sweet spot between easy playability and projection, sustain, and dynamic response. This 2008 Charis Grand Concert comes to us with Indian Rosewood back and sides, Cedar top, 5-ply Rosewood neck, and a glassy setup that practically plays itself. Additionally, there’s a K&K Trinity Pro pickup system installed, which is one of our favorite dual source systems of all time.
This Charis has an exquisitely well-tempered response that’s even from string to string and all the way up to the tiptop frets. Cedar gives a little more warmth and presence to the upper mids and trebles to round things out, and it really loves to go down to altered tuning territory, thanks to a 25 5/8” scale length. The voice has opened up nicely since 2008, and we’re happy to report that the condition is superb.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, IR, red cedar, fingerpicking, tkl, k & k, gotoh, abalone
