Brand New Indian Hill Concert, Black Limba/Lutz Spruce
Michael Kennedy of Indian Hill Guitars has pulled off a mean feat: this Concert model is vocal, articulate, and sweetly balanced. All wrapped in a gorgeous package with Black Limba back and sides and Lutz Spruce on top, soundport, and a tornavoz installed in the soundhole. The voice really is so, so crisp and well defined; it’s an excellent fingerstyle instrument in Standard as well as DADGAD and other more arcane tunings. The neck is finished in satin for a silk-smooth play feel. The body bindings are delightfully rounded for a comfortable instrument-body connection. Really, from tuner to tail this Indian Hill is a bombshell.

This is a beautifully preserved 1937 000-18 that’s very, very ready for more action. Our repair folks have gone over it from tuner to tail to confirm that, and given this Martin a clean bill of health. Adirondack Spruce over Mahogany, lightweight at 3lbs 13oz, with a few repairs over the years to keep it in tip top shape. We’ve got both the original tuners and the original case, and can ship this beauty either the originals or with the Waverly Relic’d tuners (currently installed) and an aftermarket case. The voice is crisp and woody with even decay across the strings. It fingerpicks very well, and takes to a flatpick pretty naturally to boot. We love the cleanness and clarity; the balance across the registers really makes for well-defined chords. This prewar beauty is a classic 000-18 all the way.

One of the most well-known names in modern lutherie, Ervin Somogyi. We’ve been lucky to work with his guitars for a number of years, and today we’ve landed a unique piece of Somogyi history: his first 12-String, built in 1977. Originally owned by none other than Alex DeGrassi, this Ervin’s first has Indian Rosewood back and sides and Spruce on top, 12 frets to the body, and a Classical-style mosaic rosette. The body dimensions are slim for a 12-string (14 5/8” across the lower bout), granting a warmth and punchy flavor to the voice. While it doesn’t have the signature bass response that Ervin’s guitars are now known for, this 12-String has a balance and intimacy to it that really lends itself to recording. The setup is slick and easy, the nut coming in at 1 7/8” and the saddle string spacing at 2 5/16”. It’s a fantastic 12-String by itself, and it has the added provenance of being Ervin’s first.

Kevin Chubbuck has been on the scene for a number of years now after working with both the Santa Cruz Guitar Company and our own Bill Tippin. This Rogue model was originally built for our shop in 2009, and now it’s come back to find it’s next home! Indian Rosewood body with Koa appointments; Waverly tuners; “slipping” purflings at the rosette, back strip, and fingerboard. On top, a special treat: “Grey Ghost” Sitka Spruce harvested from a standing dead tree in Washington State by John Wagner. This top is full of silky medullary rays indicating it is perfectly quarter sawn and special. You can hear it also as it blends with the Rosewood body to create a clear, articulate voice. We are proud to be able not visit with this Chubbuck again—it’s opened up handsomely in the intervening years, and it’s ready for more action.

The Santa Cruz Firefly is petite and powerful at the same time. Richard Hoover’s travel design makes for an über lightweight build (3lbs) with a 14-fret neck, satin neck and Gotoh 510 tuners. This beauty is from 2020, all Mahogany, and decked out with a light sunburst across the back, sides, and top. A short scale setup at 23 7/8” is easy on the hands and warms up the trebles. And all this comes wrapped up safe and sound in an Ameritage case.

Boy, this little number is a livewire. We don’t know what kind of magic James Russell and Eric Schoenberg worked on this Schoenberg Stella model from 2013, but it must have been a heady brew. Loud, energetic, crisp and defined! Are the words that first come to mind. It’s a fantastic fingerpicking guitar, hands down. Carpathian Spruce on top with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, 12 frets to the neck and a venetian cutaway, and a slick setup for easy playability. Part of what’s going on here is a build that takes a nod from a 1920s Oscar Schmidt Stella: the sides are more shallow than you’d expect, and that creates a fast response. Take this Stella model down into Open G, and it maintains that quickness and crunchy clarity. This guitar has us impressed, very impressed.

It’s really a lovely instrument for fingerstyle; notes have a sweetness and roundness to them. Frankly, every aspect of this GS model is smooth, from the neck carve to the high gloss Nitrocellulose finish. This Bresnan is a fantastic example of understated aesthetics and a modern voice.

Petite powerhouse! We love Bruce’s work; each piece is unique, and this Sexauer Companion is no exception: exceptional. Black Limba body paired with Engelmann Spruce on top and an easy-playing multiscale setup makes for a crisp, even voice that holds up as well for Standard as Altered Tunings. EVO frets will be holding up for a looong time before you’ll ever have to worry about a dress, and the incredibly slim weight of this FT-0 (a little over three pounds, really) means it’ll be a long time before you want to put it down.

If Paul Heumiller commissions a build for himself, you know the luthier has some serious chops. This Buendia Jumbo is proof of Leo’s talent. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, french polished Adirondack Spruce top (from Randy Lucas himself), green-dyed Maple Burl rosette–this is just the start. The neck is carved from Indian Rosewood, and has a 12-fret neck join to marry warmth to Leo’s Jumbo body. Of course Paul also requested a multiscale fretboard (26.25″ to 25.5″) and a Florentine Cutaway to keep all those slant frets accessible. The bass response is expansive, but crisply defined. That clarity pairs well with a smooth upper register, and an articulate midrange for fingerstyle heaven.
Leo Buendia’s guitars are inspiration carved from wood and steel. Of instruments of this calibre, there are but a few. This one has come up for sale, and we can’t recommend it highly enough!

The trebles are characterized by a smooth, round flavor that pairs up well with the mids and bass. 650mm scale on a Spanish Cedar neck, and dependable Gotoh tuners round it all out. The neck profile comes in at a rounded U, and feels slightly slender in our hands; the setup is superb.

Big boy, big sound, big personality! 1939 Gibson SJ-100, anybody? Adirondack Spruce over Mahogany, 5-piece Maple neck, and a unique set of appointments and design features that step the SJ-100 outside the bounds of a regular Gibson Super Jumbo flattop. For the early 1939 SJ-100, Gibson used a mustache bridge with individual saddles, stairstep headstock, triple bindings on top, and butterfly Kluson tuners. 17 inches across the lower bout for a thunderous bass response, precisely what you’d expect from a flattop this fierce, and this beauty is only a little over five pounds in weight; easy to keep on playing. Original case, original components, and our repair shop went over the SJ-100 from tuner to tail to make sure it’s up to snuff and ready for action. They confirmed that the finish is original to boot, with some finish repairs over the years.
