2019 Somogyi Studio, Wenge/Sitka Spruce
Ervin Somogyi takes his hallmark model, the modern fingerstylist’s dream machine Modified Dreadnought, and shrinks it by 4% for the Studio model you see here. This beauty is nearly new, from 2019, and already oh so lively. Wenge back and sides paired with a tight-grained Sitka Spruce top, Ervin’s pixelated rosette, and a slinky smooth setup that’s a delight for the fingers. One of the virtues of Ervin’s Studio model is an increased balance between bass and treble, with a slightly more articulate midrange and warmth. The iconic Somogyi bass response is all here, and it mates sweetly with the rest of the voice for fingerstyle royalty. Weighing in at a trim 4lbs 4oz, this 2019 Somogyi Studio is lively, exquisite, and ready for action.

What can be said of a Somogyi that hasn’t already been said? That Ervin’s Mod D has revolutionized fingerstyle guitar construction, or his aesthetic innovations have re-engineered what art we though was possible through a flattop canvas?
This 2005 Mod D was built for the 2005 NAMM show, and boasts a few details that make it stand out, even in the rarified air of Somogyis. The Mahogany neck features a pointed heelblock and paired inlays; the segmented rosette (a Somogyi hallmark) is here encased in a larger band of Spruce; a bit extra bass and projection from the non-cutaway body; Brazilian Rosewood to die for, and Sitka Spruce to match—and for all of that, an delectably responsive and articulate guitar for whatever style you happen to be playing in.
This beauty was sold before we could even list it on the site!

A lovely (and lively) little gem from E.J. Henderson! This 2016 0-42K is a firecracker of an O guitar, decked out with highly flamed Koa for the back, sides, top, and headstock veneer. 42-style Abalone trim rings in the top and soundhole, and Jayne added an arcing MOP inlay too the headstock as a minimalist vine. 12 frets to the body, short scale, with a 1 25/32” nut for a smidge extra finger room. Weighing in at a scant 3lbs 7oz, it’s a miracle this E.J. Henderson doesn’t float away at the first pluck of the strings.

Add to Compare2009 Kraut OM, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
A 2009 OM from Ray Kraut? Yes, please! This one is among the finest fingerstyle guitars on the market. The voice is equal parts cannon and serenade, with rich, rolling basses that fill out the tone and a flawless string-to-string balance that keeps the voice even and articulate for both aggressive and delicate attacks. The Brazilian Rosewood of the back, sides, fretboard, and bridge is gorgeous, not to mention the German Spruce top–a quick peek in the soundhole reveals how Ray is able to make such a loud and projective guitar: both the back and top are delicately braced with a series of Xs that maximize both plates’ ability to vibrate as freely as possible. The effect is two-fold: first, the projection and sustain are fearsome, and second, the middle register has a fully-developed warmth and presence that gives the overall voice a complex and expressive character.
With such dynamic bracing, wide saddle and scalloped nut, this Kraut fits firmly in the contemporary fingerstyle guitar camp, and the addition of the pinless bridge is a further improvement to Ray’s unified aesthetic ideal for his designs. Take it from us: this is a guitar worth playing.

Add to Compare1993 Sobell Double Decker, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
One of the guys here had to stop playing this guitar when his hands started shaking: the response of this Double Decker is siesmic. Stefan Sobell makes an incredible guitar these days, and it’s obvious from guitars like this big boy from 1993 that he’s had his master’s touch for an incredibly long time.
This is the sort of guitar which, when played, can reduce a player to monosyllabic sentences. It’s hard to say anything more complex than, “Woah,” after you’ve experienced the sheer complexity of this guitar’s voice. The Mahogany neck features Sobell’s flattened C profile (slim and slick) and meets the body at the 12th fret, increasing the warmth of the mids and moving the bridge further down from the soundhole in order to better active the German Spruce top. The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides feature dramatic, twisting grain patterns and are still stable and crack free after 25 years of music.
The setup threads the needle for both fingerstyle and flatpicking, especially if you like going into dropped tunings. Just strum an open chord, and you’ll be amazed at the sheer volume of this Double Decker. The velvet-rich bass response pairs with sweet, fat trebles—and even when you dig in with aggressive attack the voice remains articulate and defined.
The Double Decker is a force of nature, plain and simple.

Richard Hoover and his team of time-tested luthiers offer a stable of incredible instruments for every walk of an acoustic guitarist’s life. We’ve recently taken in a 2014 Style 1 with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce that is a killer example of the Santa Cruz team at the top of their game. The Style 1 is based off Martin’s Size 1 guitar, which around the turn of the century (well, last century) was one of their largest guitar models. How times change! Today, the SCGC Style 1 is a compact, easy-playing, and rich-singing guitar that’s a great choice for fingerpicking blues, sweet old time accompaniment, or really whatever the musician’s heart desires. This beauty has Herringbone trim, 12 frets to the neck, and a slotted headstock with Gotoh tuners, and the whole package comes wrapped up in a snug Ameritage case.

Martin Simpson and Stefan Sobell are two of the main reasons Dream Guitars ever got started! Naturally, Sobell’s Martin Simpson Signature model is a force to be reckoned with. This is a fantastic example from 2010 in African Blackwood and German Spruce with some honest play wear that tells us this guitar hasn’t been collecting dust in its case at all.
Big voice from a big box (over 16.5 inches at the lower bout), but with Sobell’s heavily radiused top and back this MS Signature still fits easily in our arms, and is a very easy player with a slick setup and a wide V neck. This Sobell is a natural choice for DADGAD, but it can really handle a variety of tunings up and down from there, and the 1.78” nut gives the left hand a bit more room to get around those complex chord voicings. The tone of this Martin Simpson Signature is lively and very energetic, and it responds handsomely to a more aggressive attack. Want a guitar to handle whatever you can throw at it? This Sobell is more than up for the task: if it can keep up with Martin Simpson, you know it’s worth it’s weight in gold.Other keywords: finger style, fingerpicking, abw, blackwood, calton case, crow’s feet, crow’s foot, purfling, lutherie, luthier, gotoh

Rare and otherwise unobtainable guitars? That’s why we got in this business in the first place, and this T.J. Thompson-built Schoenberg Soloist is our mission statement to a T. Sporting a gorgeous set of Indian Rosewood for the back and sides and Sitka Spruce for the top, this guitar packs a fiendish amount of punch into a comfortable OM-size package. This is one of the 150 guitars which Eric Schoenberg designed and T.J. Thompson crafted the various parts before sending the instrument to Martin for final assembly and finishing.
Each Schoenberg Soloist from 1990 to 1994 is a resounding example of T.J.’s meticulous craftsmanship: this guitar has a crisp, focused voice which gives fingerpicking arrangements richness and clarity–but if flatpicking is more to your liking, this Soloist has a lively response to both strumming and lead work. Featuring a soft V-shape neck, your left hand won’t wear out any time soon; and that’s a good thing, because you won’t want to put this guitar down once you pick it up. Speaking of which, this guitar also comes with a dynamite Highlander IP-1 pickup, so no worries when it comes time to gig out.
