Not only is this instrument beautiful in sight and sound, but also in its construction, which is one of the more unique instruments we have seen in quite some time. Where to begin? Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, Sitka Spruce for the top (this Sitka was cut in the 1970s; it’s been well-seasoned). As for the back and sides, this guitar features an active hollow core back, similar to a double top, carbon fiber bridge plate, U brace, elevated fingerboard, and a cylindrically arched top and back. We could go on and on about what all makes this absolute beast of a guitar unique and powerful. 2003 Ryan Abbey Grand Parlor, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Kevin Ryan’s Abbey model takes the usual Parlor proportions and fills them out just enough to make it a Grand Parlor instead—domed back, 14 inches across the lower bout, and a 25 inch scale come together for warmth and power in equal measure. Add to that a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top, and the result is an even richer, enveloping little guitar. Fingerstyle is the name of the game; the setup is silky smooth for effortless playing. Kevin’s slim neck profile fits comfortably in the hand, and it’s easy to lose track of time playing this one. This beauty from 2003 has been very well maintained—hardly a mark on it—and comes wrapped in a Calton flight case for maximum safety.

This Klein M43 from 1997 offers a subtle glimpse into what Klein & Kauffman guitars are renowned for today. This variation features an offset soundhole, which creates an even more unique sonic soundscape with this instrument. Wielding it feels powerful; hearing it is moving, and looking at it encompasses both of those experiences. The Maple back and sides exhibit extreme chatoyance, reminiscent of looking into the bottom of a swimming pool in summer. The spruce top has aged just as finely in sound as it has in hue. Brand New TreeHouse Blue Ember, Maple/Adirondack Spruce
A first for us here at the shop from Zach Lefebvre, a brand new TreeHouse Blue Ember. It’s rare to find such unique instruments, where form certainly follows function so well. A whole lot of tone, and even more character. The back and sides’ hue harkens back to custom Stratocasters of the late 50s and early 60s, with an incredibly visually pleasing stain on top. The single coil tone combined with its acoustic resonance makes for an intriguing and fantastic musical experience. Maple for the back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top.

2016 EJ Henderson 000-42, Walnut/Red Spruce
A rare treat for us today: a gorgeous 2016 000-42 from Asheville’s own EJ Henderson. Coming from the lineage of her father, Wayne Henderson, Jayne’s been building under her own name for a number of years, honing her craft and building up an impressive body of work–and wait list. Highly figured Black Walnut back and sides with dramatic rippling figure, Red Spruce top (plus dark sunburst), and extensive sparkling Abalone 42-style appointments along the body and position markers. Then we come to the bespoke catfish inlaid in great detail between the G and D tuners at the back of the headstock. Jayne’s inlay skill renders crisp lines and fluid curves, leaning on her eye to match the wavy pattern of each piece of pearl to mirror the scales of the fish. The voice is powerful and expansive, and it really opens up after a few minutes’ playtime—this Ryan becomes a whole ‘nother beast.
