Keisuke Nishi of Keystone Guitars recently finished up a commission for one of our clients after they played our last Keystone—and this SJ is 100% magic. Supremely rich, red Cocobolo back and sides are paired with a German Spruce top, Keisuke’s scalloped Burl rosette, and bedecked with Ogawa Inlay Craft inlays along the headstock and fretboard in a motif of a full moon over low hills.

German Silver construction throughout, 12 frets to the body, and Ron’s art deco aesthetic all come together in a parlor-sized package that’s as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears. Our Phillips is an obvious choice for Open D or Open G, but honestly it sounds fantastic even in Standard, with a hybrid setup that works for fingers and slide. The sort of Resonator that you instantly settle into, lose track of time with, never want to let go.

We’ve landed a dynamite 2011 Flamenco Negra from Lester DeVoe that boasts stunning Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, a European Spruce top, and an ultra slim, 3lbs 4oz punching weight. This guitar is fabulous, hands down. Fit and finish is flawless, the build quality just so, and we love the dynamic range of the voice. This 2011 Flamenco Negra is equally at home for Jazz, Bossa Nova, straight ahead Classical, and of course Flamenco. The neck is carved from highly figured Spanish Cedar, and the headstock features Sloane tuners with Ebony knobs and black rollers. Twin clear tap plates flank the soundhole, and the scale length comes in at an easy-playing 650mm. All wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, what’s not to love?

Larry Robinson executed an impressive inlay scheme along the fretboard to celebrate this milestone guitar. Honestly, one builder reaching 1600 guitars? Simply incredible. This one came in, and went right back out the door before we could even list it.

Balance and elegance are the first two words that come to mind with this guitar in hand. Joel Michaud’s sense of line, curve—and most importantly, tone—come together in this 2015 00-R in a way that many builders aim for, but few achieve. The woods are top shelf: The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Swiss Spruce on top—and Joel crafted a rosette that’s sunk into the top for a distinct touch. Next to that is a tapered fretboard extension that offers the elusive 24th fret to the fearless musician who needs to go so high. A sharp Florentine Cutaway and Scheller tuners round out the image.
The tone is smooth and easy, balanced from bass to treble, and this Michaud is set up for effortless playability. The smaller body dimensions, combined with a short 25” scale, make for warm, round trebles, and we love how Joel manages to keep the guitar’s response so even along the fretboard. We’ve got a special treat of Lars Rasmussen’s in the shop today: a Model O in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce. Built in 2018 but shining like a freshly minted penny, this Rasmussen is a phenomenal fingerstyle instrument: the voice is that sweet blend between dark, voluminous bass response and smooth trebles. 12 frets to the body and a short scale fretboard make for an imminently playable guitar, and the slim dimensions of Lars’ Model O strike a fine balance between the weight of the neck and the weight of the body—the whole package is a featherweight 3lbs 12oz. Fit and finish are superb, and premium appointments like Brazilian Rosewood bindings and Alessi tuners make this one really stand out. Comes wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case.

In the Rasmussen family, the Model S stands for Small Dreadnought—plenty of power, engineered for effortless playability. We’ve got here an almost new Model S from 2018 that boasts all of that and more, specifically with some seriously beautiful tonewoods. Premium Brazilian Rosewood makes up the back, sides, bridge, fretboard, rosette, headstock veneer, and bindings (that’s a lot of BRW!), with Italian Spruce on top and a soft V Honduran Mahogany neck with 14 frets to the body. Alessi tuners, Florentine Cutaway, and EVO frets are also included. We love the responsiveness across the registers, and how much dynamism and color Lars has managed to coax out of the trebles in particular. This Rasmussen is equally at home in Standard or DADGAD.

Oh, the joy of playing a light, lively, responsive guitar. This Big Hollow OM is nearly new from 2018, features primo tonewoods (Lutz Spruce on top, Flamed Koa back and sides), and plays like a sweet dream. The trim punching weight of under 4lbs makes for a comfortable session guitar, and the satin-finished neck is equally easy on the hands. The balance from bass to treble is even and smooth, which we often find on the best Koa guitars, but there’s a sweetness unique to the treble response that really sets this Big Hollow apart from the crowd. Alessi tuners, Bevan’s upgraded MOP girl inlaid into the headstock, and Bloodwood bindings are just some of the upgrades (there are Gold EVO frets and an Ameritage case as well).

Gorgeous from tuner to tailblock, lively at a touch and velvet beneath your fingers—this handsome 1994 Larrivee LCJ-10 Custom is a winner. Indian Rosewood back and sides paired with a Sitka Spruce top and Honduran Mahogany neck. The top is trimmed out in Mother-Of-Pearl and the fretboard position markers as well, but the real gem here is the “Rose Lady” inlay treatment across the headstock. Built in 1994, this Larrivee has had several decades to wake up, and it responds with a wide open voice that soaks up fingerpicking just as well as flatpicking.

The original household name when it comes to resonator guitars—National Reso-Phonic is our hands down favorite. We just landed a fantastic example of a 2003 Style 3 tricone in Polished Brass with gorgeous lily-of-the-valley engraving along the top, sides, back, and resonator plate. Basically every metal surface except the frets! The setup is slick and easy and currently dialed in for fingerstyle play rather than as a dedicated slide guitar. At about nine and a half pounds, this National is no featherweight, but we feel that girth translates into sweet, fat, juicy tone that’s hard to find elsewhere.

If it’s good enough for DADGAD maestro Pierre Bensusan, it’s good enough for us. Our Bensusan Signature Lowden is a smooth operator from tuner to tail. Built in 2015 but with hardly any marks at all, this Lowden is in excellent shape with Honduran Rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top, and the Lowden Fingerstyle Neck profile. Of course it’s a fabulous DADGAD instrument. The satin finish will prevent any accidental audience blindness when you’re on stage, and the arm bevel keeps you playing as easy as breathing. Fit and finish is flawless, the woods spectacular, the guitar on a whole living up to its signature namesake, Mr. Pierre Bensusan.

Dream Guitars is proud to announce our latest partnership! This time with Kevin Caton of Caton Guitars. And to celebrate the occasion, we commissioned his Sullivan model with a multiscale fretboard, Madagascar Rosewood, Italian Spruce, and Kevin’s innovative “Bevel Port” in the upper bout. And to boot, a Ryan-style arm bevel on top. The rosette and segmented back strip come in a custom design of Ebony, Bloodwood, and Buckeye Burl.
With a 3/4” spread, the multiscale fingerboard allows for added sonority and intonation while maintaining a natural and familiar play feel in the left hand; we found this Caton Sullivan takes to Open G particularly sweetly. Thus, this is a fantastic guitar for the fingerstylist who wants to dip into alternate tuning territory, but which holds up well under a flatpick in Standard as well. A powerhouse. This like new, 2018 Redgate Double Top is an absolute powerhouse, with elegance and musicality to match. The trebles have a strong and vigorous profile that really leaps out of the soundhole, but balances sweetly with the rest of the voice. Ziricote back and sides are here paired with a Cedar double top, Spanish Cedar neck, and an intricate mosaic knot rosette. Jim finished the neck and body with glossy Lacquer, and elected to French Polish the top to a maximally thin matte finish to keep the top plate as resonant as possible—a feat he accomplishes handily here. The entire instrument weighs a slim 3lbs 10oz, has a medium thickness U neck profile, and a 12-hole tieblock.

This Buendia Mod D is the sort of guitar that even bad notes sound good.
