2002 Traugott R, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
We love Jeff Traugott’s work. And we love this 2002 Model R in particular. Chocolate dark Brazilian Rosewood paired with German Spruce, glassy playability, and a voice that’s opened up handsomely in the past 17 years. This Traugott has been lovingly played in, and it’s such a joy to hear the resulting clarity and projection. Jeff’s guitars are known for their precision and dynamic range, and this Model R is no exception. It responds handsomely to both fingerstyle and flatpicking, and it really soaks up altered tunings like DADGAD in a way that would be the envy of much bigger guitars.
Simply fantastic, and ready for more.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, brazilain, gotoh, cutaway, calton, fingerpicking

The Slope Shoulder Dreadnought from Santa Cruz is not just for flatpicking. This well-oiled machine is sweetly balanced for a dynamic response and wide range of tones. Built in 2009, our D12 is in excellent condition and boasts impressive Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a European Spruce top. We love playing this one with fingers in open tunings, and the setup is easy on the hands for a multitude of styles. 12 frets to the neck helps warm up the bass response, and the folks at Santa Cruz tuned the top for sweet trebles to balance everything out. Really, a lovely guitar that straddles so many genres—and excels at each, every time.

We’ll let the video and photos speak for themselves this time. Our latest custom OM Cutaway commission from Leo Buendia is a feat of lutherie at the highest level. One piece The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, and Leo’s painstakingly handcarved rosette, endgraft, and headstock inlays come together for incredible elegance, clarity, and balance. A body wedge and short scale make for easy playability, French Polish finish keeps everything as resonant as possible, and the flawless fit and finish make for a perfect instrument.

It’s not easy to build a 12 string that’s as responsive and clear as a 6 string, but that’s precisely what Bill Tippin has managed to pull off. This is an incredible 2009 Bravado with primo Brazilian Rosewood and lake salvaged Sitka Spruce and a Celtic appointment package that humbles the player with its clarity, power, and elegance. Right down to the details (read: Fossilized Buffalo Horn bridge pins) We love Bill’s work, and are always eager to represent it here, but this one caught us by surprise with just how perfectly everything comes together.
The Celtic knot work along the fretboard and headstock are comprised of intricately woven MOP and Abalone, and Bill added a soundport to the upper bout, and a Koa arm bevel to the lower, for creature comfort. All 12 tuners are Black Pearl Waverlies—one set of these tuners is stunning, to say nothing of two! And we love how the ruddy color of the sinker Sitka pairs with the Koa bindings and rich brown Brazilian Rosewood. This Tippin Bravado is ready for travel and the stage, too, with a custom Calton flight case and a Highlander IP-2 dual source mic/UST pickup system.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, 12-string, bravado 12 string, fingerstyle, leo kottke

Our latest Röthel Concert Classical is quick, lively, and a joy to play. This one is still new to the world (built only last year in 2018), and we’re impressed by how much projection and energy it already possesses. CSA Rosewood back and sides with gorgeous chocolate hues, Cedar on top, and a smoothly contoured neck profile that feels full and familiar in the hand. The build quality is fantastic, Jochen makes sure his guitars are as light as possible (this beauty is just over 3lbs!), and that translates into vibrant tone and easy playability. Comes wrapped up in an equally lightweight but protective BAM case.

Mark Blanchard went above and beyond the call of duty, way beyond. Our latest Blanchard Dream Series, number four, is the complete fingerstyle package. Mark’s Sequoia body with its generous 16” lower bout for bass and projection, a body wedge for player comfort (not to mention the Laskin-style arm bevel), multiscale fretboard (26.25-25.25”), EVO frets, soundport, cutaway—every feature you need for an effortless playing experience, no matter what crazy tuning.
Top shelf Brazilian Rosewood from our personal DG stash for the back and sides, and it’s paired with a creamy European Spruce top and Honduran Mahogany neck. We love just how easily this guitar plays from nut to saddle. The multiscale board allowed us to dip down into C territory without getting splashy, and it didn’t matter if we were plucking with fingers or picks: the voice was present, expansive, and enveloping. If there’s a flub note hidden in this Blanchard Dream Series, we haven’t found it yet, but we’ll keep playing just in case. For science. We’ll do other things around the office too. 2005 Beauregard OMC, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
Playing this guitar is bliss. Mario Beauregard is undoubtedly one of the finest luthiers working today for fingerstyle players. His instruments are the trifecta of playability, projection, and clarity. This 2005 OM is all that and more, from the beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and German Spruce top to the glassy setup. Regardless of tuning or attack, fingerstyle or flatpicked, this Beauregard offers up a velvet-rich response. Bass notes are enveloping, and treble overtones hang in the air for long seconds. The tone remains balanced at all times, even if played with an aggressive attack, and pours its sweet honey over your every note. This Beauregard could mean the end of your collection: it’s capable of anything, so why would you ever want to play anything else?

Brand new Kopp L-02, anyone? This beautiful little blues machine features Mahogany back and sides, a torrefied Adirondack Spruce top, and a dark sunburst with tiger stripe pickguard for maximum mojo. We love how easily this L-02 plays; and the baked Adi top gives the voice a crisp and opened up flavor we’d expect from a proper vintage cannon, but here in a shiny new package. The short scale (24.75”) neck lends warmth and bloom, and we loved taking this one down to Open D for some country blues fingerpicking.

In DADGAD or Standard, this Ivanov plays smoothly with the perfect mix of warm bass and cool treble overtones. It’s a fingerstyle machine. Three piece Fiddleback Mahogany for the back is paired with a Swiss Alpine Moonspruce top and Lacewood trim, Dontcho’s carved headstock and polished bridge, and a slim punching weight of 3lbs 13oz to keep you playing effortlessly for longer. Grace, clarity, and definition are the first characteristics that come to mind when playing this 2014 OM from Kim Walker. Individual notes have incredible definition and presence; chords ring out in brilliant acoustic technicolor; balanced across the spectrum. Kim Walker’s guitars are, for us, a gold standard against which to compare other instruments. And of course the materials Kim chose help reinforce that. Top shelf Brazilian Rosewood is paired with a tight-grained Italian Spruce top with a touch of amber color. Abalone appointments (including a flower and vine inlaid at the headstock), Waverly tuners with black pearl knobs. Flawless finish throughout, and a glass-smooth neck to round it out.

A beautiful blast from the past. We’re happy and proud to have landed this Concert Classical from Robert Mattingly, which comes to us all the way from 1967 in Flamed Maple and Spruce. The voice is quick, lively, and immediately rewarding; the evidence of an instrument that’s been played in and opened up completely. At some point in its long life (so far!), this Mattingly was played as a Flamenco guitar, and has twin clear tap plates and nail marks to prove it. We’ve gone over the instrument head to toe and can confirm that it’s in great playing shape, ready for many more years to yet.

A fun blast from the past of Jim Olson’s long career! We recently took in a small body guitar that Jim built back in 1982, one of about two such guitars that Jim modeled after classical designs, but with steel strings. Mahogany back and sides, Spruce top, Florentine cutaway and 25.4 scale, and Jim’s trademark 5-ply neck are all here. This Olson has seen lots of play time over the decades, but is in fine working shape and has a quick and opened up voice to prove it. The smaller body dimensions make for easy playability, but the guitar doesn’t suffer for volume and projection. An opportunity to own a piece of Olson history.

Contemporary fingerstyle meets its perfect companion: our 2016 Greenfield G4.2. Michael Greenfield’s guitars are in the hands of some of our favorite bleeding edge fingerstylists, like Pipo Romero and Andy McKee, and here’s why. Michael’s guitars are exquisitely responsive to a wide range of attacks, they have a cleanness and clarity that allows complex voicings to ring out with the right amount of definition, and they play effortlessly. Figured Mahogany back and sides here paired with Adirondack Spruce.
This particular G4.2 is fully loaded with creature comforts for playability and intonation. The multiscale fretboard is modeled after Andy McKee’s personal G4.2 (26” bass to 25.4” treble), there are twin arm and rib bevels, and Michael’s heel “swoosh” combined with a Florentine cutaway for easy access to the upper dusty frets. This guitar growls, it purrs, it exclaims, it converses. We keep playing different styles on it, and each comes out beautifully.
A instrument like this 2016 Greenfield G4.2 only comes along once in a great while; get this one you still can.Other keywords: greenfield guitars, fingerpicking, dadgad, open tuning, fan fret, fanned fret, altered tuning, evo frets, adriondack, mainstage case
