Wide open and raring to go: our 2006 Henderson OM is a bombshell. Killer projection and sustain, glassy playability, and clear and clean response? Sure enough, you’ll find all that and more tucked under the hood of this Henderson. Fingerpicking or flatpicking, this guitar soaks it all up. And it comes wrapped up in a Calton flight case so you can keep it sweet and safe on those rare moments when you won’t have it in hand.

We’re proud to announce a new partnership with Dion Guitars, which we’ve been working on for some time. And we’re doubly proud to offer our first Dion No. 4 model here with European Birdseye Maple and Italian Spruce. The Honduran Mahogany neck is dyed black and polished to a feather-smooth satin finish that’s remarkable to the touch. High gloss U.V.-cured Polyester elsewhere for style points, and Dion’s crisp fit-n-finish and contrasting light and dark aesthetic come together in a striking visual presentation that manages to feel familiar and new at the same time.
Small soundport in the upper bout gives the player a bit extra in their ear, three-on-a-plate Waverly tuners set off the dyed headstock, and the snug fit of the Visesnut flight case (including case cover) puts one at ease: this Dion is in safe hands. We loved the lively and energetic response. This No. 4 has a crisp attack that’s followed by flush of warm overtones to sweeten up the voice, and there’s just enough bark in the bass to reward your thumb or flatpick when you dig in.
Our very first Dion guitar fits right into whatever situation we threw at it, and it responded with crisp definition and a smoothly dialed in setup. We’d recommend the No. 4 for just about anything.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, birds eye maple, evo frets, flatpick, OM, bolt-on, bolt on

The next best thing to owning a pre-war Martin: the Pre-War Guitar Co. 000-28. This is our first Pre-War in the shop, and we’re excited to announce it’s surpassed all of our expectations, which were pretty high to begin with. Wes Lambe and Ben Maschal have teamed up to produce new guitars with all the airiness, volume, and presence of the rare pre-war Martins—guitars which won’t be locked away in a collection, gathering dust, but played out in musician’s hands where they belong. This 2017 000-28 features Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce with their “new old stock” level of distress, looking minty as a well-loved 80-year-old penny. There’s faint finish checking and some light scratches on the pickguard, as well as a “finish repair” on the lower bout to give it that superb vintage flair. This guitar responds so well to fingertips and flatpicks, we had Allen Shadd do an additional demo to demonstrate how beautifully it plays for Bluegrass and beyond!
We’re impressed, Pre-War Guitar Co., but hardly surprised: this is exactly what a vintage 000-28 is supposed to sound like.Other keywords: lutherie, 000, 28-style, distressed guitar, prewar, pre war, herringbone

From Dream Guitars-owner Paul Heumiller’s personal collection, we’ve got a dynamite Tom Anderson electric in Alder & Quilted Maple. This Drop Top Classic comes to us from 2016 and is in gorgeous shape, with Anderson’s “chocolate Maple” neck, TF1-SF1-TF3 pickups, split shaft tuners, and ohsc straight from Tom. 25.5” scale makes for a crisp and quick attack, and Tom’s neck carve and setup play like butter.

Our 2004 Bourgeois Vintage D has been played in and opened up like nothing else—loud, responsive, and powerful. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with an Adirondack Spruce top in the prewar tradition, with 28-style Herringbone appointments and Waverly tuners. The neck is finished in half satin, and is such a smooth operator in the left hand. That, combined with a setup that’s dialed down from Bluegrass territory, makes for an eminently playable Vintage D, one that we found ourselves drawn to pick up again and again. The previous owner had a Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup system installed that translates all that Bourgeois richness faithfully to the stage—this is a Dreadnought built to be played, and played often.

Pull out every stop, and you’ve got something half as sweet and responsive as this 2007 Bourgeois NAMM Soloist, number eight of nine. Dana and his team spared no detail when building this beauty: Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Italian Spruce top, Waverly tuners, flawless fit-n-finish. Our Soloist is an extremely easy player that loves standard tuning as much as Open D, and we found it responded well to even an aggressive attack. The Soloist/OM shape is comfortable in your arms, and the cutaway gives your left hand carte blanche across the fretboard. We’re happy to report this tone machine hasn’t been lying dormant, collecting dust, since 2007. It’s in great condition, with only a few marks and wear on the neck that come from long hours of making music.
Lively, open, and quick—this Bourgeois Soloist is welcome in our hands anytime.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, brazilain, Summer NAMM, tkl, fingerstyle

A Bill Wise treasure! Our 2013 Charis SJ is a beauty to both the ears and the eyes, with Macassar Ebony back and sides and a rich Redwood top and T’Zalam bindings. 13-fret neck with a 25 inch scale makes for easy playability and a touch extra warmth in the trebles, and the Florentine Cutaway makes sure you can still get all the way to that pesky 20th fret without breaking a sweat. Overall, this Charis can be characterized by a smooth response, and even smoother playability. The string-to-string balance makes for an excellent fingerstyle guitar, and it handles dropped tunings like a champ.

After three years of experimentation and trial and error between Martin Simpson and PRS, the model before you now was born. Cocobolo back and sides paired with a pale Adirondack Spruce top, wider fretboard for fingerstyle finesse, and a 25.25 inch scale for easy playability and added warmth in the mids. This PRS plays smoothly, and the voice is characterized by a roundness and richness that really fills out your fingerstyle arrangements. Taking it down into DADGAD, the Martin Simpson Signature remained clear and defined, and we love how individual notes retained that definition even if played softly.
The PRS Acoustic System is an easy-to-use pickup with a hardwired volume knob just under the lip of the soundhole. Wrapped up in an Ameritage hardshell case, our 2011 Martin Simpson Angelus is protected in fine style for those rare moments when you won’t have the guitar in hand.Other keywords: lutherie, signature guitar, finger style, fingerpicking, cocobolo, adriondack, peruvian mahogany, maple, open d

It’s easy to lose track of time with this one. Jeff Bamburg’s OMB model comes to us as a responsive midsize guitar that soaks up open tunings and keeps the notes crisp and lively with a cantilevered neck and premium tonewoods. Gorgeous Bearclaw Sitka Spruce on top is here paired with Walnut back and sides and Curly Maple bindings, and we found the Walnut lent a dry, woody flavor to the voice that kept the mids and basses from sounding muddy when we went down to Open G. Rather, we found this 2009 OMB articulate and well-defined when we did so. Again, it’s easy to lose track of time with a responsive and engrossing guitar like this Bamburg in your lap. And we can’t think of a better recommendation than that.

It’s hard to put this one down. Our latest brand new OM from Don Musser is a gorgeous example of what happens when you combine a tonewood dealer’s personal collection with their luthier chops: purity, clarity, and strength. Costa Rican Cocobolo back and sides paired with a tight-grain Sitka Spruce top and Honduran Mahogany bindings. Glassy nitro finish, 25 1/2” scale, Brazilian Rosewood bridge—this OM is a sight to see, and that goes double for hearing.
Don’s voiced the top for fingerstyle responsiveness and clarity. The 25.5” scale gives a bit more bite when you drop down into DADGAD and beyond. There’s a great string-to-string balance; the voice doesn’t favor any particular register, letting them all ring out evenly. We’d recommend this Musser OM for, well, everything.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, tone wood, orchestra model, flatpicking, gotoh, tkl

From the late, great Lance McCollum, we’ve got a sweet 2002 Prototype Slope D in The Tree Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce. Lightweight and agile, this McCollum has a very quick response and deliciously crisp trebles. The Tree is such fantastically figured tonewood, it’s always a special treat to see it used on such a lively and exciting guitar, and it pairs nicely here with Adirondack Spruce on top for extra power and drive. Under the hood there’s a K&K Pure Mini pickup (one of our all-time favorites), and this McCollum comes wrapped up in a TKL case for those rare moments when you won’t have it in hand.

In Nigel Forster’s “modern classic” archtop stable, his Charlie model comes to us with carved Maple back and sides, carved European Spruce top, and an innovative “long neck” design that marries electric guitar sustain and playability with the resonance and dynamic range of an acoustic instrument. Here with a handmade Kent Armstrong AlNiCo III Jazz humbucker and old school paper-in-oil capacitor with volume and tone knobs recessed under the Ebony pickguard, compensated zero fret and saddle, and Maple neck, our 2012 Forster Charlie cuts a fine figure, and plays flawlessly and spot on all across the board. The neck is 1.75 inches at the nut, giving the left fingers a bit more room to stretch out, and the Armstrong humbucker is a powerhouse pickup for everything from Jazz to Blues, and even further afield.

Quick response, an energetic and lively tone, and an incredibly lightweight and resonant build make up this 2013 Concert Classical from German luthier Jochen Röthel. Tiger Maple back and sides (with a striking Rosewood center) and Spruce top, and weighing in at a scant 2lbs 12oz, our Röthel plays effortlessly, and with a warm and punchy bass response that really fills out the voice.
French Polished for maximum resonance, with Klause Scheller tuners and a 651mm scale—this 2013 Röthel has an engaging quality that makes it hard to put down, and we love Jochen’s rosette which stands apart from the traditional mosaic crowd with a diamond motif that also makes an appearance on either end of the 12-hole tieblock.Other keywords: classical guitar, fingerstyle, nylon string, nylon-string, classical music, french polish, figured maple
Add to Compare2017 Beardsell 7G-3PU
More fun than we can shake a pick at! This killer 2017 hollowbody 7G-3PU from Al Beardsell is a livewire originally owned by Paul Heumiller himself, who snagged it after seeing it at a show with Al. Mahogany body with a Maple top that boasts striping figure and a cool, mineralized-esque color, and Al whipped up some killer Rickenbacker-style toaster pickups and a trem bridge to round it all out. Gotoh tuners, Cocobolo Rosewood fingerboard, and the volume knob has a blower switch to instantly kick on all pickups, regardless of what position the selector is in—great for when you need a big, juicy blast. Al’s neck carve shaves a bit extra off the bass side to better mate your left hand to the neck, and the result is an effortless playing experience.
