2018 Traugott R, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
We’re excited to offer a like new, 2018 Traugott R in Jeff’s classic Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce combo. This Model R has all the properties that we’ve come to expect from Jeff’s work: unique definition and responsiveness all along the fretboard, glassy playability, and immaculate string-to-string balance that lets the voice ring out in true clarity. All that in a practically new package; already the voice is inspirational, and we can’t imagine how all the ways it’s going to grow and open up in the coming months and years.
The fit and finish are flawless, executed in Jeff’s restrained style for an elegant, understated aesthetic that provides a hint as to the kind of precision and control that the voice will offer up when you put finger to string. This is an excellent opportunity to own an instrument from one of America’s finest luthiers: our 2018 Traugott Model R is money well spent.Other keywords: lutherie, brazilain, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, jeff traugott, hoffee, gotoh, abalone, contemporary guitar, mint

This is the first Big Hollow that’s landed on our doorstep, and we were impressed the moment we tuned it up. This 2015 00 was built with four-piece, quartersawn Macassar Ebony back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top, which lends extra power to the voice. We found this 00 to have a clean, focused sound, and the individual note separation precise and to the point. This small body 12-fretter responds surprisingly well to a flatpick, and is a natural choice for fingerpicking in standard tuning, as well as Open D.
EVO frets mean you won’t have to worry about a fret dress for quite some time to come, and the oil varnish finish has been buffed to a high sheen to keep the instrument as light and resonant as possible (this beauty is a trim 3lbs 14oz). Bloodwood bindings throughout are paired with herringbone appointments and matte gold Rubner tuners. Pyramid bridge for a touch of the traditional, but Bevan’s upper bout curves cut a more contemporary figure that sets this Big Hollow 00 apart from the crowd.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, oo, parlor guitar, adirondack, macasser, ameritage, fingerstyle

Smooth, smooth sailing. Michael Greenfield’s guitars are always a dream come true, and we love this 2010 G2 in African Blackwood and German Spruce. Liquid trebles, well-balanced bass register, pianistic response all along the fretboard—an excellent companion for fingerstyle or picks, and altered tunings feel right at home thanks to the 25 3/4” scale length. Michael added an arm bevel for creature comfort, and a heel “swoosh” carve to help the left hand get around the neck to those pesky upper frets, and rang in the soundhole with a Paua Abalone and Spalted Maple rosette that sets off the German Spruce top with style.
This beauty is as easy on the eyes as it is the hands: the setup is all glass, and the high gloss finish shines just the same. This Greenfield G2 is the complete package.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, florentine cutaway, karura, gotoh, c neck, pinless bridge, fingerpicking

A beautifully preserved piece of history sits in your lap, and what else could you want? It’s one of the only of its kind, bedecked with pearl and brass and rosewood, Figured Maple back and sides, Spruce top—the 1945 Stromberg Ultra Deluxe. Grover sta-tite tuners, original pickguard, and wrapped up in the original velvet-lined hardshell case, this is an all-original example of one of the early-to-mid 1900s archtop builders work at the peak of their powers.
Elmer Stromberg worked to keep his instruments in the hands of players during the Great Depression fo the 1930s, and during this time evolved his archtops to better compete with a full orchestra by widening the lower bout to a full 17 3/8”, enhancing the volume of this Ultra Deluxe and lending an extra cutting ‘oomph’ to the trebles. The slim neck and narrow nut (1 11/16”) make for a deft left-hand work, and the setup is in a tasty sweet spot for both solos and rhythm.
It is an inspiration just to see an all-original vintage instrument of such rare provenance in person, but this Stromberg follows up that with the seasoned voice of a well-preserved and eminently playable piece of history.Other keywords: jazz, arch top, flatpick, jazz guitar, birdseye maple, mop, f holes, f-holes

Definition, power, and playability—we don’t know how Michael Kennedy builds such energetic guitars, but we’re sure glad he does. This is our latest Indian Hill Grand Concert in Mahogany and Engelmann Spruce, with a few extra features under the hood. Namely, a small upper bout soyndport to keep the player in the know, and the installation of a tornavoz around the inside of the soundhole.
This GC is a particularly lively and loud guitar, exhibiting all the woody, dry characteristics of Mahogany that make for a quick and responsive instrument. Played with either flatpicks or fingertips, this Indian Hill is immensely fun; it’s easy to lose track of time. The back and sides and neck are finished in satin, and your left hand slides oh so smoothly along the neck. It’s really one of those guitars that practically plays itself. The pinless bridge makes for quick string changes and eliminates the risk of launching a bridge pin off the top and into your audience—set off with spalted appointments here and the rosette.
Brand new but already a livewire tone machine! Our latest Indian Hill GC is a hearthrob you won’t want to miss.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, canadian, fingerstyle, dadgad, alternate tunings, gotoh

The latest 457 from Klein & Kauffman has arrived—and it’s not one we’ll soon forget. The brand new “Blanca” 457 in English Sycamore and Engelmann Spruce is a force of nature. The lower bout measures in at 18 inches (even though the total weight is a slim 4lbs 7oz), and the expansive Engelmann top is tuned for instant response, even with a light touch. Played with flatpicks or fingertips, we could only find bright, balanced notes and easy-on-the-ears string separation, and Kauffman’s dialed in the setup on this Blanca to be nice and easy on the hands.
Here you’ll find Holly bindings, integrated Ivoroid nut, and Klein’s hallmark bridge with individual saddles. The sharp headstock angle maintains a consistent break angle for the strings for extra clarity and projection, and the whole package comes wrapped up in a custom Ameritage hardshell case that fits snug and secure.Other keywords: steve klein, steve kauffman, fingerstyle, carbon fiber, gotoh

We love it when a parlor size guitar strikes it rich! This 2015 Micheletti Peregrine packs an expansive voice into a trim package that’s characterized by round trebles, lots of color and dynamism in the bass, and a lively responsiveness that can quickly fill the room if you’re not careful. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (seriously gorgeous example of this rarest of tonewoods), Adirondack Spruce on top for extra stiffness and power, and then luthier Rick Micheletti finished it off with a 12-fret neck to warm up those trebles for a round, fat sound.
The Peregrine is trimmed out in Abalone from head to toe, and features individual saddles for each string, so dialing in your perfect setup is easy as pie. This Micheletti comes wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, and is more than ready to go anywhere, at any time. Here’s an additional demo with our own Al Petteway: https://youtu.be/43NY3I2JsR0

At first touch, the Petros sings. We instantly fell in love when this 2014 Celt Fingerstyle came through the door. Macassar Ebony back and sides with strong inking similar to Ziricote, creamy Italian Spruce on top, and everywhere you look Bruce and Matt’s Celtic knot motif ties it all together. A natural choice for DADGAD, we also found this Petros Celt to hold its own back up in Standard tuning, and on down to C# too. The voice has a smooth, glassy top end that goes down easy, and we love how consistently this Petros responds across the fretboard. The overtones are clear and present, haunting.

Michi Matsuda—a category all of his own. This man blends the disciplines of sculpture and lutherie with a contemporary artist’s eye for contour and color in ways that the rest of us are only just now catching on to. This M1 was originally built for one of our clients in 2005, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to revisit with an old friend. Suspicions have now been confirmed: even 13 years later, Michi’s guitars are gorgeous, timeless, and incredibly resonant.
Rich, red Brazilian Rosewood make up the back and sides, and there’s a tight-grained Italian Spruce on top with a little bit of aged toner in the finish which pairs nicely with the Spalted Maple rosette, waist, and florentine cutaway inlays. Twin koi fish are inlaid in Abalone from frets five to nine, and just after the scalloped nut there’s a final touch of Spalted Maple veneered to the headstock with gold Gotoh 510 tuners and Ebony knobs. The bridge is Rosewood, as are the bindings, and the heelblock features Matsuda’s swoop relief carved into the treble side to coax your left hand a bit closer to the fretboard when playing the uppermost frets.
There’s absolute magic in the naked strings. The treble response is haunting, replete with overtones and palpable sustain. Notes from this M1 hang in the air like a cloud. It’s rare to find a guitar which really feels as comfortable with picks as it does with fingers, but this Matsuda is one such guitar. How Michi manages to coax so much color and dynamism out of his guitars, we’ll probably never know—but we’re glad he does.

A 2002 Kim Walker SJ in Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce—need we say more? Kim’s guitars need no introduction, but we can’t help but gush about this one. Heaps of headroom, a bass response you feel all the way in your gut, and yet a voice balanced for fingerstyle, or flat picking, or anything in between. A beautifully inlaid Abalone flower adorns the headstock with a touch of elegance, and the Sitka Spruce top has dramatic bearclaw figure to complete the portrait.
An incredible instrument; it’s an orchestra wrapped up in six strings. We’d recommend taking this one down to DADGAD or beyond (check out the video below where Clive Carroll takes the bess E all the way down to B!) for an experience in baritone growl with standard play feel. The Walker’s rich, dynamic response, regardless of tuning, will keep you playing for long hours. Guitars of this calibre come onto the used market but rarely, and the proof is in the pudding: you won’t want to let this one go.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, waverly, bearclaw sitka, jumbo

What happens when you put one of the world’s foremost acoustic flatpickers and a present day grand master of American guitar building in the same room? A little something like the Tony Rice signature model from Santa Cruz Guitar Company. Richard Hoover and Tony Rice began collaborating on a guitar for Tony as early as 1978, and by 1989 the Tony Rice model was born: Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, 25.4″ scale, 1 11/16″ nut.
Santa Cruz later split the model into two versions, the Tony Rice and Tony Rice Pro, but this original from 1989 has matching specs to the upgraded version. The top has tinted to a sexy amber, and after nearly 30 years of music tucked away between its braces this SCGC Tony Rice is fully opened up and packs a wallop (or two) across the registers. Solo lead work in the style of this guitar’s namesake sound crisp and clear, with a punchy fundamental, and various chord voicings for accompaniment sound rich but articulate all across the fretboard–intonation is top-notch. We’ve just brought this piece of Bluegrass glory back to peak playing condition, too, so it’s ready to keep making music for another 30 years at least! The saddle has lots of height, and the setup is dialed in like a machinist’s caliper. Interested? Give us a ring!

Our latest banjo from Weaverville native Bob Anderson is a gorgeous example of vintage tone with modern feel. Bob pulled a vintage Tubaphone pot from his extensive collection and paired it with a fresh Maple neck he carved with a smooth V profile and dyed a dark, cherry red. Snail inlays along the fretboard are hand etched in painstaking detail by Bob, and you’ll find an intricate star inlaid into the headstock with the same level of precision. 5 Star tuners, Guardian hardshell case, and a fresh head with Ebony-and-Maple bridge dialed in for an easy playing setup—what more could you ask for?

Cannon, anyone? We rarely find a guitar that delivers so completely. This 2016 Pellerin Jumbo is a sheer force of nature: huge voice, sustain, note-for-note clarity, and style. We had to set a timer whenever we sat down to play this beast, or we’d completely lose track of time and there goes the day! It handles flatpicks like it born to be strummed, but when you bring your fingerstyle chops to bear this Pellerin does anything but disappoint.

It’s easy to get lost in this one. Gerald Sheppard upgraded this Grand Concert with his cream-of-the-crop Ave Maria package in Snakewood appointments, arm (and rib, and cutaway) bevels, Select Blue Paua inlays. Higuerilla back and sides is here paired with a gorgeous Sinker Redwood top for a comprehensively chocolate appearance that sets this Sheppard apart from the crowd. Tonally, this GC is a smooth talker. Excellent note separation, glassy and balanced trebles, an extra helping of sustain. Like we said, it’s easy to lose track of time with this Sheppard, it’s such a breeze to play and responds exactly how we need it to, regardless if we’re playing softly or with grit.

2002 is right in the middle of when Martin was building this most limited of runs, the OM-45 GE 1933, and that’s right where this guitar came from. The Golden Era guitars preceded Martin’s Authentic line, and were built with the cream of the crop Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, braced like the 30s prewar Martins, and here outfitted with 45-style appointments and a shade top. It’s obvious at the first pluck of a note that this OM-45 GE has a special brand of tone. Excellent string balance, with the uppers clear and present without dominating the voice. Excels in both Standard and D tunings. Plays easily, hangs in the air an extra moment or two, and it looks like a dream come true.
