2014 Preston Thompson 000-BRA 12-Fret, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Ah, a 000 that’s not afraid of a pick. This powerhouse 12-fretter from Preston Thompson comes to us with striking Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, and 25.4” scale for power and drive—two attributes this 2014 000 has in spades.
We loved to put this one through its paces on flatpicked fiddle tunes à la Norman Blake or Julian Lage, where the bass and mids really warmed up the voice before tuning down to Open D for a spin with fingertips. There we weren’t disappointed, either: played lightly, the Thompson 000-BRA has a sweet and mellow response.
The combination of a 12-fret body join and 25.4” scale makes for a dynamic 000 that’s at home in a variety of settings; this Thompson won’t collect dust in its case.Other keywords: PKT, brazilain, 000-12, 12 fret, fingerstyle, superior, waverly, herringbone

This 2016 Bourgeois “Whyte Rabbit” has a voice that’s equal parts clarity, warmth, and sparkle—not to mention its blazing white aesthetic. When Dana was approached to build an all-white guitar, he took to the idea with gusto. Result: the semi-transparent Whyte Rabbit L-DBO before you now, based off of the limited run of Bourgeois L-DBO Presentation models (see here for the last one we sold: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/2016-bourgeois-l-dbo-presentation-le-9-of-10-ziricote-adirondack-spruce-007563.html). If you were at the 2017 Winter NAMM show, odds are you spotted this snowy gem at the Bourgeois booth!
Figured Maple back and sides are paired with an Aged Tone Adirondack Top, Maple bridge, and MOP-and-Abalone encrusted fretboard for a dazzling effect. The previous owner outfitted this handsome powerhouse with an L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup (which sounds rich and acoustic, by the way), and upgraded the case to a custom-fit Hoffee number in black and green.
We love the voice of this Whyte Rabbit. A delicious balance between richness and crisp definition, this Bourgeois is a fantastic fingerpicking guitar, and it soaks up open tunings particularly well.

A guitar for the long haul: our 2008 Brondel A2 in Sapele and Spruce. This gorgeous piece of lutherie fits the 14-fret 000 niche to a T with a dynamic response, crisp bass, and an affinity to fingerpicked open tunings just as much as flatpicking fiddle tunes in standard. The C neck features a well-rounded carve, the body is bound in Tortoloid, and Laurent’s fit and finish is so clean it’s almost surgical. We’re very impressed by how consistent the sound is, regardless of what style we played in. The top is very energetic, and has some fierce projection that’s tapped with even a light attack.
It’s rare to find a guitar that’s so versatile, but this 2008 Brondel A2 is just that. A great choice for whatever genre suits your fancy today, and tomorrow.

It’s not every day that a D-45 strolls into the shop like this one. Built in 1983 to commemorate Martin’s 150th anniversary, this D-45 was outfitted with straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, with a Sitka Spruce top and MOP hexagonal 45-style fretboard inlays. The V neck has just been reset by our very own repair team, so we’re happy to report the setup on this D-45 is superb; it plays especially easily. The voice has opened up sweetly over the past 35 years, with a warm bass and clean treble response. The Sitka top has scalloped, rear-shifted bracing, and inside you’ll find a label commemorating the occasion of the 150th anniversary signed by Chris Martin IV himself.

If it’s good enough for Bill Coulter, you can bet it’s good enough for us. We’ve just got in a lovely 2016 Santa Cruz OMG, straight from Mr. Coulter himself, with gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a Bearclaw Moonspruce top. Richard Hoover’s biggie-sized OM model, the OM Grand, boasts a 16 inch lower bout for added volume and sustain, and here assembled with such fine tonewoods the effect is capacious and energetic, with sustain to spare.
This OMG soaks up DADGAD like bread to butter, but makes out handsomely in Standard tuning as well. A wide fingerboard and soft V neck make for uncramped lefthand work, and the addition of a Venetian Cutaway helps keep those uppermost frets dust free. This Santa Cruz really pushes sound out and away from the body, meaning that your audience gets a lot of music in brilliant clarity. William’s been gigging this OMG with a K&K Pure Mini pickup, and we’re happy to report that it sounds sweet and faithful to the acoustic voice. All wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, this powerhouse Santa Cruz is ready to go the distance, and do it in high style.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, scgc, orchestra model, fingerstyle, celtic, herringbone, waverly

Here’s one to write home about. An incredible example of Kim Walker’s work, this 2004 SJ in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce is just about perfect. Rich, enveloping bass notes balanced against clear treble strings like bells, with an articulate and even-keeled midrange to span the gap. With a 15 7/8” lower bout and 25.4” scale, this Kim Walker has lots of projection for when you need it, but the top is voiced for even a delicate attack to bring out lots of color and musicality. Kim finished this one with a thin varnish finish that keeps the tonewoods as vibrant and resonant as possible—and it shows. Lots of headroom, and the setup is glassy to boot. Playing this Kim Walker SJ is an experience of original inspiration. Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, abalone, maple, waverly, inlay, cedar creek

We’d take this Kim Walker 000 over an ice cream sundae any day of the week—twice as sweet and no risk for cavities. Looking about as pretty as a fresh-minted penny but played in like a 50s silver dollar, this handsomely opened up slice of traditional taste from Kim is a dyed-in-the-wool home wrecker to your current collection. Aged Sitka Spruce top, light caramel-stained Mahogany back and sides, and a dark tortoise-style pickguard with bits of Spruce peaking up through the clear bands in the guard.
The 12-fret neck carve is generously curved in the C persuasion, and the Waverly tuners operate like the well-greased machines they are. While yes, this 12-fret Style C is from 1999, it’s in superb condition with but the faintest of fret wear, great playing action, and heaps of meat left in the saddle. Kim Walker’s guitars almost never crop up on the used market, so when’s the next time you’re like to see a piece of Mahogany and Sitka juicy tone to spare like this? So are you interested yet in the intersection between treble bells and woody bark, a dash of 12-fret richness and a propensity for open tunings? Congratulations: you have arrived at your destination. Don’t forget to breathe when you play this guitar; we don’t want anyone fainting on account of our little ole’ Kim Walker 000.

Juicy, fat, a full-bodied beauty: our like-new 2018 Greenfield G2 is a force of nature. Malaysian Blackwood back and sides, Alpine Moonspruce top, twin arm & rib bevels plus a Florentine cutaway—and that’s just for starters. Michael also installed his DADGAD multiscale board (26.125” to 25.4”), Baljak tuners, his “swoosh” heel, and Spalted rosette to tie it all together. And this beautiful package comes wrapped up in a Mainstage flight case to boot.
There’s some serious meat on these bones: the bass response is rich and enveloping, and those treble strings almost have a life of their own. The note-for-note balance is superb; somehow Michael manages to make individual notes juicy and larger-than-life, but clearly defined relative to adjacent ones. Loud and clear, indeed.
This 2018 Greenfield G2 is in a category all of its own.

The folks with Kenny Hill have been building crossover guitars for a number of years now, and a few years back they launched their custom Performance Crossover line—and they’ve never looked back. This particular example comes from 2016, is in great shape with Indian Rosewood back and sides, and boasts an impressive double top of layered Engelmann-Nomex-Red Cedar for projection and sustain. A short, 640mm scale and 1 7/8” nut make for easy playability, and the addition of twin soundports flanking the heel help the player keep in touch with their tone while performing. You’ll find the neck has more of a C-shaped profile than the traditional D of a Concert Classical, and it’s especially easy on the left hand. The overall weight is a slim 3lbs 8oz, and the radiuses fretboard helps make this Performance Crossover feel like a steel string guitar, but with the sensitivity and color of a nylon string instrument.

The first Michaud to walk through our door feels like an old friend sliding back into town. This 2013 00-R “Interrupted” feels intimate and familiar in your hands, and responds easily to both strummed and fingerstyle approaches. Striking red Cocobolo back and sides, Lutz Spruce on top, and a 25 inch scale for warmth and easy playability. Trim punching weight of 4lbs 2oz, Wenge trim and Schertler tuners, and all of this wrapped up in an Ameritage case for safe keeping.
The voice has a focused quality that projects notes directly outward from the soundhole, rendering arrangements with added clarity and definition. The bass response has a touch of added warmth that mellows the overall balance of the instrument. When combined with this Michaud’s added focus and clarity, the effect is a warm tone that’s bounded by crisp definition—a combination that easily stands out.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, cocobolo rosewood, nitrocellulose lacquer, 14-fret

Our latest Concert Classical from Thomas Rein comes to us in high style, with forest-grown Indian Rosewood and a tight-grained Red Cedar top. The Rosewood was processed in Germany in the 1960s before it was sold to Joseph Wallo in Arlington, Virginia, who then sold it to Rein in the 1990s when he closed up shop. Accordingly, this brand of Indian Rosewood proceeds the era of plantation-grown Rosewood, and as a result of having been “wild” harvested, it looks (and sounds) quite different from the Indian Rosewood found predominantly in the guitar world today.
The resonance and clarity of this Classical are delightful, especially for a brand new guitar. Extra warmth in the bass and miss fleshes out the voice, and the treble strings provide a crisp flavor to the top end. The Cedar top is French Polished for maximum resonance, and the rest of the instrument is finished in Catalyzed Urethane for durability. Ringing in the soundhole is a custom mosaic rosette, and Tom added premium Gotoh tuners to the headstock for a touch of smooth-operating elegance. The Spanish Cedar neck has a full, D profile that’s glass-smooth—as is the setup on top—and everything comes wrapped up in a TKL hardshell case for safe keeping.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, classical guitar, nylon string, nylon-string, fingerstyle

Fingerstyle comes in many packages from big to small, but there’s a niche in the in between that really sings. Michael Greenfield’s G3 model is right there in the middle with a 13-fret neck and a 14 5/8” lower bout: slim for comfort, but built for big tone. To that end, Michael added a Laskin-style arm bevel to this 2008 G3, and put a 25” scale length together with a 1 7/8” nut for a wide, easy-playing fretboard perfect for fingerpicking goodness. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Lutz Spruce on top, and Michael’s preferred Honduran Mahogany neck for stability and sustain. This G3 feels solid in your hands.
It’s very energetic and lively, even under a light attack. The trebles cut particularly well through the mix, without overpowering. The roomy string spacing makes quick work of complex chords to prevent your fingers from stumbling onto each other. This Greenfield responds well for a variety of styles, and it loves to ring out with sustained notes; they keep hanging for quite a while.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, carbon graphite, tone halo, calton case, gotoh 510, hide glue, papa heart abalone, spalted maple

Our favorite guitars are those which fill us with childlike wonder. When a guitar makes you forget about the outside world, when you’re relaxed and excited simultaneously at the possibilities waiting along the fretboard beneath your fingers. Playing this brand new Kraut Mod D, it’s like breathing. Ray’s neck profile is slim, the setup glassy, and the 25.25” scale has a touch of added warmth in the lower mids to fill out the voice. From treble to bass, frets one to 20, this Kraut sings and rings like a piano. We love the consistent response across all the registers. There are no dead notes, no wolf tones, just smooth definition and clarity.
Madagascar Rosewood makes up the back and sides, as well as the fretboard and headstock veneer, and is paired with a pale Swiss Moonspruce top with Maple trim and Ray’s hallmark segmented Burl rosette. This guitar only weighs 4lbs 6oz, and projects each note easily at a light touch, and can also handle a more aggressive attack with aplomb.
A guitar like this is a form of inspiration that we don’t want to part with, sustained acoustic expression. Our brand new Kraut Mod D is a guitar with an immense amount to give.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, somogyi, fingerstyle, alessi, visesnut, dadgad, modified dreadnought, modified dreadnaught, fingerpicking, MD

The folks at Martin have brought another historic gem back to new life with a limited run of recreated Martins from the turn of the twentieth century. This is their 00-45S 1902 model, built in 2003 to match exactly the specs of one of four 45-style prototypes built in 1902 (the 45 didn’t come onto the scene until 1904). Thus, this beautiful 00 has Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, and the Abalone trim and appointments we’ve all come to expect from a 45-style Martin—except this prototype also features an integrated pickguard between the bridge and soundhole in the style of Martin mandolin pickguards of the time.
This particular example, number nine of 100, is in wonderful condition. The voice is revelatory, with a dark and colorful bass response that’s rare to find in such a small body. The treble strings are well tuned to balance that darkness with a sweet top end and overtone response. This 00-45S has a peculiar way of drawing your ear down the soundhole as you play; it’s engrossing and hard to put down.
Wrapped up in a coffin hardshell case in true 1900s fashion, this 2003 Martin 00-45S is ready to be the centerpiece of your collection, and the first guitar you reach for when inspiration comes calling.Other keywords: parlor guitar, martin guitars, brazilain, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, abalone, waverly, slot head, 12-fret, 12 fret

This is a new one for us: a 2018 Concert Classical from Charalampos Koumridis with Smallman-inspired lattice bracing. With Bocote back and sides and a Red Cedar top, this Koumridis is incredibly responsive; the bass is characterized by smoothness and an enveloping quality that blends seamlessly with the other registers. True to Greg Smallman’s build philosophy, this Koumridis is solidly built with a heavy frame, which allows the top plate to vibrate as freely as possible for projection and sustain. Additionally, the added weight means the guitar stays right in your lap: no chasing this one around.
Creature comforts include a Stallman-style armrest, elevated fingerboard, and glass-smooth Alessi tuners. Hiscox Pro II case, French Polish finish, and a lovely vine-themed mosaic rosette.
