New Ribbecke Master Series Dreadnought, Honduran Walnut/Western Red Cedar
Our latest Halfling from the Ribbecke Master Series comes with an inspiration from the Dreadnought guitar for added bass and punch, not to mention projection. Dubbed “Whisper Gray” for the translucent finish on the Red Cedar top, this Ribbecke has Honduran Walnut back and sides (renowned for its density), Tom’s asymmetrical carved Halfling top and bracing, and a B-Band UST pickup system. Compared to the other Master Series guitars we’ve had in, this one has an extra heaping dose of woody punch that shows up especially in the mids, and a sweetly dialed in string-to-string balance that feels at home for both flatpicked runs and fingerstyle arrangements.
The neck is finished in satin, and feels smooth and personal the moment you take a hold. Standard 25.4” scale with a 1.75” nut and a 12.5’ fretboard radius, bone nut and saddle, and a thin, removable Ebony pickguard round out the portrait of the Gray Whisper: smooth operator, put together, elegant at a glance and at a touch.Other keywords: arched top, arch top, jazz, archtop, tom ribbecke, gotoh, reunion blues, lutherie, luthier, dreadnaught, strumming

Well, well, well: Small sized guitar realizes big box ambitions. This 2013 Claxton Malabar has great depth and resonance, clean and easy trebles, and a well-balanced midrange that ties it all together. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Italian Spruce on top, Mahogany neck, Ebony bindings; Ed’s eye for fine wood hasn’t led him astray yet. And a Calton flight case for safe keeping!
The voice is characterized by clarity and sustain, with a full-throated projection that we’d expect from a guitar with a few more square inches across its top. With light gauge strings we were able to tune down to C# and still have enough string tension to play comfortably and intonate properly, and we imagine you could substitute a heavier low E string to go all the way into C tuning territory.
We see heaps of builders who want a full-size voice to come out of their smaller guitars—but the handful who achieve this feat is slim, and Ed Claxton is right there at the top. We can’t recommend this Malabar highly enough.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, handbuilt, brazilain, gotoh, fingerstyle, parlor, small-bodied, flightcase, 13-fret, 13 fret

If your billfold can’t stomach a prewar OM-28, try this 2015 OM-28 Authentic 1931 on for size—built spec-for-spec after the quintessential version. Here with Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, scalloped bracing, and a forward-shifted X, the OM-28 Authentic is a testament to the classic Martin sound we’ve all grown up on. This one’s got the playability of a new guitar and the voice of a much older beast: focused trebles, a clear and open middle register, consistent sustain and balance.
This particular example has been well-cared for, with hardly a mark to be found. The guitar feels lightweight and responsive in your hands, be it fingerpicked or strummed. This Martin OM-28 Authentic is a powerhouse, plain and simple.Other keywords: lutherie, orchestra model, OM 28, 28 style, 28-style, herringbone, harptone, waverly, vts s

Noemi brings a fresh aesthetic to the Parlor shape with this lovely brand new number in Cocobolo and Italian Spruce. 12-fret neck with a full 25.4” scale fretboard makes for warm mids and snappy trebles, and Noemi balances the weight of the neck and the body against each other such that this Parlor sits comfortably in the player’s lap. You don’t have to fight this one to stay put! Which dovetails nicely with a glassy setup that’s easy on the hands, making this Noemi the sort of guitar you can easily lose track of time with. Wrapped up in a Hiscox case, this Parlor is safe and sound when it’s not in your hands (but we predict you won’t be putting this Noemi away too often).

A sweet blend of darkness and clarity, liquid trebles and articulate midrange, glassy playability—these are the first things you’ll notice when you pick up this 2007 Petros Grand Concert. This is a fingerstylist’s dream machine, with a wide fretboard and clean note separation, and it’s ready to take onstage with an L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and the lovely sunburst that spans the top was installed by none other than Bill Tippin himself!
This Petros will handle a wide range of tunings, but it’s also right at home in regular ole’ Standard, and it even takes to a flatpick well. We see a lot of guitars that try and split the difference between fingertips and picks, and we see a lot of guitars fail to satisfy either category. This Petros is not such an instrument; played softly or digging in with a pick, the voice remains clear and focused, with a touch of darkness in the bass response to really fill out chords. Plus this beauty comes wrapped up in a Hoffee flight case, so you can rest easy when it’s safely cocooned between performances.
A fantastic guitar that can be whatever you need it to be, when you need it: our 2007 Petros Grand Concert is a lifetime of music waiting for you.Other keywords: bruce petros, matt petros, lutherie, luthier, shade top, fingerpicking, finger picking, adirondack, brazilain, gc

Each guitar case is specially padded and equipped with built-in adjustable support belt to ensure stabilization of the guitar inside the case (please read and follow the product instructions for adjustment of the support belt). Each Visesnut case features an adjustable support developed and patented worldwide by Visesnut. This includes a built-in support belt, protective padding, and neck support cushion. The built-in support belt is adjustable to embrace and hold securely many different guitar body shapes and sizes, allowing one Visesnut case to give the excellent effect of custom-fitting more than one guitar. The interior padding is lined with a well-selected soft and smooth material. The padding has the ability to memorize shape. Together with the support belt and the neck support cushion, it helps to ensure firm support resulting in the least possible movement of the guitar inside the case. Once the support belt is adjusted to fit a guitar, the size and shape details of the guitar are memorized by the padding material at that time, and the supporting means is always ready to be adjusted for another particular guitar for the next use. The material, however, recovers its shape, if the support belt is readjusted to carry different guitars. The case body has a double-walled structure for enhanced protection.
It is designed to withstand certain stress loads and absorb impact from drops and shocks. The double-walled structure also acts as an insulation that minimizes the effect of sudden temperature changes on the guitar by decelerating the transfer of temperature into the case.
Leather Handle Every Visesnut case comes with a sturdy handle, handcrafted with genuine leather for flexibility and durability. High-Quality Accessories High-quality stainless steel and metal accessories to complement all Visesnut cases. Part of their value is never to compromise for anything less than fine workmanship. Well-Balanced Standing Positions Although designed for horizontal access, all Visesnut cases are well balanced to stand firmly in both horizontal or vertical positions.
Optional padded cover is available to specifically fit Visesnut Dreadnought size cases.

Here’s a treat you don’t often see: one of Jason and Pharis Romero’s wood-bodied reso guitars. Figured Maple with a dark stain for the body and neck, a National brass coverplate and cone, custom brass tailpiece with “Romero” on the side, and a slotted headstock for vintage flair. The J. Romero Wood-Bodied Resonator spins function into fashion by leaving the screws of the brass fingerboard extension exposed, and gold Gotoh tuners matched with gold EVO frets.
The biscuit cone bridge and wood body lend a delicious darkness to the tone, which is contrasted to the cool, bell-like timbre of the treble strings. This is a resonator guitar that you can play softly and still get an enveloping, articulate tone. We found the setup teased into the sweet spot between fingerstyle and slide, adding to the dynamism this J. Romero reso is capable of.
It’s a breeze to play, with a voice for smooth pieces and rousing blues: we adore this 2015 Romero Resonator.Other keywords: banjo, j romero, resonator guitar, reso-phonic, slide guitar, guitar slide, blues guitar

They don’t build ‘em like this anymore. Literally. Gary Southwell no longer builds with Brazilian Rosewood, and not only does this A Series boast one of the last sets of Brazilian he’s ever used, but it also features an exquisitely tight-grained German Spruce top given to Gary by none other than Julien Bream. This is Gary’s 250th guitar, built in 2008 and featuring the distinct headstock and Rodgers tuner arrangement of his A Series, as well as engraved bone appointments, an arm rest, and Florentine Cutaway.
The Maple neck has a slim profile that’s easy on the hands, and thanks to the cutaway and elevated fingerboard, all the frets are quickly beneath your fingertips. The bass response has an extra helping of clarity and definition to really let those bass notes stand out in the mix, without overpowering the other registers. Gary’s custom Rodgers tuners glide effortlessly, and the overall lightweight build (only 3lbs 12oz) and slim neck make for an exercise in easy playability. In short, this Southwell A Series excels on both fronts, ergonomic and tonal. And there won’t be any more quite like it from Gary.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, anniversary guitar, commemorative guitar, nylon string, classical music

We love to see a Ryan with some years under its belt. This 2001 Mission Grand Concert doesn’t disappoint! Only a few shallow love bites here to let you know this Ryan hasn’t been wasting away in its case. The voice is lively and responsive, with more dry mids than you would usually find on a Cedar-topped guitar, and that gives this particular Mission a defined response that holds up well to both fingertips and flatpicks. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides, venetian cutaway, and Kevin’s 25.7” fingerstyle scale length. 18 years strong and counting, this is a sweet slice of the Ryan & Dream Guitars life.

An all-original Gibson Les Paul goldtop from 1956. Need we say more? One of the most iconic electric guitars of all time, and this example is a breeze to play and more fun than we could hope to describe. Our repair shop has gone over it in painstaking detail to verify that everything is in tip-top and original shape—and everything lines up except the high e saddle adjustment screw. The P-90s roar, and all the hardware and electronics work like a charm.

Add to Compare2016 Bourgeois L-DBO Presentation LE 9 of 10, Ziricote/Adirondack Spruce
Simply delicious. We’re here to offer one of the most painstaking examples of Bourgeois craftsmanship in this 2016 L-DBO Presentation model. Number nine of an exclusive ten, this is the only guitar in the collection with Ziricote and Aged Tone Adirondack Spruce, an exciting blend of classic and contemporary tonewoods, and you’ll find that the rest of the instrument has been done up in high style with a rich bounty of Abalone and Pearl. The Ebony fretboard is almost completely covered with Pearl blocks, themselves inlaid with floral Abalone patterns; a motif you will also find on the wings of the bridge and the heelcap. Antique Walrus Ivory pins, Waverly tuners, and a tiger stripe pickguard for a flash of something off the menu.
A dark and moody sunburst spans the top, which sets off the Abalone trim, and the fact that this Bourgeois comes in a custom fit Hoffee flight case lets us know that this guitar will be safe for the long haul. In spite of this guitar’s trim dimensions, there is a fierce and lively quality to the L-DBO Presentation’s voice that gives the impression of a larger instrument. Instead of a plunky picker, we found real power and dynamism.
It’s an incredible find, to have an instrument whose gorgeous aesthetic is only matched by its voice. We cannot recommend this exclusive Bourgeois L-DBO Presentation more highly.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, 9/10, 9 of 10, waverlies, age tone top, torrefied top, torrefication, brazilian rosewood, dana bourgeois

What a powerhouse! Even our guy who doesn’t like parlor guitars fell in love with this 2017 00 from Maxime Baron. This is a fantastically energetic box that packs away a lot more bass than you’d expect, and it plays as easy as breathing. Sitka Spruce on top, nice and tight-grained, Wenge on the back and sides (and fretboard, bindings, bridge, and headstock veneer), and a sweet 25 inch scale to warm up the trebles and give a touch of sweetness to the livewire voice.
Have we mentioned how much fun we had with this Baron 00? It’s such a lively guitar we couldn’t resist trying out flatpicking tunes as well as fingerpicking blues, and others. The Baron performs handsomely in each application, and really likes it when you dig in. Kevin Ryan’s Paradiso model offers, in one instrument, both the warmth and color of a smaller bodied guitar and the attack and projection of a larger one. We’ve got an excellent example of that balance in this 2014 Paradiso in Cocobolo and master grade Sitka Spruce. Fabulous fit and finish from tailblock to tuners, with Titanium bridge pins, Kevin’s acoustic flutes arm bevel and 25.7” scale—this Paradiso is a smooth operator under your hands.
The lower bout is a trim 15 1/4”, and with a Florentine Cutaway and slim neck profile you’ll find this Ryan to practically play itself. We in particular appreciate the smoothness of the response, and this Paradiso’s ability to remain crisp and articulate even when we dipped down into C tuning territory. Really, we were hard pressed to find note we didn’t like!Other keywords: finger style, fingerpicking, tkl, paridiso

This is one of Caleb Smith’s most recent builds from 2017, D-28 #58 in Brazilian Rosewood and 350-year-old Adirondack Spruce. Some of our all-time favorite luthiers are also full-tilt performing musicians, and there’s an obvious connection between the virtuosity of plucking notes and of shaping wood. This is a handsome 28-style Dreadnought with a quick V neck, 1 11/16” nut, and seriously ancient Adirondack Spruce on top for that extra ounce of awesome.
Now, the voice is something else entirely. This is not your average honkin’ Dread. This Caleb Smith has a smooth, expressive, and very musical tonality that renders notes in full technicolor glory. The trebles and middle register are particularly crisp and present; perfect for giving solos and lead work a bit more sizzle to stand out from the crowd. Gold EVO frets will ensure you won’t need a fret dress any time soon (even though you’ll be putting serious hours on this guitar in no time), and we guarantee that this guitar, as incredible as it sounds now, will continue to open up even more over time.
Caleb’s reputation is sterling, and we’re excited to be able to offer this 2017 beauty to all of you. Get it while it’s hot!Other keywords: dreadnaught, balsam range, flat picking, flatpicking, bluegrass, traditional guitar, herringbone, waverly, waverlies

Our very first instrument from Baron Guitars come to the party dressed in black and with a voice that cuts right through the riff raff. Here decked out with Flamed Maple back and sides and an Italian Spruce top, we found the voice had an easy balance across the registers, but cut very well through the mix. The treble response is crisp and well-defined, and the bass and midrange response are characterized by a dry woodiness that keeps the tone articulate and straight-to-the-point with clean attack and swift decay.
A gorgeous matte black finish on the body is set off by Maple appointments, from the top trim, rosette, and bridge, to the Maple neck and fretboard itself. Gold EVO frets for longevity. The neck is also finished in satin, and offers zero resistance to the left hand while fretting, and it remained so even after we turned up the heat with some faster tunes.
Quick and lively, this 2018 Baron OM is the right choice if energy and attack are at the top of your list.Other keyword: lutherie, luthier, canada, flame maple, matt finish, gotoh, hiscox, finger picking, fingerpicking, finger style, flat picking, orchestra model
