2003 Eichelbaum GC Brazilian/Adirondack
We were just marveling at the consistency of these Eichelbaum’s, and here’s another fine instrument from David’s shop. Once again he strikes a wonderful balance between classically elegant aesthetics, first-rate playability, and a large but well balanced sound. You could play just about any style on this guitar and its lovely quartersawn Brazilian rosewood and Adirondack red spruce would give you something nice in return.

This is a Goodall Grand Concert Cutaway with all the Goodall shimmer but a bit warmer sounding as well. It very well balanced and clear, as are most Goodalls, but there’s a little something extra in this one. Al pointed it out to me after he recorded it, he feels it’s a special one. The rosewood and spruce body offers up a great fingerstyle voice and this one also strums great. It’s in mint condition with an AKG microphone added for amplification.

The first thing that hits you about this James Goodall Grand Concert is that it’s drop-dead gorgeous. The triple-A koa practically pulsates, the reds hues in the mahogany neck complement the koa perfectly, and the curly maple binding adds just the right contrast. While this one has all the crispness and sparkle that the Goodall brand suggests, there’s a pleasant warmth in the midrange as well. This is versatile instrument that will reward its owner for years to come.

Its Brazilian rosewood and European spruce combination will reward the fingerstylist with warmth, the strummer with rich overtones and good sparkle, and the soloist with an emphatic midrange. It’s power emanates largely from the bottom and mids, and its wide dynamic range invites you tease it softly or dig in as hard as you need to.

Greven nailed it when he named this one the J-35 “New Vintage.” Its deep, toasty sunburst and warm and inviting vibe bring to mind an old friend’s Gibson that I seriously coveted back in the sixties. Its mahogany back and sides pair with an Adirondack red spruce top to produce excellent balance, cut, and response. The mids and trebles are rich and throaty enough to hold your own in a crowd, and the bass wonderfully articulate.

The owner of this guitar is donating 30% of the sale price to the McCollum Family Fund for the benefit of the family of luthier Lance McCollum. This Maingard GC has a gorgeous dramatic set of Brazilian and Marc’s wonderful rosette inspired by his homeland of South Africa. This one has a very fundamental voice with less overtones so it’s well-suited for blues and rags and such. It likes to bit hit hard so strong players will enjoy it. Since it is sans bevels it is quite reasonable for a Maingard as well.

To our ears, this Kenneth Hill sings with a contemporary American voice. The bass range is clear and articulate and the mids are slightly more pronounced than on some instruments in its class. Its spruce top responds vigorously when projection is needed, yet it is capable of balance, nuance, and sensitivity. Its double top gives this instrument surprising volume, with particularly fat upper mids and trebles. Playability is first rate.

This Somogyi has one of the most amazing sets of Brazilian we’ve seen from Ervin. The figure is almost like a stack of feathers and the color is deep and rich. It’s topped with European Spruce and dressed in Ervin’s famous segmented rosette and linear abalone fingerboard inlays. The voice is huge and can morph to handle a wide variety of styles. While writing this we played fingerstyle, single line Jazz and flatpick tunes and they all sounded right at home. The big, juicy treble strings make melodies jump across the room and the bass is much bigger than you expect from an OM. The midrange is rich and complex but very articulate with a clear fundamental note. A masterpiece from the Somogyi shop.
