Holy smokes, the holy grail amp. A Dumble Overdrive Special from the 1980s that’s been well-cared for and maintained. This cabinet was built by Doug Stalters in Poplar with proper dovetails, and with two modifications: laser engraving the face plate to the original design, and to change the layout by moving the master volume to the front and replacing the mini blade switches with mini toggles. The latter of which is something that Dumble himself has been using since the 90s. The chassis is engraved as a 50w Overdrive Special; but this in fact a 100w model. Additionally, you’ll find a built-in Dumbleator tube-buffered effects loop. This, combined with a master volume knob, are rare finds on a Dumble.

This 2005 Staccato in Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce has all the warmth and grand tone of an OM but in a much smaller, easier-to-hold package. The voice of this little gem truly is special, full and clear with a focus on uniformity of tone from string to string. A natural choice for fingerstyle, and with the larger Forte body style this one is also right at home with a flatpick as well. One of those rare guitars that makes everything sound just a bit better. Creature comforts include an arm bevel, contoured heel carve, soundport, and Scheller tuners. Aesthetic dressings include the wildly figured Tree Mahogany, African Blackwood bindings and engraft, and tasteful Abalone inlays throughout.

The lutherie community suffered a great loss with the passing of Taku Sakashta. We’re grateful for the opportunity to host one of his flattops here in the shop today. Taku built this OM in 2007 with dramatic Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, European Spruce on top, and several Sakashta-specific features from the scroll cutaway to the raised headstock logo. The voice is characterized by a focused, directional quality that feels immediate and defined. Additional features include doubled sides, a segmented MOP rosette with Maple purflings, and engraved MOP snowflakes position markers.

Michi Matsuda steals our heart yet again with this guitar. Madagascar Rosewood figured like a landscape; Swiss Moonspruce on top with interrupted purflings and Abalone, Wenge blocks; delicately carved heel and bridge–these are the marks of a master’s work. Each M1 is a unique offering to the world, and this example from 2020 is a particularly inviting piece. Michi voices this instrument for each register to fit together perfectly like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, painting a complete portrait that is complex, yet in harmony with itself at the same time. The voice on this M1 is inviting, peaceful, oh so smooth.
