2018 Heinonen SJ, Quilted Sapele/Cedar
It’s a rare day when we get to spend it with one of Drew Heinonen’s guitars. This SJ comes to us from 2018 with fantastically Figured Sapele back and sides (The Tree devotees take note), Cedar on top, and the Olson-inspired Abalone dove inlays and multi-laminated neck. Slender profile for an agile lefthand feel, and a light buildweight to boot. This particular wood combination balances a crisp fundamental with just enough warm overtones to make for a voice that’s complex, but has good motion and separation across the registers. The bass in particular has a sweet blooming quality when big chords are left to ring out.

Where to begin? This 1934 Martin 000-28 has stood the test of time in mores ways that one. We love seeing a guitar of vintage such as this come through the shop, particularly when it shows wear in all the right places. It sounds amazing now and frankly appears to have always sounded so. 89 years has really allowed this instrument to open up, the tight grain of the Adirondack Spruce, and the uniformity of the Brazilian Rosewood almost give away the incredible timbre of this instrument. This is the OG of fingerstyle guitars and when you pick this up it is obvious as to why greats such as Eric Clapton, John Mayer, and so many others have made this their signature acoustic. What more could anyone want in a vintage acoustic guitar.

Here we have a 2016 electrified rarity from the one and only Jordan McConnell, who we’ve enjoyed an exclusive relationship with for years. This electric semi-hollow is loaded with Bare Knuckle Pickups, PAF-style humbuckers called “The Mule.” These pickups offer truly insane range of tonal possibilities, from a sweet chime, to a monstrous growl. At full volume these pickups will push any amp to the brink of saturation. Immensely Hi-Fi, these PAF-style humbuckers can handle any sonic task. Also featured, Jordan McConnell’s signature neck profile–a nut width of 1 3/4″ feels like an acoustic, yet screams like a Les Paul. The Semi-hollow body adds a layer of complexity and warmth. Elegantly comfortable to play with both arm and rib bevels. Indian Rosewood back and sides, paired with a Sitka Spruce top. This guitar’s aesthetic is as unique and diverse as its musical timbre. Casimi guitars are synonymous with words such as excellence, superb craftsmanship, and high art. So much so that the name Casimi is a superlative in and of itself. This C1S is no exception. Masterful in every sense of the word. The motif of the Phoenix informs the aesthetic of this instrument, from some of the most beautiful Koa we have ever laid eyes on to the pale Moonspruce top. While we have come to expect excellence from the duo of Matthew Rice and Matthias Roux, there are some firsts here for us with this build. It features a frailing scoop, adorned with an 18 karat gold phoenix feather. Directly below the scoop you will notice there is no cutaway. This instrument is truly singular and superlative.

We’ve been waiting eagerly for this one to arrive, and now that it’s here we’re seriously conflicted about selling it–we want to keep this one ourselves. Davide Serracini has built guitars for exacting musicians like CandyRat’s Luca Stricagnoli, among others, and here he’s applied that attention to detail for a slim L 0013 Fan Fret model that manages to play intimately and sing vigorously at the same time. It’s fantastic. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides pairs with Italian Spruce top, a 25.6-25″ multiscale setup and 13-fret neck join, subtle cutaway and heel contour, and gold EVO frets. An excellent option for the fingerstyle player who moves through numerous styles and tunings and wants one guitar to keep up with them every step of the way–and all of that in a smaller, oh-so-easily-playing package.

This 00 from Julian Gaffney is small but mighty. With the energy of a much larger instrument, and the comfort of a much smaller one; this is liable to leave your jaw hanging open. Julian has gone the whole nine yards in his training, starting at Bryan Galloup‘s school, then with Rudy’s Music and later working with Roger Sadowski, before apprenticing with fingerstyle godfather Ervin Somogyi for several years. The pedigree is strong, and his instruments are the sweet fruits of all those years. What a sweet fruit this guitar is, gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides, with a European Spruce top– Dyed burl appointments throughout, astounding inlay work covering the entire body. Such exquisite detail from the burled endgraft, meticulously carved bridge to the perfectly beveled headstock. In one word this guitar is MAGIC.

Here we have a 12-fret small body guitar with the look and feel of a classic fingerstyle guitar but the makeup of something more. Panamanian Rosewood with EVO Frets are not apart of your grandpa’s flattop. This guitar feels right at home with travis picking, flatpicking, you name it. On the other hand it leaves nothing desired for the more modern picker. This instrument does it all, it’s comfortable, dynamic and so enthralling. Hard to put it down.

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of Stefan Sobell‘s here at Dream Guitars, and this 2010 New World model is proof positive as to why. Help wanted: this Pederson EVA-UM is having a serious impact on productivity in the office, and needs to find a new home. It is simply too distracting to our staff by the strength of its projection and the clarity across its strings, not to mention its eye-popping good looks. It’s not hard to guess why the Acoustic Guitar Forum voted this the 2016 Guitar Model of the Year.
Claro Walnut back and sides paired with a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top, all married to an adjustable neck joint, Florentine Cutaway, and offset soundhole, is the complete package for everything from flatpicked fiddle tunes in standard to fingerstyle soundings from the depths of altered tunings. Kevin Pederson’s striking inlays lance across the back of the neck and ring the offset soundhole in an contemporary asymmetrical mosaic. 20 sparkling EVO gold frets across the fretboard for maximum fret longevity, and both an arm bevel for your right hand and a bevelled Florentine Cutaway for your left. Pederson’s pinless bridge and offset soundhole help maximize the top’s resonance (obvious after the first strum, Kevin’s voicing technique is dialed in for articulate bass and juicy trebles).
All wrapped up in an Ameritage case and set up to play like butter from mama’s kitchen: the 2016 Pederson EVA-UM.
