2013 Martin HD-28, Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Herringbone, anyone? We’ve landed a lovely HD-28 from 2013 that’s wide awake and itching for attention! Straight-grain Indian Rosewood back and sides paired up with Sitka Spruce on top with a herringbone top border and white bindings, Martin’s Low Profile shape on a Mahogany neck, and a frankly buttery setup that’s easy on the hands—what more could you want? This is a proper workhorse for flatpicking and strumming, hardly a mark on it, but with a few years’ opening up already under its belt.

The D-18 is a classic for a reason—Martin’s flagship Dreadnought dressed up in Mahogany and Sitka Spruce is a hallmark of American music, and at home in so many other scenes. Here we’ve taken in a like new D-18 from 2014 that’s wide awake and ready for action. The setup is easy on the hands, especially for a Dread, with Martin’s Low Oval neck profile and high performance taper. The Mahogany body here has all the dry push that we love, and Sitka Spruce on top carries that dryness with a powerful projection and great dynamic range.

Here’s a custom client build that we wish we’d commissioned for ourselves to keep! We worked with Gage Halland to spec out this DC-H to handle a range of tunings (thanks, multiscale) with the same powerful attack and crisp definition (thanks, Wenge & Moonspruce). Twin arm and rib bevels for creature comfort, plus the ubiquitous florentine cutaway. Brand new, and already such a monster. The voice is wide, wide open.

Woah. This is a monster of a guitar; Stefan nailed it with this Model 1 from 1998. Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce with a 16 3/8” lower bout and domed back/top! Very energetic, with a quick and lively response. This Sobell is a fingerstyle force to be reckoned with, a natural choice for DADGAD or C9—but Standard holds its own just fine as well. This one has seen some action since its 1998 birthdate, and it’s got a supremely opened up voice to prove it. Our repair staff went over it tuner to tail and we’re happy to give it a clean bill of health. Ready for more!

2011 saw Gibson offer an exclusive run of Historic 1959 Reissue Les Pauls boasting hand selected materials and hardware by the Custom Shop. These LPs are powerhouses. Figured Maple top with Washed Cherry finish over Mahogany body and neck, plus a TonePros bridge and tailpiece with deep studs, ’57-recreated humbuckers, and the ’59 neck profile that’s smooth, round, and fantastically effortless in hand. These special Burstbuckers can really rip when you lean in, but can also offer a buttery, round flavor depending on attack. The two volume, two tone knob arrangement plus three-way switch will feel immediately familiar, as will the solid build weight (under 8lbs; slim for an LP). Those four knobs are all push-pulls, too (bass tone: Phase Reversal, neck tone: kill switch, bass volume: split bridge, neck volume: split neck). This beauty comes wrapped in the original Gibson case, and comes with an uninstalled pickguard and COA.

We love the amazing array of reissues that Gibson has offered over the years, and we especially love those that come out of their Nashville Custom Shop. Enter this well-oiled machine, a Nashville ’63 ES-335 Block Reissue from 2013 with hardly a mark on it. Laminated Maple body with solid Maple center block and one-piece Mahogany neck; custom with a variation of the Burstbucker similar to the Live Bucker of the LPRO and LPR9 , but with lower output at the neck and more in the bridge with differential winding; aluminum stopbar tailpiece; Pearloid block inlays. The neck is the slim-n-slick profile of the early ‘60s that feels effortless in hand, and the setup on this one fits the sweet spot for both light and more aggressive attacks. The 335 semi-hollow design is a classic that is equally at home in so many different styles, it’s no wonder these guitars continue to be so popular. Additionally, this beauty comes out of the Nashville shop, where Gibson’s tight build quality is held to even higher standards—the Nashvilles are consistently top notch, and this 2013 ES-335 Reissue is no exception.

Well-cared for, this 2014 Authentic is in great playing shape with only a few marks, and is more than ready to get down to the business of making music.

In 2014 Gibson collaborates with founding member of the Black Crowes, Rich Robinson, on an exclusive run of 500 ES-335s, a nail-for-nail recreation of Robinson’s ’63 ES-335 which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (and later painstakingly restored). This beauty is wrapped up with period correct faded Cherry finish from Gibson’s VOS process, Burstbucker pickups (#1 at the neck and a hotter #2 at the bridge), and a nod to the original’s “Custom Made” plate covering stopbar stud holes. Small block inlays on a Rosewood fingerboard, plus a beefy Bigsby vibrato, round out the looks. These Burstbuckers are sweet and juicy, and are infinitely adaptable to a wide range of genres; the Maple semi-hollow body also adds sustain, color, and feedback resistance. This Rich Robinson Signature has all the mojo we’d expect from a true ’63—plus the playability of a like new, well-oiled machine.

Take up this 2016 Lowden S-50, and get ready to lose track of time. The S body features a slim, 14 3/4” lower bout for a warm and focused tone, which is further enhanced by African Blackwood back and sides (one of our favorite tonewoods) and Sinker Redwood (reclaimed from the Mendocino Valley in our own California) on top, both master grade. The GL Standard neck profile is one of our favorite setups for fingerstyle, where this S-50 really likes to live. This one draws you in; there’s a glassy quality to the trebles that’s particularly haunting, and fills out the voice.
