This guitar truly captures the classic bluegrass ideal of a “cannon”—it has everything you’re looking for, and it has it in abundance. One of those rare instruments that simply speaks for itself.

Brand New Altman F5LS, Maple/Adirondack Spruce
Altman just dropped off this brand new MF5 LS (Lloyd Series). Red Spruce top over Figured Maple body (ditto for the neck), all finished in varnish for a velvety, hand-rubbed feel in hand. 1 3/32″ nut and a hard V profile makes for an easy and familiar experience for the left hand. Setup is also easy peasy. We got our own Drew Matulich to put it through its paces, and we’re sure glad we did–he let’s this Altman MF5LS sing out! Sixteen years old at the time of publication, this 2009 Ziricote and Cedar SJ from Brian Applegate is a beast—full of power, clarity, and precision. It has everything one could love about the pairing of Cedar and a glassy set of Ziricote for the back and sides. An earlier example from Brian, it’s had plenty of time to open up and has been exceptionally well cared for.
With a 25.4″ scale, 1 3/4″ nut, and 2 1/4″ saddle spacing, it features classic fingerstyle specs and delivers that rich, sonorous tone we associate with fine Cedar-topped guitars. It’s also equipped with a K&K Trinity pickup system (preamp not included).

Such a delight to visit with this beauty. Michael Bashkin builds premium grade modern fingerstyle instruments, just like this 2017 SJ with Myrtlewood back and sides plus Italian Spruce on top.The voice is characterized by clarity, balance, and smoothness, equally at home in Standard tuning as it is in DADGAD and some C tunings (thanks to the 26-25.4″ multiscale fingerboard). Frets are dressed with semi-hemispherical fret ends, making for a very smooth playing experience under your fingertips. At the headstock you’ll find a delicate inlay scheme with micro purflings looping across the headplate veneer and between the Waverly tuners. All of this comes wrapped in a Hoffee flight case with an added layer of Thinsulate for maximum protection.

1999 Blanchard Classical, Indian Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
Here we have another example of Mark Blanchard’s work from the ’90s — this time, a 1999 classical in Indian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce. A slimmer neck profile makes this a great “crossover-ish” instrument for steel-string players.
1999 was still fairly early in Mark’s career, but we’re already seeing the beginnings of design elements that remain present in his builds to this day. For instance, the rosette: it features Honduran Rosewood surrounding a band of abalone. Honduran Rosewood appointments appear throughout this piece.

Mark Blanchard’s Bristlecone is one of those models that always feels comfortable, and always sounds great. This 2008 Bristlecone is no less than any of that! Carpathian Spruce top with Mahogany back and sides offers a crisp voice with great transparancy and clarity across the registers; ergonomics include a venetian cutaway and a Manzer body wedge. A K&K Pure Mini pickup has been installed (sounds fantastic), ditto for gold EVO frets and a strap button.
