Dake Traphagen continues to be one of our favorite modern classical builders in the States. With works of functional art like this 2021 build in hand, how could we not? Gorgeously dark Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, warm Red Cedar on top, slightly elevated fingerboard with a subtle, 20” radius, 20th fret extension with Evo fretwire to boot. Two MOP wheels are inlaid into the Mammoth Ivory tieblock, adding some elegant spice to the dark, warm color palette present elsewhere in the build. Gold Scheller tuners set into Dake’s understated headstock shape set it all off.

In our experience, it’s difficult for a builder to thread the needle and build both nylon string and steel string guitars with equal skill. Mario Beauregard, for one, manages to make it look easy: this nylon string crossover is just as resonant and responsive as his steels. This beauty comes to us from 2008 with a carved Indian Rosewood back—similar to what John Buscarino does with his Cabaret crossovers—and a Cedar top with an elevated fingerboard and bent top profile in the upper bout to allow for easier access to the entire fingerboard, all the way to the 20th fret extension. With a slightly radiused fretboard and cutaway, this Nylon Jazz crossover becomes effortlessly playable. The carved back design creates a bigger air cavity without making the instrument actually feel bigger, the result being added power, projection, and bass response. Coupled here with Cedar on top for warmth and sweetness. When you want to go electric, the installed K&K Pure Mini pickup can take you there with a wonderfully faithful amplification of the aforementioned qualities of sweetness and response. Alessi tuners and a carved headstock veneer, plus Koa rosette, complete the picture of a perfect crossover.

Here we have a terrific Clark concert classical in Curly Maple and Cedar. Jeremy Clark studied for several years under renowned guitar builder, Sergei De Jonge, before setting up his own workshop in Montreal, Quebec. Powerful projection, clear note distinction, and string balance are hallmarks of Jeremy’s work, and this beauty has those attributes in spades. Jeremy also embraces technology in his instruments — an elevated fingerboard and soundport are modern techniques he’s used here aimed at getting the absolute maximum tonal response from the instrument.

Among the highest of Alhambra’s catalog: the Mengual y Margarit NT model. Built by Javier and José, respectively, in an exclusive small shop within Alhambra, these guitars feature thicker sides for added sustain, allowing the top to be thinned for added volume and power. Here in Indian Rosewood and Cedar, with a Torres-style bracing pattern, and French Polish on top to maximize resonance! Additionally, this beauty features the Ahlambra ErgoNeck, engineered with a slight asymmetry in order to be as easy-playing as possible. This particular beauty is like new from 2020.

This is the first piece of Ariel Ameijenda’s to be featured at our shop, and we’re already impressed. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides are paired with a German Spruce top, French Polished throughout for maximum resonance, and a slim 3lbs 10oz playing weight. The trebles are characterized by a smooth, round flavor that pairs up well with the mids and bass. 650mm scale on a Spanish Cedar neck, and dependable Gotoh tuners round it all out. The neck profile comes in at a rounded U, and feels slightly slender in our hands; the setup is superb.

We know why you visit our site and our showroom at Dream Guitars: because we have the best, most unique, original guitars anywhere. Because we are good friends with many of the amazing builders we represent, and connect players with their favorite luthiers to achieve something beautiful together, like this guitar. Brian Applegate and Paul Heumiller have known each other for some time, so when Paul approached Brian with a unique request from a customer, Brian was unfazed. In fact, Mr. Applegate dove headfirst into the challenge of building this fan-fretted nylon string guitar with a low C string and an elongated scale of 26 7/8″ on the low E and 25 5/8″ on the high. As if that wasn’t enough to make a lesser luthier run away in fear, Brian decided to add an arm bevel to the lower bout, a soundport to the upper, and a five-piece neck of Mahogany, Rosewood, and Maple to the already herculean task presented to him. This is his first seven-string nylon string guitar–and folks, it’s a success.
Applegate’s attention to detail is preponderous: observe how smoothly the Rosewood bindings hug the curve of the arm bevel, fading into a thin line before returning to their regular width for the rest of the body. Follow the interlocking lines of his rosette, a series of geometrical shapes traced around the soundhole in perfect symmetry, or the elegant grace of the Yellow Cedar top as the upper bout and Venetian Cutaway tuck in toward that dark rosette, before sweeping outward across the lower bout and Applegate’s understated Brazilian Rosewood bridge, offset to accomodate that great low C string. And the Cocobolo back and sides! Can you find another set so brilliantly figured? Applegate is a master of the craft–and we’d expect no less from a former pupil of luthier legend James Olson.
Of course, all these beautiful examples of fine woodworking are heart-stirring, but they pale in comparison to the grand, orchestral, absorbing tone of this guitar. The multiscale design allows for an amazingly articulate low-end (that low C string sings a somber and resonant song), and articulation across all the registers is crystal clear. The middle and upper registers exhibit smooth separation, and there’s more sustain than a room of slack-jawed onlookers will know what to do with–and trust us, wherever this guitar goes, people will stare. Applegate’s maestro techniques have yielded a guitar which, surrounded by unique and irreplacable guitars such as only Dream Guitars has, still manages to stand alone, a truly singular instrument.

Brian Applegate presented this guitar at the Newport/Miami Guitar Festival. It caught our eye immediately with it’s enticing Myrtlewood body full of golden tan and brown colors. It’s topped with Engelmann Spruce prized by luthiers for it’s rich, warm tone. The headstock is adorned with striking Amboyna and the etched tie block is beautiful cut from bone. Brian makes some of the prettiest rosettes around and this one features interlacing bloodwood diamonds set into the Spruce top. The combination of Myrtlewood and Engelmann Spruce makes for a lush, full voice with great projection. This is a loud guitar with very lyrical trebles that just long to carry the melody. It has 50mm nut and slimmer neck profile that will appeal to players of many nylon styles. This is a superb Concert Guitar from Brian Applegate.
