2010 Brondel A1-C, Malaysian Blackwood/German Spruce
What a powerhouse we have here in this 2010 A-1c by Laurent Brondel. Dressed in Malaysian Blackwood and German Spruce—Laurent’s guitars never disappoint and this is no exception. What is exceptional about this instrument however is the bracing. Loaded with a laminated “Larson-style” bracing–this guitar is built for power. It goes without saying there is plenty of headroom here, deep bass as well as strong and sparkling trebles. This dreadnought-sized cutaway is comfortable in hand. Roomy and spacious in both feel and sound. Laurent’s signature arched, rather than domed, top and back certainly contribute to this sense of comfort. As well as the warm and natural aesthetic, this Brondel A-1c feels like home.

To borrow an overused expression, this guitar is an inspiration. Leo Buendia is one of our all-time favorite builders, one who we’ve been very fortunate to work with for a number of years now–and no surprise, his instruments continue to humble and delight us every time. This is the first time we’ve had one of his slim 00 models, and we pray that it is not the last. Excellent dynamic range, gorgeously appointed, and outfitted with some of the finals materials on the scene. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with dramatic figuring and coloration, pairing with Swiss Moonspruce on top and a series of flawlessly executed chip carvings at the rosette, endgraft, and even the headplate. It’s a fearsome amount of work for just one of these carvings, let alone three. The entire instrument is finished in matte that feels gossamer to the touch, and makes the grain of the wood pop. Additional features include custom Rodgers tuners with reconstituted malachite buttons, a first for us, offset position markers and Leo’s “stick” style, and even a Brazilian Rosewood bridge. This heirloom instrument was built in 2021, and is essentially new.

Bastien Burlot has been a staple of French lutherie for years, having built guitars for such giants as Thomas Viloteau and the late Roland Dyens, cultivating a unique voice that combines the power and presence of modern styles with the warmth and elegance of tradition for a simultaneously fresh, and timeless, flavor. Recently, Burlot launched a new project that ties these two ideas even more snugly: the Alkemia Series. These Classicals are inspired by the most famous cathedrals in France, with the first in this series being the Alkemia Chartres Cathedral (found about an hour outside of Paris). The tightly patterned mosaic rosette is modeled directly after the stained glass windows of the church, and inside the guitar the label features a labyrinth in homage to the floor of the cathedral’s nave. Here pilgrims have gathered for hundreds of years to walk the labyrinth in contemplation.

Kevin Caton’s Carolina model packs a wallop. With a 16 inch lower bout, this Carolina has lots of real estate for tone generation, which the Macassar Ebony body and Carpathian Spruce top take immediate advantage of. Great headroom allows for a heavier attack, with a strong fundamental in the bass register and some sparkling overtones on the top end. Kevin’s asymmetrical upper bout design allows for easy fingerboard access without compromising the amount of air the body can move, and looks fresh and modern to boot. When you factor in the geometric motifs at the endgraft, rosette, heelcap, and headplate, this Caton Carolina stands out from the crowd in all the right ways.
