The epitome of modern lutherie, this 2018 OM from Isaac Jang, made of Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, being 6 years old at the time of publication, has allowed for some excellent opening up of the Adirondack. Featuring all the qualities we know and love from Isaac’s work, including the Uchida-style bendaway, it offers not only a sleek aesthetic but also easy access to the fingerboard extension. We recently lost Michael Keller, and the luthier community feels that loss keenly. So we’re delighted to have this 2014 Dreadnought in the shop to honor his memory and find a new home for it. Eight years old and waking up very nicely, the voice is open and expressive with great note separation. As a result, it’s at home with fingerpicking as well as of course flatpicking. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair with Adirondack Spruce on top, Abalone trim and snowflakes/diamonds position markers–and Michael upgraded this Dread with a soundport in the upper bout side. This has the effect of giving the player a bit more “me in the monitor,” making it easier to hear your tone when playing with those pesky other musicians in the group. When you want to go electric, the installed Fishman Matrix Natural pickup will take you there.

Snakewood appointments throughout, plus a custom and stunningly executed inlay design along the fingerboard and headplate, makes for a striking aesthetic–and these qualities of beauty are echoed in the voice as well. Great punch, clarity, and power, all at the same time coming from a small-bodied design. Frankly, we don’t know how Keisuke pulls it off.

This Klein M43 from 1997 offers a subtle glimpse into what Klein & Kauffman guitars are renowned for today. This variation features an offset soundhole, which creates an even more unique sonic soundscape with this instrument. Wielding it feels powerful; hearing it is moving, and looking at it encompasses both of those experiences. The Maple back and sides exhibit extreme chatoyance, reminiscent of looking into the bottom of a swimming pool in summer. The spruce top has aged just as finely in sound as it has in hue. But enough of us gushing over this—listen to the sample and watch the video for yourself. Brace yourself.

You’ll notice that there is something funky about this particular instrument, funky? Fungal? Ah yes, there are beautiful abalone mushrooms filling in the fingerboard and headplate. This is such a unique and singular piece that it made its way into the book “The Guitar” by Nick Freeth and Charles Alexander. These guitars are beloved by many famous wielders of the axe! This solid body guitar is constructed of Bubinga, and its heft doesn’t lie solely in its timbre, however, the ergonomic design of Klein’s electric guitars provides this guitar with a sense of stability not often felt in electric guitars. Very much a, “Look Ma! No Hands!” scenario. This guitar is nearly effortless to play. To top it all off, we are selling this guitar for guitarist, composer and fearless improvisor–Henry Kaiser. Taking this 2018 457 for a spin, and you lose track of time right out of the gate. This big boy fills your lap and vibrates your chest at first strum, and quickly sets the room to vibrating with the force of its voice. This 457 is a fantastic example of the expansive, enveloping, sonorous Klein sound—with some top shelf upgrades to set it apart. Mouth-watering gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (chocolate-dark and black ink lines) with Spruce on top and a multiscale setup oof 26 1/4” on the bass and 25 1/8” on the treble. Moreover, the neck, bridge, and fingerboard are all also Brazilian Rosewood—this neck is a special rarity, and adds smooth sustain to the midrange that really helps fills out the voice. The expansive 18” lower bout loves, loves, loves to tune down to altered tuning territory (Cadd9) is a particular sweet spot.

Here we have an incredibly sweet OMC from Ray Kraut. A former apprentice of Ervin Somogyi, which shows in this instrument. Decked out with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and a European Spruce on top. This guitar has both classic and modern aesthetics balanced perfectly– which translates through the voice as well. Touting a deconstructed rosette that is subtle yet captivating. The look and sound of this instrument speaks for itself. Delicately balanced yet rich with haunting overtones and bloom that leave you wanting more and more. This fine guitar is a fingerstyle players paradise.

This guitar! Where do we even begin? This 2018 OM from Ray Kraut is astounding to both the eyes and the ears. A beauty, features Ray’s “Pale Moon” Ebony for the back and sides, and a pale set of European Spruce for the top. Not content with that already deadly combination, Ray then fashioned the headstock veneers, fretboard, bridge, and heelcap out of more Pale Moon. An abstract rosette completes the luthier’s portrait. Tonally, this OM pours out notes with such presence and definition, it takes fingerstyle arrangements and renders them in crystalline clarity.
The trebles have a faint blooming effect after the initial attack, and the string-to-string balance is superb. We had a lot of fun playing around in open tunings—the playability is likewise slinky and smooth. Just an incredible instrument across the board, and it comes with a Hoffee flight case to keep it safe and sound.
So much wow factor here, you’ll need to take two breaths.

It’s not easy to make a new name for yourself in the archtop, electric world, but we think Tyler Wells of LHT Guitars has what it takes. This 2020 Rose Burl Fugue is nothing short of a work of functional art. Curvaceous yet comfortable, stands apart from the crowd yet at the same time approachable and familiar. This guitar feels effortless in hand, from the multiscale setup (24.7-25.7”) to the lightweight build and cutaway ergonomics. The neck and body are perfectly balanced to play off your leg when seated, and Tyler’s handsomely executed single bass offset soundhole broadcasts cleanly straight into the player’s ear. Acoustically, the Fugue has impressive presence and range, and would record very well on that level alone. When amplified with a Parallelogram Kent Armstrong humbucker (volume and tone under the Burl pickguard), the tone rolls out fat and round with fingers, and responds beautifully with added crispness and punch under a flatpick attack.
The body is Flame Maple, here paired with a carved Sitka Spruce top and a 4-piece Flame Maple neck with carbon fiber reinforcement. Black ABS bindings, and Bodega Bay driftwood burl appointments throughout give this Fugue its “Burl” designation (with a gorgeous, gorgeous red Nitro burst for the “Rose”).
The LHT Fugue is what successful modern lutherie looks like: pushing the envelope without forgetting its roots, exploring contemporary aesthetics with an eye for ease of play and an ear for dynamics.Other keywords: kent parker, arched top, jazz guitar, fan fret, fanned fret, 3007, ska, flamed maple, duane simpson

Says Red Molly to James, ‘Well, that’s a fine motor…guitar.’ This is a guitar, not a motorcycle, but a mighty fine one indeed. You know, for it to bear the name Richard Thompson, it’s bound to be quite a delightful instrument. From Lowden, we have a 2014 Richard Thompson Signature, also an F model. This Irish beast is decked out in AAAA-Red Cedar and Figured Ziricote. What a sonorous combination this is. All of the George Lowden features you know and love are here, very well-loved and cared for, and ready for years and years of more music-making.

George Lowden’s S body is petite, and offers an easy playing experience. It also affords an immediacy and intimacy to the voice that’s particularly present in this 2021 S-50. Such a unique sound. With Cocobolo and “Driftwood” Sinker Cedar on top, this one looks gorgeous as well—and these woods also help fill out the voice and add even more warmth and power to the overtones. The short, 24 3/4” scale is very easy on the hands, and adds roundness to the trebles. This Lowden is not one to let slip away; you won’t want to let go.
