2009 Chubbuck Rogue, Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Kevin Chubbuck has been on the scene for a number of years now after working with both the Santa Cruz Guitar Company and our own Bill Tippin. This Rogue model was originally built for our shop in 2009, and now it’s come back to find it’s next home! Indian Rosewood body with Koa appointments; Waverly tuners; “slipping” purflings at the rosette, back strip, and fingerboard. On top, a special treat: “Grey Ghost” Sitka Spruce harvested from a standing dead tree in Washington State by John Wagner. This top is full of silky medullary rays indicating it is perfectly quarter sawn and special. You can hear it also as it blends with the Rosewood body to create a clear, articulate voice. We are proud to be able not visit with this Chubbuck again—it’s opened up handsomely in the intervening years, and it’s ready for more action.

If ever there was a guitar for both fingerstylists and flatpickers, this guitar is it. Kevin Chubbuck’s years at first Santa Cruz guitars and later Bill Tippin’s shop inform his excellent skills, and have given him countless hours to hone his craft. Thus, when we offer you his large-bodied 2015 Kalliope, we do so with great confidence in his guitars. Not only does the Kalliope project like a dreadnought–it also has the agile, articulate tonality of a much smaller guitar. The result is an instrument with a deep, resounding low-end that is perfectly balanced with rich trebles and a dynamic range. The Panamanian Rosewood back and sides have a desirable tight grain and the upper bout boasts a slender soundport which really projects a great portion of this guitar’s complex tone right to the player’s ear. Paired with a Swiss “Moon” Spruce top, the soundbox is light and responsive–the strings respond to the lightest touch, but the sound doesn’t become distorted under a more aggressive attack, either. Each note rings clear as a bell on this guitar. Chubbuck has added a Ryan-style arm bevel for playing comfort and a K&K Pure Mini pickup with vintage jack. Lastly, this guitar will travel with you safely wherever you go, thanks to the custom-molded fiberglass Calton Flight Case.

Kevin Chubbuck is a new name in the custom guitar world, but he comes to us with wonderful experience garnered at Santa Cruz Guitars and at Bill Tippin Guitars, where he still works with Bill crafting some of the finest guitars available today. One look at this Rouge Model OM and it’s easy to see the quality and high level of craftsmenship. But it’s the first few notes that really impressed us. Kevin is achieving a voice that is compelling and completely musical. The trebles are rich and full while the bass supports and remains clear. Together this is a very well balanced instrument versatile enough for a range of style. We are delighted to offer you the first of many Kevin Chubbuck guitars.

For years I have built for other guitar shops and have traveled coast to coast in pursuit of my craft. It began out west with Santa Cruz Guitar Company and brought me back east with Tippin Guitars. At Santa Cruz I was involved in all aspects of their box department. Carving tops, bending cutaways, binding, sanding, assembly. While at Tippin’s shop I further expanded upon these core techniques to include more modern features such as arm bevels, sound ports and fan frets. I was also involved in a wide variety of repairs and restorations on instruments ranging from vintage to boutique. While building for these shops during the day, I worked on my own guitars on nights and weekends.Eleven years of hard work have paid off as I have finally settled into my very own one-man shop here in Lynn, MA just north of Boston. My shop builds hollowbody electric and steel string acoustic guitars along with full repair and restoration services.A deep passion for music fuels my love of working with musicians, be it building a custom guitar or dialing in an instrument to lock in with their unique playing style. I also photograph musicians playing around the Boston area when I can find time to get out of the shop.
I've known Kevin for a while now through his work at Bill Tippins shop. It's clear to me he is a skilled craftsmen but more importantly has a great ear for tone. We are super excited to be the dealer for Kevin's guitars.
