This 2010 4.0XPH is decked out with top shelf figured Brazilian Rosewood and gorgeous Curly Black Redwood on top—something of the most eye catching tonewoods we’ve seen in a long while. The McPherson team obviously knows tonewood. The deep figure of the top comes alive under light, with large central curl tastefully transitioning into wide flame along the periphery. And that’s just the visual aspect: tonally, the Redwood and BRW work together for a powerful bass register that pairs nicely with a sweet, present midrange, and smooth trebles. Notes have great blossom and bloom when played with fingers, growing stronger and fuller as they ring out. Whether you play fingerstyle or with a pick, you’ll appreciate the venetian cutaway and L.R.
