Ah, a 000 that’s not afraid of a pick. This powerhouse 12-fretter from Preston Thompson comes to us with striking Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, and 25.4” scale for power and drive—two attributes this 2014 000 has in spades.
We loved to put this one through its paces on flatpicked fiddle tunes à la Norman Blake or Julian Lage, where the bass and mids really warmed up the voice before tuning down to Open D for a spin with fingertips. There we weren’t disappointed, either: played lightly, the Thompson 000-BRA has a sweet and mellow response.
The combination of a 12-fret body join and 25.4” scale makes for a dynamic 000 that’s at home in a variety of settings; this Thompson won’t collect dust in its case.
