Crisp and clear, with power and drive—this 2018 GF from Michael Greenfield is the image of the modern flattop. This is not your battle scarred Dreadnought from the 70s, this beauty is a sleek, well-oiled machine. Michael is one of our favorite builders, hands down, and we’re not alone. Just ask the likes of Andy McKee, Pipo Romero, and Brooke Miller.
At first glance, we’re drawn to the generous curves of the bouts, and Michael’s flawless fit & finish. Tightly figured Mahogany back and sides pairs up with Swiss Moonspruce on top for a dry, crisp clarity that’s especially lovely for those faster pickers out there; note decay is quick, so they don’t muddle into one another as you rattle out a stream of 1/16ths. The bass register is a lively one for thumbpicks, nail, and pads. We loved playing this one down in D tunings; with a 25 5/8” scale length, this Greenfield GF maintains a good, snappy string feel at lowered tunings.
This is the kind of guitar for which even flubbed notes sound good. Please, take this one of our hands before one of us decides to take it home for ourselves!
