From 2004, we have this Blanchard Sugar Pine with Honduran Rosewood back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top. A 12-fret to the body design with wider nut spacing makes this a fingerstylist’s dream at a great price. The guitar has been well played and now carries a James May UltraTonic pickup system. The tight grain of the Honduran Rosewood is staggering—almost reminiscent of Wenge—a true tonal powerhouse, wrapped in an ultimately comfortable mid-size body. A wonderful opportunity to step into the boutique guitar world.

Mark Blanchard has long been one of my favorite modern makers, and this Sugar Pine is a wonderful reminder of why. The Engelmann and Honduran Rosewood pairing gives it a voice that is both open and powerful, with a sweetness on the top end that fingerstylists will fall in love with. The 12-fret design and wider nut spacing make it incredibly inviting under the hands, while the mid-size body is comfortable for hours of play. 
Hearty midrange gives the voice an immediate feeling of heft, spanning the gap between a rich/blending bass register and trebles that cut through the mix, rather than get lost in the shuffle. I'm enjoying it with a flatpick and driving the strings a bit; got some headroom there. Midsize body feels easy and comfy, and Mark's neck profile is one of my all-time favorites.
