And now for something completely different! Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein commissioned a one-of-a-kind instrument that started with a completed Steve Klein top from the 1990s and became much more…
Paul collaborated with Luthiers Steve Kaufman and Jason Harshbarger to build this wonderful Klein inspired Jumbo guitar.Rare Pink Ivory wood was chosen for the back and sides and layered with Rosewood for added projection. A Klein solid Rosewood neck was added for feel and sustain and a Klein L-45.7 Bridge as well. Inlay artist extraordinaire, Larry Robinson was enlisted to create the stunning inlay designs by German Art Nouveau artist Peter Behrens. The inlay has a real sense of movement and flow and is done completely in real silver! Inset into the headstock is a hand carved solid Ivory Moon Face by Ron Fromkin. The body was then completely bound in real Ivory and tuner buttons carved from the same. So in addition to Pink Ivory wood, there is real salvaged Ivory in abundance. Something very rare these days.
There is a plaque affixed to the back on the inside (next to an original Klein label) that has all of us that participated and a quote, along with the name of the guitar – Pink Ivory Moon – it’s engraved real ivory as well. The finish is an oil finish with a French polish top. To keep it safe there is an original Klein Calton Case as well. Truly a work of art and an incredible musical instrument capable of voices that only a Steve Klein voiced top could produce. Big bass, bright trebles and everything in between.
