Michihiro Matsuda’s work is carrying the luthier’s trade into startlingly new and beautiful waters. From his adjustable neck block designs to his “Drop D” headstock stylings, Matsuda’s guitars exhibit all of the features of powerful, modern lutherie. In the photos below, you can see Matsuda‘s approach to rosettes with spalted wood sections, and the scalloping on the wings of the bridge—Matsuda‘s attention to detail is that keen. This 2003 M1 is dynamic, tight, sensitive. The East Indian Rosewood back and sides offer a dry and balanced tone, and the tight grained Blue Engelmann Spruce top projects notes clear as a bell. The modified OM shape is excellent for Fingerstylists with a light attack—this guitar responds best to delicate approach. The Fallaway Cutaway is sharp, both aesthetically and practically, granting easy access to upper frets, and the neck is C-shaped and delightfully slender.

This guitar is capable of several different voices, depending on your mood. Just when I was getting used to the tight, controlled upper registers in standard tuning, I was knocked off my feet when I dropped the low E to a D, the character changed dramatically! All of sudden, there was this sweet, gentle thunder to balance the chirpy treble strings. Matsuda's craftsmanship is exceptional: the fit and finish is clean, and the scalloping on the heel, bridge, saddle and nut is attractive.
Beautifully appointed as are all of the the Matsuda instruments. The tone is clear in all ranges and seems to respond well all the way up and down the neck.
