Here we have a Micheletti Osprey “rigid rim” jumbo in Western Red Cedar and Padauk. The rigid rim is a patented design element that Rick has developed in an effort to stiffen the sides to aid in greater projection and improved treble response. Additionally, this makes for a very comfortable instrument with no sharp corners. Indeed, the Osprey has a great big voice with clearly defined trebles, thanks to the intense Padauk back and sides, and plenty of warmth and bass response courtesy of the Cedar top.
I'm very impressed with Rick Micheletti's work. He's a true innovator, and his hard work has paid big dividends with the development of the rigid rim guitar. Working with the concept of the guitar top as a speaker, the rim acts as the frame to which the "cone" (top) is attached. I can really hear what he's getting at when I play the guitar -- the energy of the top is reflected off the rigid rim and out of the soundhole. The voice is huge, yet also sweet -- a wonderful balance of clarity and punch. Not to mention, it's so comfortable to play!
