Here's a great open-back banjo by Joe Mendel of Chesterfield, MO. It features solid Maple (reclaimed from a 100 year old Michigan farmhouse) construction, with and integral tone ring. It's perfect for clawhammer-style playing, and has excellent projection and sustain, thanks, in part, to the laminated maple neck. It's a whole lotta banjo for not much scratch!
If you're looking for a great-sounding, hand-crafted banjo that won't break the bank, this is the perfect instrument. It's open-back style is great for frailing, and it's got a simple elegance to it that I find very appealing. I also really like the look and feel of the maple neck, and this one features maple that comes from a 100 year old farmhouse!
I really like these banjos. The tone is bright and has lots of ring which can be dampened per each user's particular taste using a towel or duct tape on the head. For the samples, I used a paper towel folded up in a square and placed between the head and the tension bar on the neck end. All in all, the maple tone rings and maple bodies are a great sound combination.
