Brand New Dion No.04, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
We are pleased to present to you a brand new Model No.04 from Dion James. Not only is this instrument beautiful in sight and sound, but also in its construction, which is one of the more unique instruments we have seen in quite some time. Where to begin? Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, Sitka Spruce for the top (this Sitka was cut in the 1970s; it’s been well-seasoned). As for the back and sides, this guitar features an active hollow core back, similar to a double top, carbon fiber bridge plate, U brace, elevated fingerboard, and a cylindrically arched top and back. We could go on and on about what all makes this absolute beast of a guitar unique and powerful. From the custom-made Scheller tuners to the captured nut, and the subtle multiscale of 25.2-25.6”, this guitar is AMAZING. Look and listen for yourself

This one’s more than ready for action. Such a quick, energetic, expressive flattop! Dion knows how to tune his guitars for great responsiveness, note separation, and power–which this nearly new 2021 No.04 model has in spades. Indian Rosewood body with Italian Spruce top for starters; add a unique U brace around the soundhole and throw in a carbon fiber bridge plate, 10″ arch to the back, and micro arm bevel for a vibrant, modern voice and sharp aesthetic. The neck is satin finished and is one of the smoothest we’ve perhaps ever handled here in the shop, and on top Dion installed EVO frets in an Ebano fingerboard to keep the setup dialed in for the long haul. Notice the attention to every detail: right down to the nut that’s inset into the board. Sheller tuners just above that to round out the sharp-dressed looks.
If you’re looking for a modern flattop that comes preloaded with an expressive voice and added dynamism, plus effortless playability, this 2021 Dion No.04 could be just the ticket.

Our latest No.04 model from Dion Guitars is the definition of a powerhouse. Perfectly quartered, old growth Cocobolo back and sides paired with Engelmann Spruce on top. A gorgeously expressive voice that’s wide open already, excellent clarity across the registers–responds perfectly to both fingerstyle and flatpicking. We love the satin neck and flawless fit n finish throughout.

In addition to the brand new No. 4 we recently landed from Dion, we’ve got a lovingly played-in 2017 No. 4 which North Dakota musician Tom Brousseau recently toured with. Birdseye Maple back and sides paired with an Engelmann Spruce top, Dion’s ultra smooth black-dyed Spanish Cedar neck, and a lively, cracklin’ voice that breathes energy into your playing. An upper bout soundport gives the player a bit more “me in the monitor,” and the setup is slick and easy on the hands. We love the clear and even response this No. 4 offers, from fret one all the way to dusty number 20. Dion’s aesthetic lets the quality of the wood speak for itself, and the figure of the Birdseye Maple throughout speaks volumes. And we’re listening.

We’re proud to announce a new partnership with Dion Guitars, which we’ve been working on for some time. And we’re doubly proud to offer our first Dion No. 4 model here with European Birdseye Maple and Italian Spruce. The Honduran Mahogany neck is dyed black and polished to a feather-smooth satin finish that’s remarkable to the touch. High gloss U.V.-cured Polyester elsewhere for style points, and Dion’s crisp fit-n-finish and contrasting light and dark aesthetic come together in a striking visual presentation that manages to feel familiar and new at the same time.
Small soundport in the upper bout gives the player a bit extra in their ear, three-on-a-plate Waverly tuners set off the dyed headstock, and the snug fit of the Visesnut flight case (including case cover) puts one at ease: this Dion is in safe hands. We loved the lively and energetic response. This No. 4 has a crisp attack that’s followed by flush of warm overtones to sweeten up the voice, and there’s just enough bark in the bass to reward your thumb or flatpick when you dig in.
Our very first Dion guitar fits right into whatever situation we threw at it, and it responded with crisp definition and a smoothly dialed in setup. We’d recommend the No. 4 for just about anything.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, birds eye maple, evo frets, flatpick, OM, bolt-on, bolt on

Dion Guitars are modern steel-string acoustics known for their striking minimalism. Quick and responsive whether played light or loud, they have a clear voluminous voice, a complex range of sound, and vibrant sustain.
Emphasizing line and proportion, the design philosophy behind Dion Guitars asks what can be removed rather than what can be added.
Builder Dion James operates out of a shared shop in the prairie city of Edmonton, Canada, producing eight to ten guitars each year. With a deep respect for the tradition of innovation in lutherie, Dion’s approach builds on the elements of the guitar that have proven successful over time while adapting those that have not.
The same belief informs each of Dion’s builds: that the beauty of the acoustic guitar lies in the instruments essential function and that it should inspire use as well as admiration.
