Glass smooth, and a dream machine with both hands on deck. Simon Fay’s Model One manages to pack a voluminous kind of power into an easy-playing body with only 15 inches across the lower bout, here with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides plus German Spruce on top for creamy mids and bell-like treble response. Playability is further enhanced with an understated arm bevel, florentine cutaway, and a 25.5-25″ multiscale setup. A slightly wider fingerboard with 1 13/16″ nut feels oh so comfortable for otherwise cramped chord shapes. We absolutely love this one in DADGAD, where that extended bass register really the room to stretch its legs. The voice is characterized by a smooth note-to-note balance and round trebles. Elegant Rodgers tuners at the headstock, EVO frets, and a custom Hoffee case with added Thinsulate layer for maximum protection rounds out the package.

Serious powerhouse on the scene; hard to put this beauty down for any length of time. Simon Fay knocked it right out of the park with this OM from 2009—lively and energetic, crisp with great pop!, fires right out of the soundhole. This one takes to a flatpick like a natural, and has enough sensitivity to respond great under fingers as well. This exemplifies the attributes of the OM, namely, well-rounded and equally at home in every setting. Additionally, the setup is silky smooth, and Fay pulled out gorgeous tonewoods to dress it up. Flamed Claro Walnut back and sides (elements of crisp and woody tone) with Sinker Redwood on top (and the warmth and color that fills out the rest of the voice), plus Snakewood bindings and a soundport for creature comforts. The sides are double thicknessed with Zebrawood interiors, and Simon braced the Redwood top with his unique T bracing pattern.

Simon Fay’s Model One is easy on the eyes, easy on the hands, easy on the ears. This multiscale beauty comes to us from 2015 in impeccable shape, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and German Spruce top. 25.5” on the bass to 25” on the treble, the fanned fretboard is a great candidate for standard pitch and more exotic tunings without confusing the left hand. Gold EVO frets insure longevity between fret jobs, and the slim neck profile is oh so smooth in hand. Bass response offers a sweet blooming effect after the initial attack, which lends itself well to DADGAD. This Simon Fay Model One is a prime example of the contemporary fingerstyle guitar: agile, responsive, and dynamic.

It’s been several years since we’ve seen a Simon Fay guitar in the shop—and we’re tickled pink by this brand new Model One from Simon himself. This guitar exudes professionalism: the fit and finish are flawless, the aesthetic streamlined and quietly modern, and the voice is engineered with excellent note separation and sustain. With a short multiscale spread of half an inch (25.5” bass to 25” treble) and EVO frets, this Fay plays easily, and remains crisp and responsive when taken into altered and open tuning territory. We found DADF#AD to be a particular favorite.
Cuban Mahogany back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, and a Redwood rosette to tie it together. Bois de Rose bridge, fossilized nut and saddle, Alessi tuners—Simon’s Model One is the complete package, and one we recommend heartily if you’re looking for a gorgeous instrument with clarity at the heart of its sound, and a trim punching weight of 4lbs 3oz to keep you playing more easily and for longer.
Our Fay Model One is a prize worth keeping.

Our first guitar from Simon stirred up quite a lot of interest and sold within days for the simple reason that he’s an exciting new builder with incredible tone, unique style and is currently offering our customers great introductory pricing. This new arrival is crafted from Amazon Rosewood and Carpathian Spruce, two woods with special character that joins forces brilliantly. The Amazon Rosewood has deep reddish hues which Simon accented by using Cocobolo bindings and headplate as well as a Red Myrtle Burl Rosette. The Master Grade Carpathian Spruce top has the power of Adirondack with just a hint more sweetness. Simon braces his tops with Adirondack spruce and employs Spanish Cedar kerfing and back bracing. The voice is powerful and lush and the sound seems to swell on it’s leaving the top. Another superb Simon Fay guitar.

For our first guitar from Simon he selected a rare and wondrous ‘Sinker’ Redwood top. This is rare Redwood salvaged after more than 100 years at the bottom of the Big River near Mendocini California. It is thought to have originally grown high up on the ridge in conditions that make it very stiff and strong. This Sinker Redwood can be made thinner than typical Redwood and we can tell you the voice is astonishing. The Sinker Redwood combines with the highly figured Walnut body to put forth a completely satisfying voice for fingerstyle or strumming. The notes are clear and articulate, yet round and warm. This top is definitely a bit more brilliant than usual on a Redwood guitar. We love the natural dark color which comes from mineral deposits in the river. We invite you to view the first of many Fay guitars.

I do several things in my building that are non-traditional, namely with my bracing design. I have experimented heavily in my bracing approach – deviating from your typical Martinesque x-braced design. My bracing philosophy is to build a light but very strong frame from the bridge to the headblock and leave the lower bout as free as possible. I have come up with a bracing design that exemplifies these goals. T BracingMy exterior design goals are very classical but are also modern at the same time. I have incorporated the binding/purfling scheme throughout the design to yield an intelligent and artistic feel to the guitar – I think I have succeeded in creating a unique and beautiful look. I think the most promising characteristic of a great luthier is a drive for perfection. It makes no sense to spend over a 150 hours on an instrument just to make it okay. And I think that is why I love lutherie so much. It is a great expression of spontaneous creativity and purposed design. It is both intellectual and hands-on. And it is more than just fine woodworking because it is a blending of those skills with the mediums of art and music. In summary, I have found few things more satisfying than stringing up a guitar for the first time – knowing that all my hard work will be passed on to another to be used as a springboard for their own passion and creativity.
