2016 Gaffney OM, Madagascar Rosewood/Engelmann Spruce
It is a delight to have this incredibly articulate and expressive OM from Julian Gaffney in the shop today. Julian built this guitar well apprenticing with Ervin Somogyi in 2016, and picked out a dramatic set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides that pairs perfectly with Engelmann Spruce on top, plus segmented rosette, carved bridge, and florentine cutaway. The voice is huge and expansive, especially considering its slender OM proportions; this Gaffney has opened up handsomely since 2016.

A brand spanking new 00 from the one and only Julian Gaffney. Julian’s guitars have always been showstoppers here at the shop. His meticulous attention to detail and artistry is undeniable. The use of dyed burl as inlay material really sets Julian apart from other modern luthiers. Dramatic Cocobolo for the back and sides, and Swiss Spruce on top. This instrument has a robust sound and feel to it, with wide specs for the nut to allow for the most optimal left-hand access to all the pitches one could create with this creature. Brazilian Rosewood for the bridge and bridge pins.
Once again, this is an area in which Julian Gaffney shines. In our world, the headstock profile and bridge design are quite literally a builder’s calling cards. Here, Julian shows he is among the most unique and easily distinguished in the world of modern lutherie. It doesn’t stop with aesthetics. Most new guitars, quite frankly, sound new—they haven’t existed out in the world enough to be seasoned and they need breaking in. This beast, however, does not. Out of the case, this instrument sings. Full-bodied sound, significantly outpacing its size in volume. This guitar is a complete experience for both player and listener alike.

This 00 from Julian Gaffney is small but mighty. With the energy of a much larger instrument, and the comfort of a much smaller one; this is liable to leave your jaw hanging open. Julian has gone the whole nine yards in his training, starting at Bryan Galloup‘s school, then with Rudy’s Music and later working with Roger Sadowski, before apprenticing with fingerstyle godfather Ervin Somogyi for several years. The pedigree is strong, and his instruments are the sweet fruits of all those years. What a sweet fruit this guitar is, gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides, with a European Spruce top– Dyed burl appointments throughout, astounding inlay work covering the entire body. Such exquisite detail from the burled endgraft, meticulously carved bridge to the perfectly beveled headstock. In one word this guitar is MAGIC.

This is an extraordinary guitar that we picked up from Julian Gaffney at this years Wodstock guitar show. Julian is a current apprentice in the Somogyi shop, so we can tell you straight out of the gate that Julian has the chops and really understands how to build an exceptional guitar. This is an OM model in East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. We are always impressed by the quality builders and guitars that comes out of the Somogyi apprenticeship, Julian has done great work here. There is Somogyi vibe that we love, with plenty of Julians own taste thrown in the mix, this is a beautiful piece of art to look at and to hold. The real star here of this guitar is the tone, it has the big sonorous bass that the Somogyi school is known for, with shimmering and round trebles. This is a guitar that you will have no problem getting lost in, as a matter of fact we dare you not to.

In 2023 the Dream Guitars team attended the 2023 Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase. There were so many excellent guitars present it proved to be quite difficult to keep track of it all. However a few guitars stood out. We are incredibly fortunate to have brought back with us a few of them, and this 00 from Julian Gaffney was at the top of our list. Lucky Strike Redwood, and Palo Escrito are the ingredients for this dynamic powerhouse of a guitar. As you will hear and see for yourself this instrument is an absolute masterpiece. For it to be a smaller sized instrument the sound and affect it has on player and listener alike is truly staggering. This guitar sold before we even listed it. That is an indication of a magical guitar.

My journey into the world of guitar building began at a young age. For as long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated with the creation of objects, be they clay, cloth, plastic or wood. As long as they require dexterity, patience and offer a creative outlet, I’m in! When I finished school, I applied to the Galloup School of Lutherie, where I had my first real introduction to the craft of guitar-building. Afterwards, I got a job working for the preeminent electric builder in New York, Roger Sadowsky, where over seven and a half years I honed my craft. After many years of making my own steel string guitars in the after-hours I decided to make another change. I applied for and was accepted as an apprentice of Ervin Somogyi. Ervin represents the pinnacle of the craft that I’m so in love with and with much excitement I relocated to the east bay to pursue my dream of learning from the best.
