We can only imagine the hundreds of hours that have been poured into this knockout 1997 Dreadnought from Wayne Henderson. Figured Mahogany and Appalachian Spruce, thistle headstock, weighing in at a scant 3lbs 13oz—exactly 20 years old, and still crooning with the best of them.
The voice is full of the woody crackle you’d expect from Mahogany, and the middle register is crunchy and well defined. The trebles cut but aren’t shrill, and the bass is lively but plays well with the other kids on the fretboard playground. The slim neck carve makes for quick and easy playability, and the Appalachian Spruce top is responsive enough for fingerpicking after you’ve worn through all your flatpicks.
And make no mistake, this Henderson Dread start making your other guitars jealous because you’ll be playing it so much. It’s already opened up handsomely, and the tone will only continue to improve. According to the owner, Wayne only had two sets of this beautifully Flamed Mahogany, and this is potentially the only set that Wayne used to build.

What could be finer than quality time with a Wayne Henderson guitar? Answer: quality time with 000-28 #51, the guitar Wayne built before his personal guitar, D-18 #52. Indian Rosewood and Spruce, Wayne’s name emblazoned across the thistle headstock inlay, and his curving bridge pin layout, match up smooth as you please with the traditional Martin-style herringbone appointments, Grained Ivoroid binding, and MOP diamonds across the fingerboard.
Around the block a time or two, this Hendo beau from 1978 is in excellent shape—all that time has not been wasted, either. The kind of quick response you’d expect from vintage, played-in guitars? We’re happy to say that yes, this 000 has more than opened up, and the 25.4” scale and soft-V neck is a delight for picks or fingertips.
We all love a good Henderson Dreadnought for volume and projection, but this lil 000-28 has a bit of the “little dog, big bark” complex, which is to say it’s as comfy as a lapdog but prone to frequent bouts of rather loud howling when you dig in for a bluesy solo.
We’d love to keep this beauty for ourselves, but that would hardly be fair to all you loyal Henderson lovers! Give us a ring for an in-hand description of the 000 Wayne built just before his personal D-18!

We have had the immense good fortune to have had quite a few Henderson guitars come through our shop, they don’t hang around long, but we sure enjoy them while they are here. Each Henderson that comes along is a gem and has something special to say about Wayne and his passion for the craft, but this one in particular has a little something extra special built in to it, and we love it. This is a D-42 model in highly figured Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. Wayne added a few special appointments to this guitar like abalone purfling on the fingerboard, floral headstock inlay and etched gold Waverly tuners. True to form this dread has power and headroom to spare, plenty of bass and round trebles to be had here. Another fine guitar from the Wizard of Rugby.

Sweet, responsive, sonorous. Everyone in the shop agrees, that is how this 000-42 from Wayne Henderson can best be described. Henderson’s prodigious gifts at lutherie have yielded a guitar of astounding clarity and dark, somber appointments, one which boasts Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and an Appalachian Spruce top voiced to a gently enveloping timbre. The ink-dark sunburst finish is a match for the complexity and depth of the guitar’s voice, with Abalone and Grained Ivoroid trim for a delicate sparkle of light. In Henderson’s hands, the Brazilian Rosewood and Appalachian Spruce have been reduced to a perfect thickness to produce the rolling, articulate, lush tone that this 000-42 pulls off so well. And what better way to warm up that lushness than a 12-fret neck? The highs are particularly sweet, and the middle register is clean and controlled in a way that fingerstylists yearn for: the balance is precise, and each string rings crystalline. This guitar comes with a Guardian hardshell case.

This 2007 D-28 with Brazilian Rosewood and Appalachian Spruce may look cut a smoky figure with its shade top finish, but the voice is clear as a bell and loud as a July 4th cannon. Wayne’s trademark “violin-style” headstock is here in all its glory, with a Brazilian Rosewood veneer that matches nicely the back and sides.
The tone of these trebles is fat and juicy, with the kind of edge that cuts clean through the mix, so you don’t have to worry about losing ground to your banjo toting bandmates. In fact, folks around you might want ear protection, because this D-28 has got some serious projection and sustain tucked away beneath the Appalachain Spruce hood. Honestly, Bluegrass never sounded so sweet as when played on this Henderson.

As Ervin Somogyi is the definitive Modified Dreadnought builder, so Wayne Henderson is the archtypal Dreadnought luthier. It’s practically unanimous, the reputation of his guitars: you can’t get much better than a Henderson. One of Henderson’s best models, this one in particular exhibits all the qualities we look for in a Dreadnought: a hearty, defined low-end, a silky middle register balanced with the top-end, teeth-rattling projection and tone. Wayne may have found one of the most beautiful sets of Brazilian Rosewood left on the planet when he built this guitar–the grain is chocolate-black and caramel–and we haven’t seen an Adirondack Spruce top with so much silking across its medulary rays in a long time. Bound together in Grained Ivoroid (a vintage throwback) with Herringbone trim and a Zigzag back strip, the sound box on this D-28 gives you an enormous, enveloping sound where the trebles are balanced sweetly against the bass. With a healthy dose of articulation and a dash or sweet upper register overtones, this D-28 is ready to blow the pants off of the competition–even other Henderson D-28s will get a run for their money. This guitar comes with the original Guardian hardshell case.

This Henderson D-18 in Red Spruce and Mahogany is how a pre war style guitar should be done, and is a perfect example of why Henderson guitars are so sought after. This thing is a flatpicking cannon, it would be hard to find a better suited flatpicking guitar. When you pick this guitar up you instantly realize why Wayne is so well regarded in the guitar world. His guitar are light as a feather, superbly built, and sound like heaven. This is as good as it gets in the D-18 world, if you are looking for the wholly grail of bluegrass guitars, look no further.
