1959 Masaru Kono, Rosewood/Spruce
Smooth to a T and balanced like a dancer. This 1959 Masaru Kono performs with precision and elegance, with a lovely balance across the registers and a bell-like clarity in the mids and trebles. We love this evenness, which makes this an excellent Classical for recording, or the artist who needs the string-to-string balance to be dialed in. Going strong since 1959, this Kono has had a few repairs and is in great playing shape. Indian Rosewood body with Spruce on top, 650mm scale with a Rosewood fingerboard, and a Spanish Cedar neck that features more of a C-shaped profile than the U shape commonly found on nylon string instruments.

A blast from the past which packs a wallop! Our 1964 No. 2 from Masaru Kono (later spelled Kohno) is a keen example of why we love well-preserved old guitars: the voice has opened up completely, and the projection is there in spades.
This Concert Classical is in great working shape considering its age; there’s only the usual play wear across the Indian Rosewood and Spruce typical for a five-decades-old guitar. The bass response is very lively and crisp, and pairs well with the sparkling trebles. Simply appointed, but voiced for articulation and clarity, this Kono No. 2 is a great deal for a vintage classical that’s ready to roll for many more years to come.

Here is a a rare and historic early Kono No. 3 Model guitar crafted in 1964. At this point Masaru Kohno did not use the ‘h’ in Kohno. This vintage Kono guitar features Rosewood and Spruce for that crisp, robust tone that professionals have come to expect from Masaru’s instruments. The super playable, smooth action on the Rosewood fretboard and 51mm nut makes this early Kohno extremely playable. A testament to the quality of Kohno guitars is how well this one has stood the test of time. Nearly 50 years old and still plays perfectly with plenty of remaining saddle. This is a wonderful collectible Kono from the first years of Master Masaru Kohno’s illustrious career.
