1976 Lipton C, Brazilian/Spruce
A piece of resonance history, folks, that’s been around the block a time or two since the 1970s—and it’s still kicking with the best of them. Walter Lipton brought this gorgeous Model C to life all the way back in 1976 with gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Spruce on top, and adorned it with his inlay and marquetry skills, impressive even then. The guitar has certainly been played in and out something fierce, but our repair team has gone over it with their fine-toothed luthier’s comb (available now at StewMac) and made sure everything was stable and shipshape. While they were at it, they refretted the board, so it feels and plays like new, but with the impressive patina of age and hours of use. Lipton’s C is the equivalent of an 0000: lots of bass response and projection, but the trebles really take the cake for their crispness and how easily they cut through the mix.
This is a great opportunity to pick up a piece that others have done the extensive work of playing it in and opening it up. There aren’t many Walter Liptons lying around, and for good reason!

We are lucky to have another amazing guitar to adorn our walls today: a 2007 0000 from Walter Lipton himself! This is the sort of guitar which just begs to be played. First, you are drawn to the gorgeous and interesting Herringbone trim across the European Spruce top and the rosette in alternating bands of black, green, red, and white, Then, when you turn the guitar around, you’ll want to be careful not to let your jaw drop all the way to instrument when you see just how perfectly straight-grained the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are. Really, take a ruler to those lines; the ruler will look out of square. Add to that a pyramid-style bridge and MOP snowflakes inlaid across the Ebony fretboard, and you’ve got a stunning example of master craftsmanship in your hands. Now: it’s the tone where this guitar really gets to shine. The setup is glossy smooth and perfect for a wide range of applications, but Traditional or Blues arrangements with a thumbpick sound, in particular, reverent. The large body offers powerful projection and sustain, and if you let the harmonics ring in the upper register, you’ll find some sweet overtones that hang in the air for days. When the Brazilian Rosewood and the European Spruce are voiced this well, the guitar exhibits a strong and complex tonality–and Lipton has certainly achieved just that. This is the sort of guitar which plays through you, rather than away from you.

Here we a truly amazing guitar: the 2010 Whyte Laydie Tribute from master luthiers Walter Lipton and Bill Tippin. This joint project celebrates the amazing guitars of its namesake in exquisite detail. Custom etched inlay from Doug Unger adorn this beauty from head to toe and his work is incredibly precise and full of mysteries. A stunning variety of materials were employed to make this one shimmer in an almost iridescent fashion from every angle, but breathtaking looks aside, the tone of this piece is monstrous. Big and lush and full as you would expect from two world class builders working with exhibition grade Brazilian Rosewood that came from the Martin factory many long years ago and a true Master Grade German Spruce top. This is a museum quality piece that is ultimately playable as well. A treasure.
