What a beauty. We love African Blackwood, it’s one of the best contenders with Brazilian Rosewood for king of the tonewoods, and here paired with Adirondack Spruce in Lowden’s F-50c body the result is a powerful voice that’s dynamic, colorful, and expressive. We’ve got a lovely example here from 2015 that’s already opened up handsomely, and plays so smoothly. Figured Koa bindings incorporate a Ryan-style arm bevel plus venetian cutaway, and the 5-ply Mahogany-Rosewood-Mahogany neck is carved in the GL Standard profile; just the right amount of heft for the left hand to connect with. This F-50c weighs in under five pounds and feels solid on the leg. Lowden’s team balanced the neck and body here for an easy playing experience, made apparent with the slick setup and satin finish. Please note, this Lowden now has a K&K Trinity pickup installed (photos were taken before the install, so show an empty endpin slot).

This is one Lowden which graduated at the top of its class in 2016. What a powerhouse! George Lowden’s F model does it all, and does so exceedingly well. We love this F-50c for strumming as much as fingerstyle; it’s got plenty of warmth in the mids to match the crisp trebles, and a sweet bass response that really fills out the voice. With a 25.5” scale for added punch, this Lowden cuts right through the mix and also handles lowered tunings with ease. A natural choice for DADGAD and even other, more eccentric tunings. The body is comprised of master grade Madagascar Rosewood (so, so lovely) and master Sinker Redwood on top (hence all that warmth), and comes to us today with hardly a mark to be found. Pale Maple bindings come together with an arm bevel on the top plate and a rounded cutaway for creature comfort. GL Standard neck profile; Gotoh 510 tuners; silky satin finish throughout.

Take up this 2016 Lowden S-50, and get ready to lose track of time. The S body features a slim, 14 3/4” lower bout for a warm and focused tone, which is further enhanced by African Blackwood back and sides (one of our favorite tonewoods) and Sinker Redwood (reclaimed from the Mendocino Valley in our own California) on top, both master grade. The GL Standard neck profile is one of our favorite setups for fingerstyle, where this S-50 really likes to live. This one draws you in; there’s a glassy quality to the trebles that’s particularly haunting, and fills out the voice.

Lowden’s F body fits the sweet spot bill for just about everything you throw at it. Big enough to hold up under a flatpick and for strumming, small enough for intimacy and myriad tones with fingerstyle—and everything in between. This F-50 from 2016 is all that with the added warmth, color, and dynamism of African Blackwood back and sides (one of our favorite tonewoods) and Sinker Redwood on top (reclaimed from the Mendocino Valley in California), both master grade. 25.5” scale adds definition and crispness to all that warmth, and the GL Standard neck profile is a comfortable, familiar old friend. This beauty is like new and oh. so. ready for action.

Livewire lil Lowden! George’s Wee Lowden model is a petite flattop packing some powerful projection and color under its slim hood, here in gorgeous Redwood with African Blackwood back and sides. This Wee Lowden 35 Twin was originally built alongside its WL-50 counterpart in 2015 with the Lowden 35-style appointments. GL Standard neck profile feels über comfy in hand with Lowden’s trademark satin finish (featured throughout the build here), and the short, 24” scale gives added warmth and bloom to the mids and trebles.

If it’s good enough for DADGAD maestro Pierre Bensusan, it’s good enough for us. Our Bensusan Signature Lowden is a smooth operator from tuner to tail. Built in 2009 but with hardly any marks at all, this Lowden is in excellent shape with Honduran Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce top, and a custom Headway preamp and pickup rig—so good. Lowden’s fingerstyle, low profile neck makes for easy left hand work, and of course it’s a fabulous DADGAD instrument. The satin finish will prevent any accidental audience blindness when you’re on stage, and the arm bevel keeps you playing as easy as breathing.

We’ve just landed a smooth-as-silk Lowden F-50 in African Blackwood and Sinker Redwood that nails it when it comes to balance, clarity, and playability. This 2016 beauty is like new, comes outfitted with a Ryan-style arm bevel and Hiscox flight case, and 5-ply neck for a stable playing experience. The previous owner Plek’d this Lowden to effortlessness; playing as easy as breathing with this F-50. The F body strikes a fine balance in the midsize category, granting it plenty of bass and projection without being unwieldy in your arms. The tonewoods are top notch here, and we’re such a sucker for African Blackwood when it’s paired with Redwood—a velvety, rich, enveloping tonality.

George Lowden’s S-50 strikes the razor’s edge balance between small and large bodiies, retaining the power of a big box and the clarity and warmth of a 00 or 000. This S-50 from 2017 is a beautiful example of this balance, here in Madagascar Rosewood and Alpine Spruce. We love this guitar. The word that kept coming up for us while playing it was “Intimate.” As in, close, personal, a familiar voice in your ear. This S-50 has sweet trebles, and the kind of string-to-string balance that is crucial in a fingerstyle guitar. Plek’d for the previous owner, it plays like butter!

George Lowden’s team knocked it out the park with this 2014 F50C. Notes have juicy, round definition with lots of color, and we love the balance between the bass and treble registers in particular. Gorgeously dark African Blackwood back and sides paired with a Redwood top for sweet overtones and an enveloping quality that’s perfect for fingerstyle. Lowden’s F body strikes a balance between their largest O body size and the more intimate proportions of their S size. The scale length is 25.6 inches, adding a touch of extra tension to the strings for added pop, and this F50C features the GL Standard neck carve. No pickup installed, so it’s ready for whatever amplification system you need for on stage work—and in the meantime it handles handsomely as a recording guitar.

What better way to celebrate four decades in the lutherie business than a limited run of your highest-calibre guitars? George Lowden’s 40th Anniversary guitars come in a range of body shapes, but each has its special designation as an anniversary guitar, and each and every one has been built without compromise, and with heritage-grade tonewoods. The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides on this O-35x feature an electrifying grain pattern that caught our eye right out the gate. Lowden then paired that with a Redwood top for warmth and color, and Koa bindings and arm bevel to tie it together.
This is Lowden’s biggest box, which gives extra authority and presence to the voice, not to mention increased projection and sustain. George’s GL standard neck profile is a generously curved C, and when paired with a 25 5/8” scale length and 1 3/4” nut makes for an easy playing guitar that soaks up lowered tunings like bread does butter. This is a unique breed of flattop that responds well to both picks and fingers; the dynamic range allows for both aggressive and light attacks without compromising note clarity and definition.
Lowden’s 40th Anniversary O-35x sounds as good as it feels, and it feels as good as it looks. The complete picture.Other keywords: fingerstyle, finger style, flatpicking, ireland, irish, made in ireland, anniversary guitar, brazilain, brw, bra, O35x, 0-35x, 035x

This little gem has been kept in pristine condition, and features Lowden’s trademark satin finish so you’ll only blind the audience with your dazzling musicianship, not the glare from the lights.
The short 630mm scale makes for easy playability, and paired with the Sinker Redwood top makes for a smooth, warm response that fleshes out the bass and lower mids. Excellent sustain, especially considering this is a smaller guitar. It’s refreshing to find a guitar that plays so easily. This is one Lowden that’s hard to put down.

If there were more guitars like this Lowden O-38C in the world, entire economies would suffer from folks skipping out on work to stay home and play music. Luckily for our society at large, we have only one such Lowden in the shop (at the moment). This is a beautiful example of how rich and nuanced Brazilian Rosewood can be, and how a big-box guitar can be voiced for a quick response and crisp attack. If you dig in a bit, this Lowden has impressive reserves of sheer volume without flattening the tone and making mush of your music.
This Cedar O-38C has been very well taken care of, and is ready for heaps more action. The setup is nice and easy, and there’s still lots of life left in the saddle. Kudos to the previous owner for being such a thoughtful custodian—it’s rare to see a guitar in such fine shape after being played for over two decades.

In the summer of 1961, at the age of ten, George began what was to be a lifelong pursuit to build guitars, which would inspire players with their sound, feel and looks. “My friend Alan French and I made two guitars” with the help of his dad, who was a boat builder in Groomsport, County Down. The “guitars” had fishing line for strings, bent over nails for frets, and a square soundbox!!” – George Lowden “I learned everything the hard way. I had no one to teach me how to avoid the obvious pitfalls. I tried new shapes, bracing designs and many other ideas and gradually emerged from the ‘hard school’ of self taught guitar making.” – George Lowden.
We are proud to represent both George Lowden's personally crafted guitars and his new George Lowden small production factory in Ireland. George has parted from Avalon and is now producing small numbers of the highest quality instruments without compromise.
