2007 Teel 00-45 Martin Conversion, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Martin’s Director of Research and Development, Tim Teel, brings us a fantastic example of top shelf conversion work in this 2007 00-45, previously a 00-28G from 1961. Perfect Brazilian Rosewood is finely quartersawn with some spiderweb figuring, against an Adirondack Spruce top that was harvested from the Smoky Mountain National Park after it fell during Hurricane Opal in 1995. Tonewood maestro John Arnold acquired the salvaged Red Spruce and processed some incredible sets, like the exceedingly tight-grained one used here. The original 28-style appointments have been eschewed in favor of the full 45 treatment, complete with Abalone along the top, back, and sides, snowflakes & diamonds position markers, and headstock torch (cut by well-known mandolin builder and inlay artist Tom Ellis of Precision Pearl Inlay fame). A light-chocolate, full-size pickguard completes the picture. One final note, this conversion includes a new 14-fret neck with modified V profile, and a particularly thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish.

Martin has put together a lot of unique models over the years–but this D-50 Deluxe might just take the cake. This is number 32 of only 50 such guitars ever built, complete with Brazilian Rosewood body and heavily bearclawed Sitka Spruce and a sprawling panoply of inlays along nearly every surface. The fingerboard boasts an intricate tree of life vine that extends onto the headplate (itself trimmed in Abalone that ties into the fingerboard bindings and trim). The vine motif continues across the pickguard, and flanks the heel at both sides, as well as below the heelcap, and at the endgraft. The top is trimmed with Abalone herringbone–the first we’ve ever seen; ditto at the rosette and the back center strip. An additional perk? Star sapphires bound in 14-karat gold at the bridge pins and end pin. And all of this comes wrapped in a custom genuine, top hide leather hardshell case.
It’s amazing to us that Martin managed to build 50 of these D-50 Deluxes. The sheer amount of time and energy that went into this guitar beggars the imagination. An exquisite opportunity to acquire the center of your lifetime collection.

Here’s something you don’t see every day. This is one of the exclusive run of 100 limited edition guitars that Martin built in 1997 to commemmorate Mr. Blue Yodel himself, the one and only Jimmie Rodgers–number seven of that exclusive 100, in fact. Martin has recreated Rodgers’ 1928 000-45 that he custom ordered, right down to “Blue Yodel” and “Jimmie Rodgers” inlaid along the fingerboard and headplate, and of course Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top. The pearl work is exquisite throughout! The only modern touch is the inclusion of an adjustable truss rod in the neck. Otherwise, this is old school through and through.

The sweets of time pairs with extensive appointments and custom inlays by Dave Nichols in this 1987 Martin D-45 Tree of Life. Indian Rosewood body with Spruce top; white bindings; black (inlaid!) pickguard; original case. Not only does this Martin benefit from all of the Abalone trim along the top, sides, back, and heel–this beauty is adorned with a sprawling Tree of Life vine along the fingerboard, a motif that continues onto the bridge and even across the pickguard. A prodigious amount of work from one of the inlay industry’s household names, Dave Nichols. This instrument has been well cared for and is still in great playing shape. Good saddle height left, frets well rounded, and a 1 11/16″ nut for a slender lefthand feel.

Tex! Is raring to go. This 1944 Martin D-18, affectionately dubbed “Tex” for its namesake carved on the top (plus “Duncan” below that), is so explosively energetic that you breathe on the strings and it goes to eleven. Quick, lively, with a crisp fundamental like the best Mahogany/Adi combo you ever heard. This is a road warrior that’s not road weary; wide awake. Extensive finish checks and play wear only add to the package. If you’re ready for a 1944 D-18 that packs a cold hard punch, sign on for a ride with this seasoned singer.

If there’s another guitar quite like this one, we haven’t heard of it. This 1930 Martin 000-45 Deluxe is the prewar collector’s sweetest dream, preceding the extremely rare 11 OM-45 Deluxes in 1930 and, as some suggest, acting as the de facto inspiration for those rarest of Martins. This instrument has Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with the diagonal mill marks that we associate with our all-time favorite 30s Martins, paired with Adirondack Spruce on top, and all the painstakingly applied 45-style appointments along the top, sides, back, heel, and of course the inlaid pickguard. (Fun fact, in 1931, Martin stopped supplying these pickguards). Very well cared for, this 000-45 Deluxe is a lifetime instrument, and we are humbled to have it here.

This is the model that has inspired millions of players across a number of generations. The 1930 Martin OM-45 Deluxe. Brazilian Rosewood plus Adirondack Spruce, 45-style Abalone trim along the top, fingerboard extension, heel, and back; torch headstock; flower inlaid pickguard. #44068 was the sixth built in 1930, of a believed only 11 in total.
It is an honor to have this instrument in our hands for a time. To describe this as a holy grail guitar honestly doesn’t do it justice.

Oh, to lose track of time with this piece of history. Our 1944 000-21 is a sweet dream made reality; last year Martin exclusively used Adirondack Spruce, and one of the last serial numbers to have scalloped braces; straight-lace Brazilian Rosewood back and sides; silk-smooth setup. The voice has the liveliness and depth that can only come with age, and is a treat to behold under both fingertips and flatpicks. 21-Style appointments throughout, herringbone rosette, and original case and finish, as are the bridge and plate.

How sweet the years do taste, when they come served up on such a beautifully vintage plate: a 1938 martin 000-21. Brazilian Rosewood with ruler-straight grain, forward-braced Adirondack Spruce on top, and the sort of age-appropriate wear that speaks volumes about the decades and decades of good music that have passed through its soundhole.
Formerly owned by none other than Chris Robinson of Black Crows fame, this 000-21 has an extra-extra dose of mojo, and after receiving some tender, loving care this beauty is off to the races again! There aren’t too many ‘38s lying around, and their numbers are only going to dwindle further over time.

From the decade that featured the greats like Chuck Berry and Hank Williams, comes our livewire Martin 00-18: straight out of 1954. This little beauty has been well cared for over the years, and is in great playing shape today with lots of life left to the saddle and almost no fret wear to speak of. Being an 18-style with Mahogany back and sides and Sitka top, this 00 has an extra heaping dose of crackle and pop in the bass, so much so that you’d think you were playing a larger guitar. It’s always a pleasure to find a vintage Martin that’s been set up nicely; this 00-18 plays like a breeze with a nut just a squeeze wider than 1 11/16” and a soft V neck profile.

A piece of 1932 that’s alive and well. Here we’ve landed a Martin OM-28 in strong playing shape with some repairs over the years, plus an incredibly wide open, expressive voice. You just can’t get this with a torrefication rig! The Adirondack Spruce top has opened up completely in the past 90 years; the trebles particularly thick, present, and articulate. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides have had some cracks repaired, but are in great playing shape. It’s incredible to see such “boring” Brazilian Rosewood, the grain is arrow straight. Bar frets along the fingerboard have been dressed by our own repair staff, and they feel excellent under your fingertips. V neck has been played in over the years and feels like your favorite old pair of jeans.

When our repair staff get a hold of a project Martin with great potential, they make sure the job’s done right. We took in this 1943 000 as a 000-21 with a number of issues, and over time stabilized everything and brought it back to life, then took it one step further and upgraded the appointments from a 21 to more of a 40 or 42 style hybrid. Ken and Joe did an incredible job bringing this beauty back into premium playing shape, and now it’s raring to go!

Such a delight to see this one in the shop. This is one of Martin’s most coveted signature series, the 1999 D-45SS Stephen Stills, and we’ve landed number 86 of 91 of that most exclusive run. Each of these was built with figured Brazilian Rosewood and Alpine Spruce on top, plus perfectly executed 45-style appointments and a MOP Southern Cross inlaid into the guard in homage to CSN. This particular beauty has the snowflakes & diamonds fretboard spread as well. Tonally, this is a distinctive, expressive, exquisitely musical Dreadnought. It’s sensitive enough for fingerpicking, and also has enough headroom for aggressive strumming without breaking up.
