2016 Muth S16J Brazilian/European
Hot off the bench, this 2016 S16J from Randy Muth is a firecracker beneath your fingertips, offering an expressive voice that never loses its cool and sustain that’ll hang around so long you ought to charge it for rent. Of course, this guitar has a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides with dramatic rippling figure, and a European Spruce top (itself delicately bearclaw-figured), so be prepared for that inevitable moment when you find yourself staring, rather than playing, this beauty.
The voice is one smooth operator, with a surgically-precise balance across the strings that really allows your fingerstyle arrangements room to breathe–and this balance is maintained no matter what altered tuning you throw its way. Muth added a soundport to the upper bout, and an arm rest bevel to the lower, for player comfort, and supplied the left hand with a Venetian Cutaway to easily access all of the Ebony-bound fretboard.
One peek through the soundport, and you’ll spy Randy’s “XTF” bracing scheme, a hybrid of Classical and Steel String bracing designs that, in his words, enhances the “expression of the tripole vibration mode typically found in nylong string guitars…[which] helps provide power to the trebles and higher harmonics.” Wrapped up in an Ameritage hardshell case, this S16J is poised to take over your collection–care to give it a go?

East Indian Rosewood back and sides + Carpathian Spruce top + innovative building techniques = Randy Muth’s S15, a killer 000 with tone to spare! Randy’s approach to lutherie is based in his education as a scientist, and the results of his experiments in, and they’re working wonderfully. From his brace construction and allocation to the materials used in his bridge plates, these guitars are novel concepts which consistently churn out great tone.
With a Carpathian Spruce top, this S15 has heaps of growl and fierce projection with focused trebles and a muscular lower register. This is the sort of guitar for which the more aggresssively your attack, the greater the sustain and richness, and it performs wonderfuly for both flatpicking solos and fingerstyle arrangements. Sealed up in an Ameritage hardshell case, this S15 is as secure as Fort Knox, but imminently more accessible.

Randy Muth is another new builder to us that we met this year at the Woodstock guitar show. It is immediately apparent when you meet Randy that he is truly passionate about guitar building and eager to help advance the craft while honoring the past. This S16J is built from a jaw dropping set of Tasmanian Blackwood and Lutz Spruce. Randy has voiced this guitar expertly. It is perfectly balanced and the bass is one of the most fulfilling we have heard recently, while the trebles and mids blend and sing together like a choir. A true knockout of a guitar!

I was born and raised in Paterson, NJ and attended PS 14, PS 5 and John F. Kennedy High School. From there I received my B.S. degree in Chemistry at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute. I then attended the University of Vermont and received a Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry. After working a number of years at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, I made the decision to leave the corporate world to raise my family and pursue other interests. Ultimately this led me to my current career building guitars. I’ve now been building guitars professionally for the past ten years in my shop in Hamilton, NY. Building guitars allows me to combine my passion for creating and building with my love of guitar music.
My approach to guitar building is greatly influenced by my nature and experience as a scientist. I have an experimental approach based on the art of discovery and exploration. Like a good scientist I have studied the prior art of the masters, such as Torres, Hauser, Martin and many others both past and present. From this basis I’ve continued my own experiments in design while always being open to serendipitous discovery. As a result my guitars reflect my own personality and path of discovery making them uniquely mine. I have a holistic approach to building, recognizing the guitar is a complicated interdependent system, and that each guitar is built from unique natural materials.
To this end, my focus is to build unique tools for musicians that are sonically expressive and h
