2006 Olson Dread Indian/Sitka All Black!
Here’s an exceptionally rare, all black Olson Dreadnought model. James confirmed that he’s only built one or two of these gorgeous black guitars. This one is adorned with custom Abalone inlays including the full name ‘Olson’ on the headstock and a full top border, rosette and backstrip of Abalone as well. This beautifully maintained guitar has a stellar voice, clear and full of that Olson sparkle, but with a big Dread timbre that makes it a rare instrument capable of anything from fingerstyle to flatpicking and strumming. This is a singular and special guitar with a look that’s all it’s own. Includes a Calton Flight Case.

Jim Olson enjoys a reputation unlike any other one-man custom shop: he has built many, many guitars, each one to exacting standards which yield an instrument that’s anything but standard. However, of that multitude of guitars, only a handful have ever been Jumbos, and an even smaller handful have been 12-strings–and the Indian–Rosewood-and-Sitka–Spruce Olson we’re offering here is both. To make this 2000 Olson even more unique, Jim is no longer taking orders for either 12-strings or Jumbos! And that’s not even taking into account the Celtic knot and cross inlay work with which famed inlay artist Larry Robinson (of Martin’s D-100 fame) has adorned the fretboard and headstock.
As if all of that wasn’t enough to put this guitar at the top of your list, the playability and tone of this 12-string Jumbo isn’t like any 12-string you’ve played before. The balance is surgical, the string-to-string articulation pronounced, the voice simultaneously complex and controlled. Set up to play like butter on a hot iron skillet, this Olson 12-string has an immense projection that manages to avoid the wall of sound pitfall of a lesser 12-string guitar, instead remaining clear and well-defined even when driven hard with a flatpick. Rigged with an undersaddle pickup and Calton flight case, this rare Jumbo gem of a Jim Olson is ready to soar.

James A. Olson (“Jim”) has been handcrafting acoustic flattop guitars since 1977. His instruments began getting national attention in the mid 1980s, after Phil Keaggy commissioned the first cedar-topped Olson SJ guitar and began playing Olson guitars almost exclusively on his acoustic albums and in concert. In 1989, James Taylor purchased three of Jim’s guitars; through Taylor’s visibility, Olson guitars became known and prized by a wide variety of players around the world. Today an impressive number of well-known players in styles spanning fingerstyle to bluegrass to country to pop are proud Olson owners, including Leo Kottke, David Wilcox, James Taylor, Graham Nash, Sting, and many others. But most of the 40+ or so guitars Jim is able to build each year go to players of less renown (like those of us who contributed to this site, and perhaps like you), although of perhaps equally discriminating taste!
