The workshop of Claudio and Claudia Pagelli produce some of the most out of the ordinary guitars that we see here at Dream Guitars. Swiss Moonspruce on top and some RIDICULOUS Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. Playing this instrument is like being inside of a guitar bubble of sound. It is truly an experience to be had in person. Did we mention it’s blue?! It is blue!

Here we’ve got one of their 40th Anniversary models outfitted with Amarant back and sides, Swiss Moonspruce top, and a gorgeous aesthetic with red-purple wine finish, faux MOP appointments, and custom squared bridge pins. We love the satin finish on a Padauk neck here; oh so comfortable and silky in hand. On the other side of the neck, you’ll find a 1 11/16″ nut and 25.5″ scale length for snappy note definition.

Powerhouse lutherie duo Claudio and Claudia Pagelli have been pushing the bleeding edge of guitarbuilding for decades now, yielding a fiercely independent and inventive body of work that completely stands apart from the crowd. We are so excited to be officially partnering up with them to bring you their latest and greatest!
Here we’ve got one of their 40th Anniversary models outfitted with Ovangkol back and sides, Moonspruce top, and some really incredible soundhole and soundport design work. Note the twin offset soundholes at the upper bout of the top? Flip around back for a soundport that’s integrated below the neck, and head over to the bass side lower bout for a rectangular soundport to round it all out. Additionally, the top is braced with continuous brace stock that spreads out at the ends in a vinelike fan that we’ve never seen before. The result is a very energetic and chirpy voice, with treble strings that absolutely kill, very clean and crisp. Wenge neck with a satin finish? Makes for a gossamer lefthand experience. Throw in a unique pinless bridge design and negative space headstock, and you’ve got a whole new kind of beast in your hands.

This Gringobeat is a semihollow archtop with reimagined curves to maximize ergonomics without compromising an ounce of tone. Note the asymetrical bouts, which help position the guitar perfectly for your right hand; the silky setup and satin-finished Okoume neck; the aluminum arm rest and nickel hardware. The body is also Okoume, aged at least 25 years before use, and the top is a set of carved Swiss Alpine Moonspruce that is finished in the Pagellis’ 3D technique, which yields unique and different results each time. On this Gringobeat, the finish rises and falls across the surface, with lower layers letting the Spruce grain telegraph through. Running your hands over it is a delight. On the electronics front, we’re outfitted with triple Lollar Gold Foils plus a six-way switch for a wide, wide palette of tones (the first position towards the bridge actives the two outer pickups). Additionally, a KMS bridge plus Bigsby tailpiece, and Hipshot knobs, complete the package.

2015 is a very good year for the guitar world. Why? Because this is the year that the Massari was made by Pagelli, a monster of a jazz guitar dyed in blue that sings like gold. Only the choicest of woods were used in this build, from the Canadian Quilted Maple back and sides to the super rare Swiss Alpine “Moon” Spruce, so called because it’s only harvested according to a specific calender which follows lunar cycles to ensure the Spruce is lighter, and stronger, than its other brethren. So, acoustically, the Massari is filled to the brim with a sweet, fat voice–but when amplified, the custom-wound Haussel Humbucker transforms the guitar into a surgeon’s knife: immaculately clean, unerringly precise, aggressively responsive. The secret behind Haussel’s technique involves his use of poles in the middle, not unlike a single coil, so the pickup catches string vibrations at one defined point, creating an articulate single coil tone with none of the hum. Take it anywhere, throw any genre at it, and the Massari will keep up. You’ll want to practice more, just to play it. This guitar comes with the original Ameritage hardshell case.

Claudia and I are senior guitar builders. We consider this to be a great thing, as it means that we’ve been doing this for a long time, and it gives the impression of actual experience ;-). But considering that I opened my first shop in 1979, it really is true! The 1970s. . . The golden years of rock ‘n’ roll, with the establishment on one side, and hippies on the other. Long hair was our rebellion against monotony, and guitars, the coolest instruments ever, were our weapons—I mean, can you imagine a revolution with a flute? 😉 For me, the long hair was easy; but I needed a guitar! Accordingly, I built my first guitar when I was 13. OK, so “guitar” is a grandiose term for the plywood thing I’d created, but it was a start. And I continued to move forward, although my progress was disrupted by periods of being a professional musician as well as a sound engineer in various studios. But in hindsight, those phases were very helpful activities for a developing luthier! I started out primarily building electric guitars, and I also repaired and restored countless instruments, including basses and flattops, that I brought home from trips to the US. Eventually, I came under the spell of the archop—the most royal of them all. To me, designing these instruments’ curves and arches, while maintaining the required strength and still maximizing their tonal potential, is a balancing act of epic beauty. However, that’s not to say that we don’t enjoy building the occasional electric, flattop, or bass! But as any business strategist knows, diversity can come at a price. In the case of guitar makers, most gain a reputation for their archtops, or their electrics, or their flattops, or their basses, but not for doing everything. But somehow, we have managed to not only be accepted, but to receive praise of the highest order, and we thank you for putting your trust into our work. Claudia has been part of Pagelli Guitars for many years. Without her natural gift to create beauty, my guitars would still look like they came from the stone-age. But today, they’ve influenced a generation of luthiers, and we’re proud to see our ideas in instruments built by others. This is our 35th year, and as long as people continue to make music, we look forward to the next 35! To all our customers, and all those who are interested in our instruments, and really, all those who support us, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!
